Hi, I am up for a chain and sprockets, was wondering if anyone can give me a simple run down on gearing.
I have total standard gearing and chain.
Was wondering what a bigger or smaller rear sprocket would or would not do for me ?
Standard is 40 tooth rear sprocket, was wondering what a 42 or similar might do for me ? Or even a smaller one might do ?
I like to stretch the legs out and give it a good blast along the beach and do a bit of jumping !
Keep on getting left behind by the 450's and 700's...
Any help would be appreciated as the chain is getting small kinks I need to do something ASAP and the sprocket now has fair gaps between each link, and the chain cannot be adjusted anymore. Sure sign of wear....

If you go up say one tooth on the front, that will make your overall gearing taller, but slower in pick up. Going down a tooth will lower your gearing giving you quicker accelleration with lower overall top speed. Doing the front sprocket change is cheaper also. To calculate different gearing ratios, divide the number of teeth on the rear by the number of teeth on the front. If your'e not happy with the front sprocket change then you could do the rear. The smaller the rear, the taller the gearing and so on.

Bigger rear means slower.I preferr to add teeth when changing geering so things last longer(esp frt sprocket & chain)-more surface area on sprocket & less 'bending' of the chain joints.Ive changed up 1 to 14 on the frt(for flat track racing, may need to go more) & still have enough 'grunt' for slow stuff.X ring chains are a GOOD investment.

Redted 14/42 will give you a ratio of 3.00 as opposed to 3.08 this will increase your power band all round.

gday raptor rider. Ill tell ya right now champ most of these guys know a hell of a lot more about this tech stuff more than i do, when i asked a few of the guys in my quad club they said as greenhuman did, front sprocket is cheaper, & when u go up a tooth, more top end & go down a tooth more pick up. the thing i ended up doing was buying 1 of each. My standard tooth on the front is 14, i also have a 13 for when i want to go up into the hills & in the super tight stuff where i know i wont get the thing out of third, then when i go on the flat out open trails ill put the 15 on so i get more top end. tooths for my bike are $15 each & i still use the same chain, so theres an option u might try?, mind u right now some of these blokes are probably shaking there heads at me & if i am wrong please let me know fellas....cheers

Countershaft sprocket
- More teeth = higher top speed
- Less teeth = more bottom end

Rear sprocket
- More teeth = More bottom end
- Less teeth = Higher top end

Going up 2 teeth on the rear is similiar to going down 1 on the countershaft sprocket.

Like Jet 762 & Greenhuman said: rear sprocket / front sprocket = sprocket combination ratio
for example 42/14=3.00

Hey Big Jb TRX450,sounds good/logical to me. Cool Remember the chain-go at least an O-ring or if you can afford an X-ring.They seal better(lube in & s#@t out) & use less H.P.

Gents, thanks, I have gone for a 14 front for top end speed and 40 standard for the rear with the x ring chain...
Will see how it goes, if no good in the dunes, I will go the 12 at the front...
I never get out of 3rd in the dunes in hill climbs, the power is so outright in the 660 with the twin carbies, but want a bit more top end to try and catch the 450's and the 700's along the beach or in the open straight runs.... the 07 yamaha's bloody go, I keep eating sand... need a turbo or nos kit to catch em think, thanks again.

Yeah got the sprockets and chain the 14 tooth front sprocket seems to make a difference, more top end, 4th and 5th gear really winds out now, noticeable difference, not any power loss down low i can feel at all.
thanks for your help...
Glad I did this as the front cog looked like a backwards ninja star...should of checked it earlier.
Might have to try the 16, wil give it a few more rides and get an average, just got a trailtech and will see how it is going now.
