My 1969 Honda US90 trike has never had a rebuild. 40 years and counting. Mind you its never been over 35 MPH.

i think its all a big load of wank factor. if every single person that purchased a new 4stroke and rode it for 50hours n then had to rebuild the thing there would be no market at all for bikes/quads. the only time you should be rebulding your engine is when you have a noticeable drop in horsepower and you do a compression test and its low or if the engine starts burning excessive oil. there is preventive maintenance and there is over maintenance. the only reason the pro's r rebuilding their engines every race is because they can, they have 1000s of $$$$ to spend and they have no room for error because sponsership deals and everything riding on that bikes performance.

all i can say is be smart with what u do with ur quad dont go doing something cause the guys on tv or guys in magazines do it. most people in here would be mechanically minded just do simple engine tests that may takeup 30mins of ur day but could save u planty of $$$$. workshop manuals can be a big help when it comes to this.
sorry 4 the big essay Razz

theres something wrong if your rebuilding a yamaha 450 every 50 hours... they should only need valve clearance adjusted in that time!

a mate of mine has an hour meter on his banshee, and it did 300 hours without being pulled apart at all, no new rings, nothing..

i didnt re-ring my 2002 banshee until the end of 2008..

there's some good info here, yeah tom the baby is going sweet hey, 9.1 hrs on her now. and yes been using good oil. plus i not floggin the bike as it spends most of its time puttin about. lol

so pretty much it comes down to the old story of look after your bike and it will look after you (back pocket wise)

even tho my engine is getting rebuilt now after 42hours i need to say it was sounding a bit rattly but i think it was due to me been a knob and not running it in proply for i had alot of oil bypass into the air box,hence rattle lots of oil bypass. i think i mite have cracked one of the oil rings in the piston ?? i will find out this week ?? i had a 700 rappy and did over 80+hours and all that had was oil changes and one time valve clearances check and thats all. Very Happy

Rebuilds might generally go something like this for a good race 450...
40hp = 10 years
45hp = 2 years
50hp = 1 year
55hp = 5 race meets
60hp = 1 race meet
65hp = 1 race
70hp = 1/2 a race laughing

And the rebuild costs go up as the list goes down eek
Eg a 65hp 450 would have a $1000 clutch in it.

Pay for what you like, but i would not cut quicker MX lap times on a 65hp bike, so i'll stay in the 45hp ball park and be reliable all season.

Fact is Chad set the fastest laps in the country this year on a dead standard engine (with the airbox lid on).
So until i'm kicking his arse (won't ever happen)... i'll stay sub 45hp.

If that theory is not in the padock,
then draw your own line between an average family car that does 300,000km before a rebuild,
and 4 sec rail cars that can not do 1km and needs a rebuild after every 12 seconds.
Then count the $ per km and choose where you want to fit in Smile

full rebuild after god knows how long my dad rode it for
30 hours got a hi compression piston
50 hours got new rings
70 hours gudgeon pin broke, the ride before it was going to get a stock piston put back in,.
now a rebuild
oh well

interesting theory, kinda accurate too, although the factory race quads make 1 race meet and they're roughly 65hp

that piston would cost a fortune!!!! a 6mm bolt at work in titanium costs 10 bucks and its only 10mm long eek
but if your willing to try let us know.

ning that sucks about the wrist pin mate
