They mount to the swingarm pivot point and are designed to keep the chain at the same tension throughout the rear wheel travel. This stops the suspension binding up when the chain tension tightens and loosens. They are fairly noisy as the chain has to travel over a couple of metal sprockets.
This reminds me of a local ATV "expert" who wanted to put one on his un-suspended 70 trike. If people only knew....

there like a chain tensioner on a mountain bike, They never took off idea was good in theory but never worked successfully

I remember trying to work out what the hell those things were whenever i read through Dads old dirtwheels mags from late 80's and through the 90's. Laughing Now i know i guess. Smile
