i should have elaborated a little
i am looking at using a high octane fuel to eliminate detonation and pinging with out adjusting the timing on a high compression engine any extra performance is a bonus laughing

cheaper to remove your highcomp piston and run something sensible before it grenades itself.

if your engine needs more then 98 then run on methanol.

I read an article about a jap engineer who worked for one of the big four bike companies and basically said all the fuel (petrol) we use in australia is crap! I think they have higher octane rating in japan than here. I saw 20L of ron 100 in a bike shop for $60 a couple of years ago but not sure what you'd pay now. You'd think it would be cheaper to buy av gas? Best bet would be to talk to somone with a plane and see if you could buy some off them, or next time you go to the drags when the top fuel guys arn't watching pinch a bit of nitro methane, she will go then but most probally bang Smile

I have not in quads.

When i was in the drag racing scene we used to run c16 but this is not for you.
Back in my day (10 years ago) I used to run 50/50 mix of optimax and avgas for my daily driver with excellent results. Im guessing these days you will pay a min of $6 per litre for a basic race fuel.

I used to buy from vp racing....google is your friend

Vp109 is the best race fuel www.vpracing.com.au
is about $6-$8 per litre tho.
The other option is E85, $1.08 per litre from certain united petrol stations however you need a much richer fuel mixture (about 1.3 times petrol) or you can get it from one of the places on www.racefuels.com.au

avgas is a bad idea as it is leaded and not suited to "modern" engnes

avgas whould be good for it .it's a leaded fuel so it burns cleaner and has an upper valve lube built in only thing is it illegal to run up to a $110 000 fine if you get caught and there pretty strict on selling it(edit sorry its not good for efi bikes though)
methanol requires a lot of work after your done running it you have to run petrol through your caby to clean it out or it destroys rubber seals
i did find a fuel called JFP 100 for about $4.40 per ltr
or ET racing 102 unleaded for $110 for 20 ltrs
might just have to go bp 98 with an octane booster abour $1.80 pre ltr
also the 98 octane fuel you buy from the servo only has to be 95 octane for them to sell it to you as 98

alot of pro-stock engine builders will disagree with you there, i know one such racer (and record holder) who says he regularly converts engines from methanol to oxygenated race fuel and sees up to 20% gains...

isnt avgas only around 100 octane these days?

trx435 i would look into the E85 thing, although you might still have to flush the engine after every ride, not that big of a deal really.

were talking about a quad not a pro stock engine.
if reliability and cost of fuel isnt an issue then yea head straight to c16 or sunocco, but at $6L + for an extra 2-5 hp over a sensible compression ratio i dont see the point.
if you want more power change the engine.

i'm building one now
carbied 355 with vn heads and solid cam
trx 400 with 500 hp sounds a little dangerous and heavy laughing
i like the 440 it has stump pulling power quicker than most 450's
i'm just going to run bp 98 with a booster should be fine
but whist i'm on a roll has any one used and AMR or NITRO aftermarket coil pack

Hey trx435 why don't you try blending a bit of methanol with your fuel you can blend the fuels together you only need to advance the timing a bit to stop it from pre-detonating on the upward stroke and run it a bit richer. This works on two and four strokes i run it in a 96 cr250 and an old 125 4 stroke the 125 4 banger would do 14,000 rpm and smoke 250's. The only thing with blending fuels is they go stale quick you only blend what you need on the day.

i spoke to the vp fuel rep in australia he said to run ms100 which is on the usa website as the streetblaze blend that was for a trx700xx if i want to run a 12.1 piston (standard 10.1) it was $1350.00 for 200 litres not including shipping or $160.00 for 20 litres not including shipping

so $250 per 20l delivered, and by the time it gets here and u open it how long till it goes stale?

theres easier ways to smoke your mates, and remember, you cant run any race fuel in any event covered by MA

yeah not worth it i am going to run pump gas 98% octane with maxima hi test and stay with a 11.1 piston he said it could sit in bike for a couple of weeks and that you could have a 200 litre drum sit off the ground in a cool corner in your shed last a couple of years

I was speaking to a chemist who worked for Engen Petroleum( Mobil in Australia) in South Africa, he said I should try adding Toluene in 5% increments but not to go past 15%. I got to 10% and got the desired effect on my DS650. I would not have a clue where to get Toluene in Australia.

I have used this type of blend in the past with an engine in a very high state of tune with great results. 90% 98 octane and 10% menthanol. Best to use 100% pure methanol, it is used in laboratories and can be purchased from some gas supply shops in 20L drums.
