It takes a little bit to get used to but it is not difficult in any way just keep riding and before you know it you will be shifting without even thinkingabout it, be careful if your doing donuts, (i know you will coz you wont be able to not when you first get a quad but that will wear off soon) quads have a habit of getting traction at the worst moment throwing you off then looking for you and then running you over.
a word of advice
fast is not necessarily fast
smooth is fast
ie,,, dont just jump on and go flat out, make sure you spend time getting the technique right then inevitabley you will go faster and be safer.

Dont forget body language in corners... It hurts when your quad is ontop of you. Hrm
What state/city do you live in. Most states have clubs going and most members will be more than willing to give you some pointers. Smile

There are quite a few organised rides in SE Queensland if you are in the know. Joining the Queensland Quad Riders Asscociation will help. You just need to get in the loop, QQRA is a good place to start.

i figure that seeing as i have to wait to get my quad, its a perfect time to have a think and do my homework on the subject, so that im prepared when i do get it but not unprepared knowledge wise.

so i have a couple of questions.

1. what are some basic maintenance tips i can perform before and after riding my quad. i used to have nitro rc cars (lol) and u had to drain the fuel from the tank and combustion chamber after use to prevent damage. does anyone do this with quads or is it not necesary?

2. choosing bikes, yamaha vs kawasaki vs honda ? parts availablity for these bikes? popularity etc.

You can still join up and come to the meetings if you want. Will give you a chance to meet people and learn about different things.

Simple maintenence like cleaning the air filter, checking/ changing oil and keeping fresh grease in all the moving joints helps the quad last. Also the odd check over to make sure nothing is missing or loose.

Depending on what kind of riding you want to do. Yamaha Banshee's are usually easy to find second hand and for a decent price. But i you want to spend the extra money and get a newer 4 stroke you have a choice of Yamaha YFZ450, Honda TRX450R and Suzuki LTR450 aswell as the Kawasuki KFX450, but im not to shure on when the Kwaka will get to our shores.

Parts availability for all models is pretty good. If you are looking for OEM replacement parts you can just ask around and some guys will sell you there parts that they replaced with after market gear or you can go to your local dealer (10% off at Pro Yamaha if you are a member of the QQRA). If you are looking for after market parts you can ask around on here or with club members for second hand stuff or you can try a couple of guys like Hardiman, JMC, RAT Motorsport, PeteW at southern Quads and Austraco.

Sorry for the long post. Hope that helps. Smile
