For a few weeks now we have been gettin those red belly back snakes every where over my property in bringelly nsw, i thought that the bloody things had or should have been goin in to hibernation by now as its gettin fairly cold here. Around 2 months ago i walked into my kitchen and dang!! there was a 4 foot black snake there and with a quick and startled ohh f#@k and then a Indian war dance following the broom came out and i beat it senseless , i know that they are protected but when i come's to its life or the life of my 4 kids from 1 week to 3 years old i know whats goin down first, and to my shock horror on sunday i was cleaning up outside and the wife started screaming at me from inside SNAKE , SNAKE again i crapped myself thinking i was beside one and i said back to her where? , she again screamed no its inside and savannah my 12 month old daughter has it in her mouth , i straight away thought that the cat had killed another one and dropped it inside and my daughter just picked it up and started chowing on it not knowing any better about it. so i went running inside to get rid of it and then i seen my wife backed into the corner of the lounge room holding our daughter and pointing in front of the lounge, i said to her is it dead? and said if it was i wouldn't be calling you. As i rounded the corner of the lounge with the trusty broom there it was, another 4 foot blacke snake i immediately pinned it down so it couldn't take off and asked the wife did it bite savannah as she has it in her mouth with each end of the snake wriggling around , she said i dont know. so i then with a huge knife i chopped the snakes head off ( not a real good idea on new carpet as i found out that they bleed alot) and then we checked her out for any bite marks and couldn't see any so as a caution we went down to the local hospital where they kept her for 12 hours for observation. but it all worked out well the daughters fine the snake never got a bite in , the doctors say that for the snake not to bite her after she picked it up and put it in her mouth and bit it , the snake must of been inside for a few days as we have the house air con on 24/7 set at 19 degrees and the doctor said that snakes need the sun to energize everyday and the air con cooled its body temp down so it could function properly . So i now the wife is on me to (Snake proof the place) now how the hell am i gonna do that.

FARK! Glad nothing happened to your girl.
I grew up out bush and we had heaps of snakes around , my parents kept a couple of cats as they recon they were good for keeping snakes away from the house.

F!@# me Billy!!! thats 1 hell of a story. your a lucky bloke with that snake not ending your kids life but also makes perfect sense what the doc said. reading your story a few memory's of living on my uncles farm came flooding back. 1st thing is get yourself a 410 shot gun (snake gun) & keep it locked away but also have it ready if needed rather then getting close 2 the things when u dont need 2, also dont go using it in the house or your mrs will throw u out 2 live with the snakes...lol but serious my uncle had a few tricks when it came 2 snakes & even just finding out what type & how many were around his homestead. snakes r usually drawn by water so 4 example if your place is in drought water around the house will lure them closer & thats when they take up residence, so u need 2 mircowave (1min) a saucer of milk so u can c steam coming off it, iv seen that method used 2 bring them out then u can deal with them prepared. another option is 2 get a silky terrier (great snake dogs) & last if u have field mice in & around your house go find a decent size python of any species, they will keep mice numbers down but having mice also attract the nasty snakes, i dont know y or how but if u have a resident python around the place the nasties stay away. 15yrs back i was @ a mates property in NSW, he was showing me around his new sheds etc & we came across a rather large python & he wanted 2 kill it & i told him 2 leave it b, 2 weeks later i left & a week after that he saw that python again & shot it, within a month he had the odd red belly come in close & he was spotting browns as u have described...c how u go...this is way 2 much typing 4 a quad forum...lol

Keep the A/C on all year round!

Do you have alot of tall grass, trash & crap laying around the house?
Do you have alot of mice?

Glad to hear your daughter was OK.

simple cheap solution,
get some plastic bird netting with approx 1 inch holes in it
if you get a whole roll of it and then chop it up into lengts about 2m long.
roll each of the bits up and then get a dropper and pin them to the grund.
spread them out around your house, and around your sheds.
for whatever reason snakes like to play with the stuff, but when they get in there they cant get out as they go thru the holes in the net and get caught. they dont have hands so they cant pull it off.
once one gets stuck it attracts more.
ive seen it work first hand.

also look at how they are getting inside.

We live on the edge of the bush too here on the Gold Coast
Last month my wife yelled snake i ran down to the garage
to find a 4' Brown snake out in the middle of the garage up and boxing with the cat and my 2 year old on the other side of the cat thinking the whole ordeal was just great I can’t express the look of terror on my wife’s face lucky we keep a matic handy but i know from past experience you just can’t beat a bunch of cats to snake free your house and a jack rustle to keep the cats outside !
the cats had it out with 3 snakes this summer all of them brown snakes its killed 2 and i killed 1
that cats an indoor and totally spoiled cat now in our eyes he’s a hero!

some one told me once that if you kill a snake it will attract more ... is prob just an urban legend but who knows could be true too

Wow man! What a story. We had lots of snakes around our farm when we first moved in. Now, none around the house and perhaps I may see one a year about 1km away.
The trick is keep the place tidy and GET SOME CATS. Go for long tail cats. For some reason they hunt more than short tail cats.

Cats hate snakes and an average cat will kill an average snake, or at least make it feel un welcome.

I still cant get over your story, Wow....

A few years back the missus and I were havin a bit of a blue so she cracked the sh%ts and went down the back of our place that backs onto farmland to water some stuff.Soon after she starts yelling at me so as a bloke does I turned the tv up and pretended I didn't hear her .She didn't stop so eventualy I opened the window and yelled out WHAT NOW.
She said I've been bitten by a snake. wow did I feel like a right bastard.
Waiting for the ambulance I told my young bloke to sit and chat with mum until the ambo's got there.he proceded to tell her about a guy on discovery channel that got bit and he died.(that realy helped)
A four day stint in hospital ,four vials of antivenine and a bout of serum sickness later all came good .
But she will never leyt me forget

Sounds like it was your lucky day with your daughter not getting bitten.

Talk to your vet and find out what dogs are good at killing snakes....and perhaps invest in one of them as an inside dog?

otherwise keep all external doors shut and put those wind draft things under the doors that lead outside...that might stop them coming under the doors

Think about our other wild life and the destruction that cats do .The only good cat is a flat cat . Go for the jack russel or fox terrier

My neighbour lost her cat and asked if I've seen it. I said, 'Have you checked under my tyres?'

my Dad was a contract harvester so my Mum would follow him, so we had no pets. We were in Moura at a caravan park when one day I (5yrs old) came accross some of the park kids teasing this tabbie. They had tied a string of cans to her tail and had enclosed her in a circle and she couldn't get away. My brother helped me get to her and I took her back to our caravan for milk. Then the next day while i was at school my mum heard a rusle outside the caravan window - she looked out and the cat was fighting a snake. I got my first pet that day! "Puss" moved with us from then on. She was very good and if a snake sneaked past her my mum always had a matik (good thing about a gardening mum) Smile

I will never forget visiting my parents at their farm when my first bub was 18 months - she started screaming on the back veranda (very unusal for that one) I went to see what was up and a snake had it's head caught in a mouse trap under the computer desk! still don't know what bait mum had used!

In the last 5 yrs in the NT we have had one snake at the workshop and none at the house.

I admit 2 snakes were on the track during the safari and I was worried about them coming for a ride with me but they went under the tires and wiggled off eek
