Industry News
Half yearly motorcycle sales result

Posted: Thursday, 9th July, 2009 : 5:20 PM - - 569 Reads -

Sales of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) have remained strong, despite a fall in overall motorcycle sales for the first half of the year.
Figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show 55,500 motorcycles, scooters and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) were sold in the six months to the end of June – a 14 per cent decline compared to the same period in 2008.

“This result reflects the impact of broader economic conditions,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

“Motorcycle sales are now at the level we would expect them to be and are broadly consistent with the trends in new car sales,” he said.

ATVs are maintaining sales in line with the record 2008 results with 9,722 units sold – down just 0.1 per cent on last year.

“This indicates the value the rural sector, in particular, places on these vehicles despite tough economic conditions,” Mr McKellar said.

“It appears the Federal Government’s business tax break is helping to maintain sales in this segment,” he said.

Road-bikes were the most popular segment in the marketplace recording 20,763 sales (13.4 per cent decrease) closely followed by the off-road segment’s 19,423 sales (15.3 per cent decrease).

Scooter sales fell 29.3 per cent in the first half of the year, recording 5,592 sales compared to the record 2008 result.

Honda was the overall market leader with 11,837 half yearly sales, followed by Yamaha with 11,393 and then Suzuki with 8,212.

Looking at the segments in more detail:

Cruisers were the strongest selling road bikes with 22.5 per cent of the market followed by 250cc on 15.5 per cent and Super Sports 12.5 per cent.
Suzuki, with 3,563 sales, narrowly led the road bike market from Harley-Davidson with 3,548 sales with Honda third on 3,477.
In the off-road segment, Enduro had 33 per cent of the market from Motocross with 28 per cent and Mini bikes with 21 per cent.
Yamaha was market leader in the off-road segment with 5,826 sales from Honda with 4,988 and then Suzuki with 3,018.
Agriculture had the greatest share of the ATV market (81 per cent), with Sport and Children’s ATVs each on 9.5 per cent.
Honda led the ATV market with 2,740 sales followed by Yamaha with 2,558 and Suzuki on 1568.

The second last line is our problem. Is all 4x4 or quads with racks classed as AG quads?

Our rec riders in NT would be 95% of the local 4x4 market eg 300 sales for a year which would be 5% of 4x4 sold true.

Our NT Can am dealer claims to the biggest is Australia.

Our Yamaha dealer claims to sell the most Grizzlys in Australia.

Our Polaris dealer sold 124 units last year.

Sweat FA Farmers in NT. Shitloads of Hunters

If this is in the AG mix we need to loby and get it changed because Manufactures won't sponsor us (sports quads)for our market share is so small.

Am I wrong?????

Good info Husky & you're right on the money about vehicle classes too, not just for the racing fraternity but for us recriders as well. All the registration authorities in thier respective states have to go on when considering recreational registration schemes is the death/injury reports on atv's. So every time farmer joe balances 3 haybales, 2 kelpies & a roll of fencing wire on the back of his aggy quad & sets off across the side of a 45 degree slope with no helmet etc,..... well we all know the rest.
There needs to be a clear deliniation between agricultural & recreational use.
cheers......

These sales figures are counted by who??

When the shop registered a sale do they pick a box?

Or do the manufacture do this and tell this mob what is what.

We definitely need a Rec class of sales. Are there more detailed Figures?

Does any body know the process?????

as for this data, it is collated by the ,federal chamber of automobile industries each manfacture has to supply data to this organisation each month/Qtr this is how it is collated. this goes for cars etc etc etc.

here is there link www.fcai.com.au/motorcycles/introduction

each manfacture has more detailed sales data like, brand, model, area code where it was sold, which they can use to target there market to each specific area.

this won't be able to be broken down anyfuther into Rec riding, as it goes by model and what that specific model is designed for.

this is great overall news for the ATV industry, and the data shows some great results.

Mick can you get The Can am results?

And I will try and get the Polaris.

Which Models are classed as a Farm quad???? Renegade ?????

And at what cc do they not be a Kids quad?

I wonder if they are counting Chinese ???

If its all about what a Atv is designed for its sorta wrong then.

i have the basic results that i can email them to you it only includes total ATV sales per brand and the top 10 atvs sales, which none are sport quads. not many people i know would be privlegde enough to get all that sort of info as it would be manfactures eyes only i would presume as the FCAI don't post all these it must be confidential.

really when you thing about it with vehicles, if i buy a toyota hilux, which is classed as a comercial vehicle but use it as personal which i do then it will come under comercial vehicles? no matter what i use it for it would be no differant with ATVs.

Mick I don't need to see the numbers but if certain models were classed as rec instead of Farm we might get a better hearing when it comes to support for the Australian industry. And the idea of seat belts horrifies me because 50 farmers a year kill them selves. I too used to be a farmer and never wore a helmet but when I went to the track I always had a helmet on.

Polaris gives a helmet with their Kids quads More responsible than than boat dealers. Ah Mick

Now how do we make some changes? which Goverment department???
