Hey guys,
I need some technical help working out what size (
watt) spotties I could comfortably run on my Honda TRX400 FA. The service manual gives me some specifications which I've listed below.
I don't need spotties that light up the whole country side and cost a fortune just middle range ones. I'm not sure if I should run two identical lights or one wide beam and one for distance.
The manual is showing the front lights are 12v 30/30W x2 with a main fuse of 30A.
The alternator puts out 0.32kw/5000 min -1 (RPM)
What wattage lights do you guys think I could run without damaging the circuitry and kill the battery.
Will post some pictures later of my quad bike frame I just painted with a two pack tar appoxy. No way this thing will rust away now. Its like malasses and you need a low pressure gun to spray it on.

Really good reflectors (glass and lense quality) will give you good light without pushing the wattage up too much.
You can probably also get some really trick globes.
maybe just 35W's in top quality will be the go.
I'd guess that 'spread beam' or 'pencil beam' depends on how fast you ride.
the faster you go the further you'll want to look down the road.
But then if you are slow off road windy or sand dune sort of stuff, you'll want a fair spread so you can see where you're turning.
A big white spot from a pencil beam in sand dunes makes riding really hard.
It would be good to get a recommendation from a two wheeler enduro fella who does 24hr stuff etc.
Let us know what you end up with _________________ Can-Am X Team

for your interest...
I ride a Brute Force 750 and have spent alot of time researching lighting for my quad. I use it primarily for hunting and often this is at night. In all of my research I hit alot of dead ends and finally ended up just experimenting. I ended up running a 100W light force spotlight from a home made bracket. I have had the light wired directly to the battery so worst case scenario would mean that the battery would go flat from extended use. I did have someone put a volt meter across the battery when the bike was on full load and the charge was adequate to keep the battery up. Often at times I also run a hand held 100W spotlight. This means that I have two 30W headlights, 1 brake light and 2 x 100W spot lights...things have been trouble free so far.
The light force is a good light, I have had them on 4wd's, quads, handheld use and fitted to a number of guns I hunt with.

I run a pair of 55w H3 halogens on my bike (TRX400FA) with no charge problems at all, 100 watters would be a problem though. Another option is some of the neat LED replacements available nowadays, low power consumption and good light output
