Imagine this.
The Lord Mayor of Lake Macquarie does a deal with the lake's "Traditional Owners".
"We are going to start draining Lake Macquarie for the next 25 to 50 years (or till the water runs out). By the way, my business interests are involved with this deal not to make money but to help out the "Traditional Owners"
"The pesky recreational people wanted to water ski, fish etc on the lake but we stopped that as the lake is fragile, has spirits or whatever but we heard this big KA-CHING!!"
Now change this to Stockton Sand Dunes. |

Bruce and Robert MacKenzie have been working on this project for a lot longer than Bruce has been Mayor. You may not like the sand mining proposal, but to cast aspersions on Bruces' honesty and his reasons for being mayor is quite frankly, offensive.
I believe that being Mayor would hinder his chances for success in this venture rather than help. |

I'll tell you what's offensive. Taking away dunes that are supposed to be regenerating all by themselves like magic. Are they regenerating at a rate of 1 1/2 million tonnes a year? I don't believe they are otherwise they dunes would be all over Maitland by now.
I don't care who takes them away. Even people who didn't give squat about them till recently doesn't bother me. The fact that they are going is beyond a joke. The sand dunes at Kurnell etc are all but exhausted. What's that tell you? Come and take these ones next.
Sand mining from Fullerton Cove to Birubi might get your rocks off but not mine. BHP tried to continue their raping of Belmont Dunes but that got knocked on the head.
Hopefully, common sense will prevail. |

I don't have a problem with your opinions on sand mining.
The Implication that Macka is doing something under handed as Mayor, in order to make this happen, that I have a problem with.
Sand mining doesn't "get my rocks off", but, I benefit from sand (mining) based products everyday, from sunburn cream to concrete and even sand cast alloy products (one or two of those on quads I believe) Obviously, if mining stops, so does my use of/ access to, such items.
The practice of sand mining, just like the practice of burning coal to make electricity, are both necessary in modern society. in both cases I hear people saying "Ban It", but I don't hear any workable alternatives being put forward. |

Start by dredging Swansea channel which really is renewing itself with sand everyday. The sand by-products might increase in price a bit but at least its doing something useful. As far as using helping out who ever as an excuse will get old real quick when thinking people realise whats going on there.
Just don't p**s on my head and tell me its raining. |

I don't think anyone would be stupid enough to think that any successful business would undertake such a venture for purely altruistic reasons. But this partnership will bring in a Lot of money for the Worimi's. it will also have a flow on in jobs, and help sustain the building industry.
I believe that a private company approched the relevant government body around 15 years ago with a proposal to dredge Swansea for free, on the condition that they kept the sand. it got knocked on the head... |
