Seriously I ride my stuff in, in exactly none hours. While it may sound stupid ride it like you stole it is the best method.
It's one of those subjects that could be argued for ever. |

Just ride it like you normally do. The shop where you bought it at has already flogged it out the back.
I just change the oil after my first ride. _________________ Don't close your eyes during the crash, you'll miss the best part |

As said above i run my engines in just the same way i would ride a 2 year old engine but most of mine are two strokes.Four strokes on the other hand When its a brand new (factory specs)engine not just a rebuilt engine you have to remember you have valves, valve seats cam bushes/bearings etc alot more to bed in then a two stroke.IN my opinion with a new fourstroke ride it nomally but make sure you vary the throttle lots regular oil changes.Oh and deffinately keep on top of valve clearences etc.
Also very true a subject that could be argued for ever.To each there own. _________________ 1984 ATC 300R, 1986 TRX 500R,1984 ATC 200X, ATC 70 WITH CUSTOM LAYDOWN 250R ENGINE, 125CC CUSTOM THUMPSTER TRIKE |

dont lug it and dont hit the limiter, keep it under a variable load between the 2. _________________ 01 Banshee

| Yeah right, ride it like you stole it,that means thrash it then set fire to it,haha.some others have it right, take it easy, vary the revs and change the oil regularly.Keep an eye on the oil you dump for odd amounts of fileings and foreign mater. |

x 2 for that, just to be nice to the new toy
But like Linc said, it's hardly necessary at all these days...
because all engine parts are made to very exacting tolerances. _________________ Can-Am X Team

| yes newer engines are made to more exact tolerances but u still needa treat them nicely when they a brand new, rings still need to bed in and valves need to aswell, its just the same as when you get a new car or rebuilt car engine u needa to run it in. u will have a lot better engine if you treat it well when its new. |

I understand where you guys are coming from but I don't agree. After all you have just spent good money on a quad or engine rebuild and want to take it easy. Thats fine but.......
In Japan they roll a brand new bike off the line and on to a rolling road (dyno) and give them hell through all gears. After that they put them in their shipping box.
In drag racing they rebuild the engines after every race. They dont "take it easy for a bit" they dont "treat them nicely" they take them out and give them hell.
In the Dakar when some teams rebuild engines daily they don't run them in around the car park. They screw them together then race them for 700km through the desert.
As previously stated its one of those issues. |

we campained a super stock methanol car for 4 years we were state champs for 3 of them our engines were built by 1 of the best engine builders in australia, at no time did we run a engine flat out cold neither did any one we knew (and we knew every one)it was run in on the dyno to bed the rings and cam in. only a fool would run an engine flat chat cold and we ran better clearences than a atv engine. as for the fuelers thats a different story
if anyone doesnt want to run in there engine properly thats there problem me i run mine in for the 10 hours it saids in the book when in doubt read the book i think yamaha, kawasaki, suzuki and honda know more than you guys |

Make sure it is FULLY WARMED UP FIRST! Regardless if you are running it in or have run it for years.
Full throttle without revving too high.
Do this a few times then dump that oil for fresh stuff and you are good to go.
The guy above is dead right, only a fool would thrash a cold engine. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

The question was never about a 'cold' engine. It was about a new engine. _________________ Don't close your eyes during the crash, you'll miss the best part |

strongly agree on the cold engine thing, its defonetly one of the best things you can do to an engine to help get the extra life out of it, and i agree with, mostt defonetly DO NOT lug it at all but dont just go rape it straight away, theres millions of different run in techniques for a 4 stroke. _________________ 2009 WestAussie #1

Before thrashing your new quad...
Make sure you spend some time in front of a nice open fire with a warm Milo first.
Once you are all warm and cosey, go out to the shed and get on your brand spanker quad and ride it to the rev limiter.
Don't forget to take it out of the crate first. _________________ Can-Am X Team
