Let me start off by saying a huge Merry Christmas to each one of you!

It's been a while since I've been back, thanks to uni exams which nearly killed me. But now I have until March to get reacquainted with my beloved banshee.

My money situation isn't looking any better than it was this time last year, however thanks to some prayers, looks like it's about to change.

I need to get some more advice from you please. I know that I've posted this kind of thing before, but I just want to see if there's been any change of heart since then.

I've got a banshee, stock as a rock, and after 7 years of riding it, it's never given me any hastle except for some small minor stuff. Until last week. My cousin jumped on it, who hardly knows how to ride, and who also weighs about 120kg. While I wasn't looking, his mrs, who isn't a size 6, jumped on it ..... with him still on it.

I ran as fast as I could... that awful sound of the motor under labour.... it makes my blood run cold. I finally got to a place where I could wave them down to stop. I could taste the heat from the engine. I could hear it. This bike had just been tortured.

minutes later, after some.... corrective speech.... I jumped on it to roll it back into the shed. Something wasn't right. Why does the bike feel so.... sloppy?

Off I get and theres the mortal wound. The rear shock seal had been ruptured and the reservoir was now empty. The motor wasn't happy either. I let it cool down for the day.

My bike now sits on a stand. I have now officially declared that anyone who does not ride better than me, does not touch my bike. No matter who they are. I kicked it in the guts the next day, and I found that, thankfully, Yamaha makes quality stuff. It seemed to be normal and after a quick wrap around the track it seemed ok albeit the tiredness I have been experiencing the last year.

I just picked up my rebuilt rear shock and seems in good order. The guy who rebuilt it for me told me that the two phillips head screws at the top near the valve are seized, but other than that its still good.

I love my bike, and I love riding, even more so I love showing up these punks like my younger brother on his RMZ 250. (even barely) .... however the events of late have reconfirmed with me that its time for my bike to take a juice injection or let it make way for a 700 raptor.

I've been shopping around and noticing other banshees with some work, and some 700 raptors with some work too and I can't decide.

Just for the moment, I'll leave cost aside, but has anyone with minimal experience repaired and maintained a 700 raptor? I like to repair/maintain my own stuff where I can, but I have seen the day long hell of incorrect valve adjustment on a bike and it is the only thing turning me off the raptor. Has anyone got any thoughts on this?

Going back to the Banshee, is there anyone who's had experience with big bore kits? Would you recommend/not recommend? What would you do to turn it into a weapon? Exhaust and reed kit isn't enough for me.

I'm expecting to spend about 5k-6k on the banshee if i stay with it, and if I sell it, i've been convinced that DMC aliens, EFI controller (never heard of it or how it works) and the air filter really wake these things up. Perhaps some suspension too?

I may be wrong on some things, so if I am, please correct me!!

I'm all for buying new toys, but after reading your story I would think twice about spending money.

Your still in uni and I would probably save my money for either a house, car, business opportunity, etc... before I spent it on a quad. Don't get me wrong quads are nice but save your money and ride your Banshee to death. When you graduate, get a good paying job, house, car, 2.5 kids then buy all the toys you can afford.

My 2c worth.

Life's short and can end in a heart beat. There are a lot of ways you can die. Live life like there is no tomorrow (within reason) untill you have kids. Then you live for them.

IMO, better advice would be to finish Uni and spend a few years traveling. It saddens me to see young people buying houses and taking on big response abilitys straight out of school ect.
Life experience is the most valuable thing you'll ever own.

Your advice is how 40+ year old Harley Davivson riding bikies going through a mid life crisis come about.

And remember "He who dies with the most toys wins".

That's the problem with our society now, were spending like there's no tomorrow.

Don't want to start a debate. That's just my thoughts.
By the way, when I was in uni I had a beat up Yamaha Moto4 which I have lots of fond memory's of.

Anyway, who listens to me? My kids don't even listen to me

this topic has gone it bit off the subject lol, i have a 02 banshee that nearly has everything add on done to it besides a big bore kit. its still bloody fast and handles great so im not going to upgrade until it is completely shagged out and i have the funds to buy a 450 or 700 and fit it out with everything

i think you should spend a bit on your banshee there's lots of aftermarket parts out there 4 them and you can get some good prices on them. get some pipes(if u havent already got them) and a nice wider suspension set-up and a cool head or something. and save the rest of your money and chip away at your banshee every couple months get somethign else and then u will still have some money to save for a house and stuff but still be able to have a fun fast quad

i love raptors my self , but saying that , why dont you sell your banshee and buy a banshee or raptor that someone has already modified, because 4 to 5 grand dosent buy much these day as far as performance stuff goes. even browse the buy and sell in the forum , trust me if you start playing with it youll keep spending money, there is always something that needs doing that costs money.

I would consider buying a juiced up banshee already but i'm a bit weary of the "never been raced, never been thrashed" line the seller would use, even though its got a nitrous fed 454 big block rumbling away in the chassis

Thats why i would do it up myself. but i will do more shopping around.

You make a compelling arguement.

For those of you who assumed that i'm fresh out of school into uni, i'm not. I'm actually 25. I have been in corporate real estate for 6 years, I've been involved in transactions and development advisory. Problem? Well being one of the young ones in the game, and especially given opportunities by my employer that some seasoned professionals don't even get, when we were laid off last year, its been impossible for me to get a job again, which is why I returned to uni to do accounting. I got sick of being knocked back from jobs because the recruiters make assumptions on my CV ie "he's to young" or "he sounds like a terrorist with that surname of his" and so on and so forth.

Before I went to uni, I poured everything I owned, and some borrowed money into starting a business. Months later I was sharked and now I am broke, and in debt. I won't go into the details but my money is gone, permanently.

So for those who tell me buy a house, go travelling etc?

after a bad experience in my first overseas holiday in 08, i'm not really interested in going back just yet

Me buy a house? Guys and girls, don't take it personally, but from my experience, what I have learnt in and outside of the classroom, but home ownership is the biggest farce in Australia. Believe me, if home ownership was reduced, we would have a vastly improved government.


So lets get back to the banshee and raptor debate? One of the reasons I want to either upgrade or trade is because In the last 3-4 years I have been getting heavier and I could really notice a difference while riding.

On top of that my old man bought himself a raptor 660 and I can't catch him!!

if i was in your shoes i would seriously add this bike to your pole at the top of the thread.

even if you were 150 kg and looked like "Batista" this thing would still tear your arms off.
and its all ready to go, all done, nothing to spend.

and theres nothing that your old man could possibly do to his 660 engine to get near you.

Man your Kleenex consumption must be massive. If you are broke and in debt, then your only realistic option is to stick with what you have and get used to the view of Dad's bum until you get back on your feet financially. Quads aren't anywhere near as important as food, shelter and a good job in reality. Your opinion on home ownership is unusual too given your background. I recommend it to any young person as it is a solid base on which to grow your financial future, especially if you can get into a reasonably good growth market such as we have over here in the West. We have been able to secure our future financially through property ownership allowing us the opportunity to retire in the next five years. Good luck and I hope Santa brings you something nice for Xmas.
