my son is looking to race in 2009 in the 12-16yrs age group; 200 2 stroke / 300 4 stroke [modified]. I have looked in MA reg's and on this site but I am trouble finding the definition of "modified" . Do you have to use the original engine and then modify or can you swap in a 300 motor? If someone could clarify this for me it would give me a starting place to getting a quad for him to race with. thanks scotty. _________________ 06 700 raptor 50th anniversary |

Yeah I went thru plenty of old post and supp. regs. and it seems that OEM frames and cases are the "norm".I was thinking of a xr250 motor with a Ballards kit[280-290cc].Four valve motor and air cooled into a raptor 250 frame. Then I thought going along the OEM line would it be possible to sleeve down a 450 motor and smaller piston or longer rod to achieve a 300cc engine???? Any thoughts??? _________________ 06 700 raptor 50th anniversary |

I would recommend --put your CHILD on a blaster200 /raptor 250 or similar, and get him/her lots of good coaching so they can use the quad's power to its maximum potential, corner and jump properly and be totally in control.
The most important thing to keep a kid happy racing is to keep the bike running, with no mechanical failures, as more times than any, thats what is the most disheartening, dnf's.
Spend your money on good suspension and cleaning up the existing motor.
Believe me when they get to seniors, you will need the dollars then.
They will be in and out of 200-300cc in a blink of an eye.
Favourite pit board message------- Push the throttle all the way in !
This is my personal opinion having had 2 Juniors through from the 90cc, to 200cc, and now both into seniors. _________________ www.waquadmx.com |

Yeah it is a bit of mine field at the moment.Jed is 11yrs at the moment and is on a trx400ex.He's handling the 400 [+2 arms / widened axle]with ease and rides as well as most of the older guys on 450's. He turns 12 in March so I have some time to get things sorted. Thanks for your input. scotty. _________________ 06 700 raptor 50th anniversary |

We were recently looking at setting up a DS450 as a 300cc, so we asked MA if it was legal, as it did not say you could not do it in the MOMS (GCR's). They ran it by the required people and we got a flat out no. Good idea though if the kid is a big kid, but it will not be allowed under an MA permit.

ie under all disciplines
12.1.1.3 everything that is not authorised and prescribed in this chapter, or in the discipline specific chapters, is strictly prohibited.
So many grey areas in the book, that can be interpreted so many ways, depending how you want to read it. _________________ www.waquadmx.com |

12.1.0.2 Unless otherwise staded, the requirements of any discipline specific chapter override the requirements of this chapter.
But that's not the point.
The rules say 'Modified'.
And some how it's fair that rich daddy's spend $20,000 to $30,000 on 'Modifying' Blasters.
Only 3 limitations: Max displacement, 12 -16, and Junior must be capable of tipping their own quad back up.
Thats it, they're the rules.
But as said, watch the event sup regs _________________ Can-Am X Team

I will have to bookmark that rule.... when an over zealous steward tries to make quads put numbers on the sides of their bikes !
Thought I was going to cop a fine for that argument ! _________________ www.waquadmx.com |

i dont see how they can change the rules in the sup regs?
it clearly say's in the rules 200cc 2 stroke/300cc 4 stroke modifide?
but if i wished i could take a crf250 engine in a yfz 450 frame to a club run, and then i can not race it in a open because the people change the sup reg rules from the rule book?
im a bit confused. Even though im moving to seniors next season im still curious. _________________ dummett #26 mxc |
