I'm thinking of painting my alloy rims black , Has anyone ever done this ?
If so how do you get the paint to take , do the rims have to be acid etched ?
Any ideas will be great _________________ The older I get the faster I was !! |

If you don't want to powder coat, sand with about a 400 grit and use some etch primer before the top coat. _________________ If it's not upside down, you're not trying hard enough!

Do the rims have to be sanded back or anything John so the paint sticks
or is it that good that you just spray straight over the top ? _________________ The older I get the faster I was !! |

Just check with petew
Ali bright is a good etcher
Powder coating is cheap like $15 a wheel nice job too.
Maybe the process would be 1 light sand on the rough bits 2. ali bright 3. Paint with etch primer 4. Paint with colour.
some where near it petew? _________________ Truth and Honor and Trust ... never under estimate Them. |

| even with sanding it, applying an etching coat then top coat i found they marked easily. I got mine powdercoated for $20 per rim...much tougher than black paint ever will be |

thought as a spraypainter i should throw my 2cents worth in here. U can use regular etch primers but id advise u go with an etch that is suited 4 ali. Either mix your own or buy it prepared. PPG, Alumiaprep, Prep & Prime, etc. Mixing your own is the least expensive source but u need to know what your doing (dont b a tight ar*e). Most of the commercial painters mix their own. "Hardware grade" is next cheapest, Go 2 an auto paint outlet or hardware joint etc. (phosphoric acid is a standard metal prep, used 4 galvanized and bare steel as well as aluminum). Next most expensive is "Auto Parts grade" PPG or similar. This comes already diluted... and for more money. Cut it 2:1 for use on aluminum. Most expensive (and most diluted) is 'Aircraft grade' stuff. Use it straight out as its all pre mixed & ready 2 rock n roll. As per any painting application the prep work is the most important thing, warm soapy water followed by a good degreaser, again warm soapy water then a good prep-sol, as mentioned above a hit with the sandblaster is a good idea but once done try not 2 handle after blasting. go a 30% satin finish (dont bother with gloss as it will only b a matter of time b4 it gets marked up. good luck with it _________________ 04 TRX 450r

i tried it all and the only one that will not mark not chip and always looks good is annodising. if your only running stock rolled edge rims just buy new wheels $100 for standard rolled edge fury wheels from austraco......cheaper way to do it and wont give you the shits all the time when you look at the rims and see chips. where i ride is a "profanity removed" load of rock and i barely have ever marked mine. _________________ pearcey277
