i went 4 a ride today and i got about 1km and the engine just stoped and the bike rolled to a stop and it then wouldnt start so i got a toe back to my ute then i went to start it once i got back and it fire up so i quickly tryed to ride it on to the back of my ute and it stoped once again and wouldnt start anyway i got home and it started again my only thort was that the ignition coil is getting hot and it stops working till it cools down is this the case if not does any one know what it could be.

sound slike it could be a blocked fuel breather, check your tank cap and make sure it is breathing properly, I doubt that it would be ignition related with symptoms like that prbably more fuel related, could be worth also checking your fuel tap and the needle & seat in the carb.

i dont think its a breather problem the bike was running fine and just stoped if it was a fuel problem it would have run ruff befor stoping it was like the key was just turn off. i started the bike this arfternoon and i run it for about ten mins with no problem i think its something electrical it turns over fine and i can smell fuel out the exhast.

i dont want to be riding 50km away from my ute and have it stop so any help would be great

petes right it sounds alot like fuel try just running it with its fuel cap off and even fiddiling with the fuel tap then go for the carby

Just appease everyone and try removing the fuel cap & see if it rectifies the problem.

If it is a blocked breather it doesn't run rough, it just stops. If you leave it for a while it will run again but stop again.

my new ktm kept stopping on the track the other week and it ended up being the fuel tap being turned on slightly to far so it was between the on and off position therfore it trickled into the fuel bowl then i used what was in the carby it stopped then would not start until the fuel bowl was full again it took about 30secs to start again

my quad wouldnt start for about 5-6 mins so i dont think its a fuel problem

ok but its not very often in my experience that things like stators and coils stuff up due to heat but have u tried checking the wiring from these components for continuity

I've seen this problem with a predator before. Pretty sure there's a diaphragm pump for the fuel under the front cowling. When this fails then the fuel doesn't transfer to the carb. (I think when we pulled it apart the screws had worked loose retaining the diaphragm). When the engine is off it slowly gravitates past and fills the bowl, but can't keep up beyond idle.

sounds like a good start if its vacumn fed u can block off one side of the hose and it should run but fail that its just a replace and hope item

Mate, were not saying 100% it's a fuel problem, but taking 5-6 minutes before it would start still doesn't eliminate a blocked breather hose.

Have you at least tried removing the fuel cap and seeing if it fixes it?

i have taken the fuel cap off even on the day i was riding it i did. im a desiel mechanic so i have some idea but im not all that good will electronics and ecus i work on old tractors with mechanical pumps and so on

ok thats good u have an uderstanding of mechanics then well if u done that id be tryin with the pump even the fuel line could be crimped of where it sits between the fuel tank and the rocker cover had this senario on my bosses outlaw 525

it is running fine now but im still not shore if it will stop again so this weekend im going for a ride but im going to stay close to my ute. ill take my tools from work with me and if its stops i will try find out what it is it will be easyer to fined the problem when it happens

What you need to do is descipher if it is the fuel system or the electrical system. Start with the basics to diagnoses the two. If /when it stops pull out the spark plug and then reinstall it into the plug lead. Hold the spark end of the spark plug against the engine block and then have somebody wind/kick the engine over. View the end of the spark plug while doing this and see if there is any spark. If there is a good spark you know that the problem is fuel related. Usually you will get a bright blue spark to jump from across the spark plug gap. Another ways is to jam a screw driver into the plug lead and see if there is any spark jumping from the screwdriver shaft to the engine blog. Hold the screwdriver shaft about 2-5 millimeters away from the block as if it touches the block you will not see the spark. If there is no spark then start with the small things first, check kill switch power in out, check ignition power in out, check coil power in out. Work through the system and find the fault. If you have spark then it is fuel related. Same again once it stops you need do a few basic tests. Pull the hose off the fuel tap and check for flow, if there is no flow it either means that tap is closed, plugged or the tank cap is blocked. If all ok pull the carby float level plug out and check for fuel, if there is no fuel then there is no fuel getting to the carby. Check all the lines and pump flow. If there is fuel to the carby then there most probably a problem in the carby. Blocked jet feed hole etc etc . Might want to take it the dealer as there is a fair few little parts in a carby and a little setting up after assembly. Hope this helps.

By the way, when testing your spark plug, make sure you use a pair of insulated pliers to hold it as you might get a bit of a boot if the plug earths through you. Also make sure there is no fuel on the engine or near vicinity as you may go BOOM.
We all would not what that happening.............

Yeh I know, i would not use pliers myself as i would be too lazy to find them, but i was just covering my ass as i would hate too see someone get a boot and then blame me for there pacemaker having a meltdown.
