i just siezed my big end on my 06 YFZ. Is it better to rebuild my crank or find a new WR crank setup. i am looking for the most reliable setup. and who sells cranks in AUS at a good price. also my cylinder looks a bit scratched from the rod siezing and the skirt rubbing on it. can i get this repaired or should i just replace it.
whats the best way of going about all this.

Cheers
Brad

As for cranks Pete W will be able to give you a good idea on what to go with as he has done alot with the Yamaha over the years or Adam @ Quadsquad also has a great knowledge. Also check with Wadey I think he still has a hotrod crank for sale.

With the cylinder I would suggest you go with an aftermarket barrel that doesn't pull out of round when correctly torqued like the original Yamaha ones do. Go with Max cube or N motion as they both have a pretty good reputation.

Re building is going to be the cheapest option, hot rods do a rod kit and also a complete new crank, both of which will be cheaper than a new crank from yamaha.

You can get your cylinder repaired and re-coated and it will be better than a new stock one, unless you can get a mega deal on an aftermarket one this will be the cheapest option.

where did the piston stop in the barrel when the crank seized?
Do you know what caused the crank to seize? generally YFZ's don't lock up the bottom so much as nip up the top and rip the bottom out of the piston generally resulting in the rod breaking or bending and coming out the front of the cases so it sounds like you are a little lucky.

yeh i have been looking at a hot rods wr crank and cp piston and a few mobs in the states have barrels for a decent price new oem. who replates these barrels in AUS and whats a rough price for it. and who sells hot rods cranks here for a decent price here.
it seized close to the bottom of the stroke, i had only replaced the piston about 10 hours ago and just changed the oil before this ride so i think that may have saved the piston letting go.
but yeh i have seen some good pics of what normally happens eek and i think i am very lucky. i felt it starting to surge at full revs so i backed off and it locked up.
i think i will do the oil mod now and put in the newer oil pump.
thanks for your help

Cheers

Barrels are replated by Electrosil usually less than $500. You can get it sent off when you get a new piston, try Adam from Quad Squad for a price on a piston and getting the barrel done, also for the rod kit too.
