Hello
I am currently liveing in Canada but will be moveing to Australia next year
. I am wondering what the rules and laws are pertaining to atv use?
can you use them on crown land? can you use them for hunting? we are considering bringing one of these with us http://www.kawasaki.ca/model/teryx-750-fi-4x4-sport:1165
but we have been informed that you are only allowed to ride in off road parks or pvt property which is akin to a gerbil on a wheel for us.
Over here they are commonly used for backwood exploration ,mineing ,hunting etc. which we figured that it would be the same considering how large australia is and how small the population is.
anyways any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Kip |

depending on where you move to you should be alright, in queensland it is a bit limited, but down in NSW or WA there is more of a kind of "fad" for them, you can ride on crown land, so long as you are off the road, not bothering anybody and not riding in places like car parks and so on, it is still illegal, but i do it all the time.NSW
A bit of hunting goes on in queensland, but not much, mainly done by people that own a lot of land.
But if you are looking at moving to somewhere in australia that has a "population" for quad riding and so on, then the best places to move to are WA or NSW
That is only from what i have heard though, so it is best to ask more people before you just take my advice.
Good luck! |

i lived in Sask for 7 years and visited all over canada all i can say is
ATV riding is nothing like canada ....
there is plenty of places to ride here in oz
the terain is so differant to what your used to in any part of canada
where are you going to be living here in aus ?
bring 2 or 3 or 10 quads with you as shipping is cheap when your moving house and you can sell them for a ton of $$$ here ...... |

you cant leagally ride on crown land you cant go hunting on an atv, you cant ride in any national parks. you can take the risk but the fines are big and if you have a gun with you then its off to the big house. so basically if you want to ride your atv dont come here because th authorities are so anal about quads it is ridiculous. _________________ I had one of those but the wheel fell off |

thats pretty much summed up right there, Tasmania allow ATV's in some areas by way or permit/rec reg as does stockton in NSW. im in vic & theres no rec reg. U being from the states with many riding options wouldnt be impressed with the way ATV's r viewed here. its a never ending issue here & if u move here u will learn this 2...good luck with your move _________________ 04 TRX 450r

I'm from NT and there is a guy on this forum who hunts . PM jb and he can tell you the do and don't. Fishing hunting quad bike riding are the three biggest sports in NT . Motorsports is twice as big as any ball sport. fact _________________ Truth and Honor and Trust ... never under estimate Them. |

thanks for the replies folks.
I gotta say that i am a bit surprised at the restrictions as they are normally used on crown land here.
In all honesty though if it was the choice to freeze for 8 months of the year or live in Sunny Australia without a quad Australia wins hands down.
we like queensland and the wife and I are big outdoors folks (hunting and fishing mainly) but we havent settled on a place for sure yet.
just want to get all our ducks in a row so to speak. |

Just on the hunting side of things, Gun laws in Australia are very tight, (unless you are a criminal, then getting one is dead easy).
Bare in mind that I dont have a gun licence so this is just off the top of my head... and may be slightly inaccurate.
Guns must be kept in an approved gun safe (with possible inspections)
No semi autos
I think that pump actions are limited to 5 shots (I am a little hazy on this)
and magazines in bolt actions to 12.
Different licences for rim fire and centre fire, and you must show good reason for both. No pistols outside of pistol clubs, IE cant be used for hunting. and home protection is not an acceptable reason to own a gun in Australia apperntly (though it damned well should be).
with very few exceptions all hunting would be on private land....
The authorities dont have a sense of humour should they catch you breaking these rules. |

your firearms laws are similer to here . we have had to register pistols since 1934 and long guns for about a decade and in fact shooting and violence has gone up. Canada is similer to Australia where you are not allowed to defend yourself with a firearm no matter what.
Bringing the firearms over is not a problem as we have allready looked into it , in fact some of your laws (State dependant) are even more relaxed then here. I dont mind the laws and the hoops are easy enough to jump through.
we are planning on purchasing acerage and liveing rural so i can see that a UTV would be usefull there as it is here but we would have liked to used it for hunting ,fishing, photography etc.
it is 13 degrees below Zero as i am typing this so at this point i wouldnt care if i had to register pencils if i was allready living in australia now LOL! |

our firearm laws are NOTHING like canada Kip
while i lived in canada and was only there 1 week i managed to buy a shot gun and a Hand gun with out any problem
that wont happen here for you forget the guns dude unless your a farmer its pretty tough to get a gun
also kip there are NO hand guns period unless your either a police man or a security guard with a class 3 licence and even then you can only carry it if the company you work for supplies the gun and you guarding money ........
canada is like 20 years behind the stage australia is at with gun laws
you guys are still in the infancy of loosing your guns
i wonder if the yanks will run the border when you do ! hehehehe |

then you purchased them illegally because you cant have a firearm without a PAL(or the old fac) cant have a pistol without a restricted liscence and both have to be registered.
to get a fiream in canada you have need a permit since the late 70s FAC (any firearm) . pistols are for restricted use (to and from range like au or special circumstances allow for pistols like wilderness worker such as a free miner)
Since the early nineties you have needed suitable firearms training as well as getting a full investigation done by the govt on a federal level . The minimum wait for the liscence also (normally over 60 days while they investigate) .
Once you have been deemed mentally fit and criminal free then you can literally walk into a gun store and purchase a rifle or shotgun and get it transfered over the phone there and and go home with it. (Even in California there is a wait time)
For a pistol you need restricted permit (more training)on top of your regular permit and a range membership as well as a transport permit to and from the range. these things can take a while.
I have a hard time digesting your story but if someone did sell you a fire arm then it was contrary to the laws in place and like i said pistoles registered since 1934 and long guns since the nineties.
there is a huge firearms /hunting group in AU . I have allready been in touch with the AU authorities and it really isnt all that tough as long as you are sane and decent.

Ok boys & gals ease up on the gun stuff, some of the info being given is sketchy. If KIP gives genuine reasons 4 gun ownership & becomes a member of a club or shooters association he can get a lic. If KIP is going rural he can shoot providing hes not within a sub division any closer than 3kms (might b a bit more) . if he owns property he can apply on grounds to control pests, primary producer & sports (target/hunting) & even if he doesnt go rural he can still shoot. if hes not rural he will have 2 supply a letter/letters stating he has permission by a land owner 2 shoot on there property, he'll need 2 b a member of the aus shooters assos, a member of a local gun club & attend x amount of visits 2 that club each yr until he gets a "game lic" which allows him 2 hunt. In VIC u can go up into the alpines where shooting is legal but he needs that game lic but no UTV, if not he could end up in the shite big time. the gun safes, each state have particulars as far as gun safes go ( i know VIC & NSW have different specs 4 safes) but KIP would need a (state approved safe) & that safe must b setup at his residence b4 he can have his firearms. He can bring his guns here as long they r legal in OZ & he would have 2 submit b4 coming here what hardware he has & he would then b informed what can & cant bring in2 the country, there r forms he can get 2 import firearms, then its a simple case of passing the criminal check. He then can apply 4 either his longarms lic (cat A & B) which is the most common lic. After he has an address he needs a "permit 2 acquire" form which he'd probably submit with his lic app or earlier if hes bring his guns with him.
As far as firearms categories go the further down u go from cat A&B the harder it gets. im not sure about the pistol requirements, if hes able 2 have them here he needs 2 b a member of a pistol club & they would have there own rules & regulations. but back to the original question about the riding/hunting/fishing......he would more likely get in the shite 4 the riding...then get quized on his guns & is he licensed oh & by the way KIP no 1 has mentions here yet that ull need a lic 4 fishing 2....LOL _________________ 04 TRX 450r

not to worried about the firearms laws as i said . my wife and i have them because we are hunters and in that respect that seems fine.
Just had some Bear bolognase with pasta Yum.
I will be giveing away some before i leave and the ones that we bring are all legal in all the australian states. (you would not believe the work involved in migration ) . we are also bring some hound dogs with us which is a whole bunch of hoops also
we have been pretty good about getting everything in order but i have to admit the Atv/ruv rules hit us by surprise last week. I guess it is something we just took for granted considering the size and openness
Its a small price to pay to live in Australia .
I fell in love with the place in the ninties and after going through all the migration stuff my wife and i plan on moveing there before next winter we were there doing some scouting in Cairn (nice smaller city)and Brisbane (to big for us) in sept and we really liked the rural areas and a farm seems feasable for us.
.
Just trying to figure out what to bring and stuff. I am leaving my dual sport bike here as you have better ones there (xt 350) and i have allready gotten rid of my amphibious vehicle (6x6) and the list goes on and On.
seems like bringing a utv with us is a good idea

I suppose all my rifles ,pistols & shotguns are imaginary or illegal.

maybe you just woke out of your drunken stooper JB to flap off your mouth before your brain could process what i had said i hear the sun up there does that to people ..
i never said your rifles ,pistols & shotguns are imaginary or illegal
i said unless your a farmer its pretty tough to get a gun..
i also said if your security guard with a class 3 licence then you can only carry a hand gun it if the company you work for supplies the gun and you guarding money
i did not say you cant have one for your pistol shooting club nor did i say if you cant have one as a collector ..
State gun laws varied widely. Western Australia and the Northern Territory had severe restrictions even on sporting rifles and shotguns
any fool can google up the laws dude...
