Santa had too much to drink last Friday night and told me I was getting a helmet cam for Xmas, but she doesn't know which one is any good!

Any input would be appreciated.

There was a fella at the Gascoyne Dash last week who sells them or something, so I was told, but I never got to speak to him. Bugger!

I have the V-Hold Contour HD, I'm not that impressed with It. Tell her to get you a Go-Pro HD. They're new and cost around $300.00 USD.

Do a Goggle search.

I just bought a go pro. We stuck the thing on Gene Winfields car at the El Mirage speed trial in Mojave. Great little unit, water proof, dust proof and very wide angle so the footage is fairly steady.

Cost me $200 US.

Ive got a TACHYON XC Helmet cam, great footage, can take a 32gb card and has 8 hrs recording on Highest Quality and 64hrs on lowest, waterproof to 10m and if you put 2 together on your helmet you can make 3D video. I got mine in Aus from Hayden at XS industries 0414939376 or www.xsind.com.au There $299.00, has plenty in stock.

I've got a goPro helmet camera, works great but working out a mount that didn't need to stick onto the bars was a little bit of a hassle but works well, now it mounts onto the stem which some scrutineers will let pass and some won't.

Got a Vholdr HD Contour, unlike previous post, we think it is excellent,
footage is crystal clear
eg mounted on side of helmet, you can even count how many tear offs are on the goggles, much better than the first vholdr we had(some of its out on the track somehwhere as it wasnt mounted totally correct haha)

same as anything you want to buy, check out the footage from what is available to you to see for yourself and then make an informed decision.

Would probably make a good read in ATV Action hey, for someone to test drive them all and do an unbiased comparison?
just a thought!

I use Hel Cam, clarity is awsome but you do have to carry a recording device, though they are are getting smaller than the one I have....I can also shoot stills while riding from the remote that atatches to the bars.

The vid, well......... I had flat batteries so the footage was no where.
I do not have my Outlaw here. I did ask the officials if they would run a quad and they have no class for it. Go figure? Thats OK though, they have lots of desert races here for quads.

I have the VHOLDR Contour HD (720p) and the GoPro HD (1080p).

I prefer the VHOLDER as a helmet camera as its more attractive and flush to the helmet, and I find operation of the unit is a lot easier once mounted. I personally think the quality is better then the 1080p but that's probably just a biased opinion.

I purchased the GoPro for diving and water sports, a area that the VHOLDR unfortunately forgot about - they are currently making a water proof casing (That was meant to be released December 09), however they have been recalled due to manufacturer faults. I will be heading out for the first time on Sunday with both cams on the Raptor - so I will try chuck some footage up of the two so you can see the difference.

Oh did I mention they look sexy as in there case? laughing

*EDIT*

Also the GoPro parts and mounts are very cheap - replacement camera body, lenses or double sided mounts cost S.F.A, where as the VHOLDR is rather expensive for extras like double sided mounts and car chargers.

Also it may sway your opinion depending if you edit your videos - the VHOLDR records in .MOV format which is a absolute bastard if you are a windows user and the GoPro records in .MPG4.

I also find controls on the GoPro a absolute pain in the ass. The display is on the front of the camera as well as the light to indicate if its recording or not, so most times, my video starts with a mugshot.

Yeah thanks for that. We went with the Contour HD, which is low profile and easy to use, but my PC can't handle the editing at all! More money Sad

I didn't like the idea of the go pro cos it sticks out too much. We do some pretty tight tracks and I'm sure I'd rip the bllody thing off my helmet.

The thing I don't like about the Contour is I can't adjust the contrast, so if I'm in front in the dunes it makes very poor and boring video. But if I'm following someone, at least you get a small sense of scale and at least some depth of field, otherwise it's all glare and whitewash.

I have a VHoldR Contour HD 1080p and I love it. You should be able to edit the contrast through the software..... laughing

Hey Muzz,

Check out this link, its got a firmwear upgrade from our version to the 1080p software, which allows editing of contrast etc in the VHOLDR editing software.

Paul

*EDIT*

Probably best to include the link...

I've got the ContourHD 1080 and I love it. It's so easy to start and stop, which is important for me coz I always seem to forget to start it and reach up and do it once we're going - the beeps are loud enough to hear through my helmet with the engine going so I always know when I am recording.

The only danger with a helmet cam is recording your conversation when you forget it's still on, then playing it back on the PC when everyone's around....

OOPS did I really say that! eek

I have got a go pro helmet cam which so far is proving awesome! However the wife will be the one doing the computer stuff and needs to know how do you get the stuff from the camera to a DVD and does anyone have any suggestions for good software. We are in the market for a netbook which we want purely for taking on holidays and for photo and video. Does anyone have an opinion on what sort of netbook we should have a look at and which software programme is best for editing video footage. The Go Pro is the wide angle hero not the HD. As I said earlier if anyone is looking for a camera this one is really good (tried it on Finke reconnaissance the other day).

If your new at it just use windows movie maker and gets use to cutting and editing....

I now use Nero but this is all amature stuff but great fun, I found the more complex or more option in the program the longer or more critical it takes to edit it....

This was done with windows

I have a Go pro HD and take footage at 720p 60fps. Windows movie maker will only edit and save at 30fps. Quicktime does it at 60fps but is "profanity removed" software to use. Pinnacle HD Ultimate is the one I found for HD footage. If anyone knows anything better let me know. Also have a dell inspiron mini netbook. Awesome at playing footage from the go pro at 720p but I personally wouldn't edit with it.
