I have a 1987KXT250b2. 250cc Two stroke almost identical to the 1986 KX250 motor.

Since I've owned it, it has burn't out 3 High tension coils. Can anyone suggest what may be causing this fault? Its driving me batty.

P.S. Its the same coil as what is found in the 1986KDX200

I had the stator windings and rotor checked by Small coil rewinds just after the second coil went. They said that the stator windings were fine and he refurbished the rotor for me.

The coil is located in the factory position but it was an aftermarket coil. I'm getting sick of coughing up $80 bucks every second ride.

Anyone out there ever owned a KDX200 with coil dramas?

OK, thanks for the replys gents. I may have jumped the gun this time. The coil failed an ohm meter test but when it was put on the test bench it come up OK. It wasn't great, (9mm max arc, most good coils nowadays should pump out at least 12mm) but it worked.

I've left the whole ignition system with a bike wrecker and he is gong to run it up this week to see if he can find any other dramas. i hope it comes up good other wise this is going to be an expensive little exercise.

Another thing, I noticed when I pulled out the rotor and stator was that it was very yucky under the cover. slimy Corrosive goop all over the stator and rust everywhere on the rotor.

Last place I was riding was down around that lake at the back of stockton. (which was awsome fun BTW) I think It may have just got a bit too much moisture in there which could have killed the spark. Has anyone experienced that problem? Does anyone put a rust inhibitor or WD40 in their ignition systems? what works the best?
