There were a few kits available to convert trikes to quads back in the Dark times that was the late eighties.
3x4 conversions, and Astro conversions come to mind.
3x4 conversions were generally a bolt on kit and the Astro conversions were weld ons.
The Astro kits had more wheel travel and were aimed more at the racer. None of the conversions handled all that good. They were all a compromise.
To add a bit of mud to the waters, a company called "Phillips" (I believe thats what they were called) released new Tri Zs converted to Quads straight from their factory. I know of a few that made there way to OZ.
If i Had to guess, based on the photos alone I'm leaning towards a Phillips quad. The plastic on that YTZ looks like Astro from the side but 3x4 from the front, and not I'm sure not too many trike riders in Australia at the time would have imported a conversion kit from the states.
SO in answer to your question. This machine most definatly started out in life as a trike, but has been converted. It may have been converted at a factory proir to sale, so It may have never turned a wheel as a trike. But make no mistake it is a Trike in Quad clothing.
If you like a quirky bush basher, or historical piece, go for it. If you want to race.... Stay away, way away. way way away
Not my cup of tea. I think that those conversions are the work of Lucifer! or a PC burecrat, Same Same.
Terrible waste of a good trike! _________________ State governments give us REC rego + area to ride ATVs legaly! State Status: VIC-No (Nazi's) QLD-Yes(no place to ride tho) NT-? NSW-Yes, Stockton. There's also an '86 R at Salt Ash that has an Astro kit attached to it, the owner let me look at it some time back and may its soul rest in peace _________________ 1989 TRX 250R |
