i want to stroke my banshee, the current mods i have are: dmc aliens, pro design cool head with 20cc domes, port and polish, .020 over wisco top end, dynatek programmable cdi unit, dynatek high output coil, 340main jets, 30 pilots, pro design air filter kit. ive been told i need stroker domes?? but i dont know what the difference is. ive found a kit from the states, wiseco pistons, bearings, pins, clips, crank (4mm), and a spacer plate. any info would be great!!

also, it may sound like a stupid question but, th mixture screws on the carbys... out is richer and in is leaner right??

how much money do yu u want to spend in the persuit of speed and reliabilty?
my personal opinion is if your gonna stroke it get bigger cylnders designed for the stroke, like a cheetah kit.
if you stroke the stock cylnders then it throws out your port timing. |

-stroker domes (stop the pistons from hitting them by being cut 2 mm deeper then your current domes)
-stroker crank (long rod or standard, whatever)
-wiseco 795 series pistons if you went with the long rod crank (4mm stroke 5mm longer rod)
-and you will need to get it ported for the extra stroke
you dont need a spacer plate if you get stroker domes ( spacer plates are not a good idea) _________________ 01 Banshee

Hey Doorslammer,
Why are spacer plates not a good idea?
I assume they are a cylinder base spacer.
I would have thought they'd be a good idea, but i really don't know too much about banshee motors.

people go on about spacers not being a good idea coz they "might" leak, but thats not the real reason they arent a good thing... hell ive seen motors stack 3 base gaskets and not leak, or even no base gaskets!!
when you add 4mm stroke to a banshee, the piston is 2mm higher at TDC, and 2mm lower at BDC. so with no spacer, the piston will stick out above the deck, and also require 2mm to be ground out of the floor of the port. now if you fit a spacer, it fixes the TDC problem, but adds to the BDC problem, now requiring 4mm to be ground out of the port. the spacer also raises the port timings considerably, which may not be ideal unless you are chasing a top-end only machine.
to make a stroker crank worthwile, you need to port the cylinders to suit. so if your going to all that trouble, you might as well spend the extra coin and get a cool head with stroker domes to suit, delete the spacer and have your porter put the port timings exactly where you want them, to suit your pipes and riding style.
so if you had to start from scratch and wanted to build a duner or occasional drag racer, and you had to buy a crank, porting and cool head, then you are probably better off going for a cub setup for not much more money. if you are more a trail/mx/play rider though, your better off modifying your stock cylinders to suit, as the cubs port timings are drag oriented.
if your original crank was in need of a rebuild though, and say you had a cool head already, the only extra costs would be the porting and the stroker domes for the head.

i have a cool head already, i can get the crank and top end kit for $800au and have it ported for $300.... where do i get stroker domes?? and whats the cost??

I thought a spacer at the base would be a preffered option as compared to up the top just for cylinder pressure reasons.
the upset to port timing you mention makes perfect sense.
I supose 2mm up is ok if you only want to port downward.
I can see that fitting the correct 2mm piston relief domes without a spacer will effectively give the same port timing and you to tune the ports 1mm either up or down without going to far away from standard breathing.
Is there any application where fitting the 2mm spacer and lifting the ports is ideal?
Ie how does this effect the std power curve?
Is there a general direction that Banshee guys usually go with their ports?
Or am i asking to much now, and getting into secret womens business teritory  _________________ Can-Am X Team

the problem with lifting all the ports is that you don't necessarily want them all raised. some you do and others you want lowered. but im not going to go into that because i don't know what im talking about with porting.
most banshee guys go in different directions with their porting, depend on what power you want. a port job for a motor that comes on smooth into the powerband and stops making power at 8500-9000 rpm is alot different to a port job where the powerband is like a lightswitch and the bike will rev out to 11000+ (numbers are just examples).
also nearly every different porter has different idea's on how it should be done, all the top guys are very similar in what they do it just comes down to preference.
and i dont know what you 4 stroke guys do in your secret time and im not sure i want to either by the sounds of it  _________________ 01 Banshee

There are heap of very experienced Banshee dudes on this forum who collectively make an excelent Banshee data base.
They are very helpful too, so don't be afraid to ask questions.
