Hello everyone, im a newb to this forum (and this sport) and was wondering if anyone could give me a little advice.
i have never owned a dirtbike/atv and am currently looking into purchasing one. However, im not sure if spending 14,000 will be worth it. i have a car loan and would have to finance the atv (yamaha raptor 450 se) so i would be paying some serious cash in order to keep the two vehicles. i guess my question is, is it worth the money and hardship i would have to endure to own my own bike? if anyone can really answer that.
let me know what you think, regards
Dan. |

Dan
Welcome to the site...
My 2cents worth.......If you have never owed an ATV. I would be looking at getting somthing that is second hand, stick to well known brands there are plenty out there to get you started in the sport and at a fraction of the cost of new, 6-7k will get you somthing decent, Remember you will crash it, bend it, or hit somthing and brake plastics it hurts the pocket if you have already shelled out serious coin like 14k on a new bike plus the fact that it is still stock and as your ridding exsperience builds you will want to start adding aftermarket parts. that will run into more seriose coin, these days a couple k will get you the basics.
Most second hand bikes have usauly already had most of the basic mods already done (exhaust, nerfs, kill switch, widening kits etc.) so you will get a few years out of it before you would whant to start major mods.
Sorry about the essay but I hope it helps.....Good luck on your decission...
I did it this way (wife 2 rug rats a morgage and a dog) so the coin is tight... _________________ 04 Polaris Predator 500 with mods

hey there cuzo, thanks for your time to reply, i really apreciate it.
that has sparked a few new questions for me as i think i might take your advice and go second hand. where can i get a second hand bike from in my area, i live in brisbane. and also can i still finance a second hand quad. actually one more question, what sort of quad should i look at for my first, i wanted something around the 450cc range. cheers,
Dan. |

| to be honest and i know i will get some people saying dont listen to him but i think if you have never had a bike or quad before i would start out on something smaller than a 450 as a raptor 450 is a bloody powerfull bike for a first timer i went a 350 raptor and now i would like a bit more power but i have had it for over a year but i must say for the riding i do it is more than enough as for finance you can get a personal loan for a second hand bike |

my opinion for what it's worth
banshee
upside-----cheap to buy cheap to fix heaps of aftermarket stuff available at reasonable prices and power to burn. most cases resale value is good ie you can buy a 2001 ish banshee, ride it for a while till you work out whether you want to stay in the sport and when it's time to either trade up or get out you wont lose too much on selling it
downside ---- fuel consumption and extra cost for high quality 2 stroke oil,
stock suspension not very good for heavier rider, (maybe my fuel consumption is coz i'm a heavy rider lol) engine rebuild cost is a fraction of 4 stroke rebuild but usually needed more often,
just my observation so far |

anyone know the best way to approach getting a personal loan, should i save a deposit or something to improve my chances, my car costs me 120 a week and i only earn 400 a week, but i dont have any other comitments like food or rent or anything. so do u recon i would have a good chance? i have never defaulted on a payment either. |

i Gotta agree, get a banshee.they are cheap(ish) but still good quality for a first timer they have ample suspension btu most of all they are pretty quick even stock and if you learn on a banshee then you will pretty much get all the skills you need quickly and have a ball doing it. you can get finance on a second hand bike from a Yamaha dealer(Y Loan) 2 points about this though firstly it will end up costing you twice as much but secondly they will give a Y loan to almost anyone as long as you have a job.
my opinion, save up and buy a 2nd hand banshee with pipes for around 4-5 grand might be an older one but that will be the best value for money |

ok i will look into second hand at the yamaha dealer i went to. i tried to get the finance for the 14,000 but they said i needed between 10-30% deposit of the bike before they would consider me. so hopefully on a cheaper bike my chances improve |

remember with finance you need to also have insurance on the quad then for entire duration of loan
just a little trap that has not been explained
personal loans need to be above $5000 from a bank or they will give you a credit card instead and you dont need a deposit for a personal loan _________________ black covered in 5.7 powered oversize quad

I'm new to the quads aswell as yourself and still looking.
Just remember your only 18 and what the other guys are saying is good wisdom in only spending a small amount of cash before you know you like it or not.
Just think about if you crash and cause yourself some injury, and hopefully you don't, you may not be able to work for a couple of weeks but the repayments still have to be made, something to look out for. Sorry to be a little pesimistic but just trying to cover all bases before you comitt. Also you'll need a trailer, riding gear, maintenance cost etc. so the cost doesn't stop after purchasing the bike.
I'm just talking about my experience (crashing) and just trying to fill in some gaps which you might not have thought about.
Cheers

good point best way to cover that is take out loan insurance so then if unable to work or you lose your job through redundancy it pays payments for so long _________________ black covered in 5.7 powered oversize quad

mate, you will struggle to get finance for a loan over 5-6g's in my opinion.
banshee for you i think, good cheap, reliable (most of the time) and quick.
once you get the hang of it, throw a couple of grand at it and it'll keep a grin on your face. |

Thats cool least you now were you stand now, one thing I dont think any one has mentioned is what kind of ridding are you most likley to do this will definately play a big part in what kind of quad would be best for you dont rush into anything and do you home work.
A friend use to have a Yamaha Worrier very easy to learn on and has plenty of fun power... Just another thought..
Sad thing is he just traded it for $2000.00 _________________ 04 Polaris Predator 500 with mods

ok guys i officially hate banks. now they tell me they wont give me the money. bloody hell! so thats bad news
how ever i have better news than that... i went to where i work today and told my boss that im having trouble affording things while studying full time and asked if i could go onto the exempt rate. usually u have to work there for 3 yrs but he thinks im a good worker so he put me on it, so as of sunday i earn pretty much double what i normally do. HOW AWESOME |
