I broke my collarbone 40km south of the Jardine . after riding The Weipa croc Run in 1993. I think that was the last time they ran it. I rode with a group of guys mainly on DR 350s . After the crash the guys taped my left hand to handle bars everyday so get back to Carins .

Mick did you ride the CREB track? what would give to be 18 again!

I was asked the following question in a PM and thought a few of you might be interested in the answer...

"Was wondering if any other sports/rec type quads made the trip other that the Can Ams.

What were they and how did they go?

A question as in how suitable is a Rec bike to the ride as opposed to the

400ex/4fitties/700's,Baja style enduro style bikes."


Other than the Can-Ams, there was a bit of everything.
ANy bike is really suitable as long as it can cruise on about 90 kmh comfortably and has been well prepared.

I was super impressed with how far all of the bikes could be pushed.
Sports quads only really function well in about 500-600mm of water (to generalise).
4x4 quads were good for up to 1m of water.
But if it got deeper than that a sports quad was easier because they float.
I was lucky enough to make it through every river on the Outlander, but honestly, if some of them were 100mm deeper... you'de be stuffed on the big 4x4's and I'd rather have to swim my DS450 anyday.

Having said the above, Steve Johnston just cruised across one deep river on his Outlaw 500 IRS like it was a puddle.

Comfort is a big issue when you are riding 2800kms.
So big plush bikes were good alrounders too.
DS650's, Raptors etc.

Something like the smoother 400EX's and Z400's were good alrounders but you probably would not want to go below 400cc.

Smart preparation was the key.
Big tyres, Good electrics and sealed airboxes etc etc.

It is definitely not a beginners trip.
Not that it is all hard, but there are sections that are technically dificult and you pretty much have to keep moving forward regardless.
I'd recommend it to anyone with reasonable quad experience.

We got heaps of footage.
More that we've got on any other trip I'd say.
I'm sure it will come up great, and Mick has just started cutting now.
Don't hold your breath, the DVD's usually take a while to hit the streets.

Goat Only footage I have seen of creb track is from a 4wd video and apart from a hil climb didnt look at all challenging unless it was raining.

Maybe a good short trip to do early in the dry as heading for roaring meg falls, wanna see a bit of water on them!

Have you seen something else in way of footage?.

I know at one stage someone was advertising a Cairns to Cooktown type run, maybe that would be a good one shortly after the wet?

Wheras going to the Cape you want the rivers to have fallen a bit?

It pissed down the entire day when we ran Creb.
Was a little tough on the 2wd's, but the 4x4's had it easy.
Movie should be out around Christmas.

Did any 500 Outy/gades go? How did they fare being same weight but less power?

What was the feedback like on the handlebars at 125kmh on the corregations (if thats where you were doing it), are they a light steer at pace?

Did they corner alright (outy/gades in general) their a big weight did they balance up well against the lighter bikes because of CoG or suspension or was it real knee down come around girl, kind of stuff.

Is there any reason you can think of why you wouldnt do one in a Razr conditions wise?

I could go forever.... better stop

No I don't think there was any of the big Can-Am 500's there.
There were a few 650's and they are not far behind the 800's at all.
The 500 has a shorter stroke and they don't have the awesome push of the 800.
This can make them easier to ride though, because if you are not smooth on the gas in the rougher stuff on the 800's, they keep ripping your arms out.
The 500 would definitely go everywhere because most of the stuff that would stop anyone were technically dificult obsticles.
You didn't need anywhere near full power for most of these.
The 500 would sit with the fast pace which was around 90 - 95 all day but it wouldn't have too much extra.
Where a 500 might push 100kmh with a favourable tail wind the 800's will push 125kmh.

When you push a Rene or Outy hard in tight stuff they do lift the inside rear wheel a lot.
It does not hinder the rider who most of the time would not know it is happening.
This action is the internal sway bar lifting the inside rear.
Much like a solid axle.
It could be tuned out a bit with heavier duty front springs but that would be at the cost of ride comfort.

The Outy wallows and leans more than the Rene for sure.
But it's very predictable.
It requires sort of like an earlier weight shift style of riding.
Once you master that though... you can go every bit as fast as any other quad.
I quite enjoyed the Outy in that respect, more body language required made more fun to ride.
If you didn't like it you could 'slow down'.
I was flying sideways into open dirt road corners at 100kmh and holding it out all the way through.
You could not ride like that all day though because you would just end up overtaking the tour leader and that costs you a carton of Crownies.

The steering and handle bar feedback was good at high speeds and on corrogations.
All the heavier bikes seemed more stable and the lighter more toughly sprung sports bikes were a lot more physically demanding in that stuff.

Gee an Razr would be fun.
More challenging and slower, but fun.
You'd want to set it up to be able to go underwater.

At the end of the day, it's not a race.
But ideally you'd have a machine that is comfy at 90kmh highway speeds.
80kmh might be fine but you would have to concentrate on keeping moving and would not get as much opportunity to stop for smokes, photos, scenery etc.

Husky being inspired by your coment I had a look at my 4wd dvd last nite and I'll have to upgrade my estimation of the CREB. True there are some much more technical/difficult sections on the run. Its just parts of the old telegraph track appear much more difficult on this film.

But to be blaise about the CREB even in the dry is not giving it full dues at all. From my 15 minutes of footage it was deeply rutted in places and certainly crests enough that in a known race course would be a fun jump but on an unknown track would leave you with a hope and a prayer if you try and overpace it. Throw in a few creek crossings and you've definately got a good warm up stage!

And the 4wd footage was 5 years old so i best leave it to the boys and the video to lay it out for us.

Like all, cant wait.

Thanks to Bullett for "indulging" all my somewhat obvious questions on technical riding and conditions.

Best do as was intended and go out n buy a big flash bike and book with the group of about 15others reportedly booked in from Vic.

Thinking Razr I went on a search last night that found a bolt on Turbo from US at $4500. Sounds expensive but they are claiming increase of 32HP to 72HP. 40HP!! Crikey!

For an 800 to be only carrying 32HP these engines must be being strangled to death, so even just airbox and pipes coulkd get you 10. Maybe 32 RWHP? Even then youre talking then maybe a 100HP engine at crank. Thats possible I guess.

But Im blown away by the 40 hp claim.

Too bad I forgot to mark it, I hope Im remembering right.

72HP sounds like a traveller though. May need to tame that a bit if you want good throttle control.

The Renegade 800 motor is 806cc and they are 62hp this years model and the 800R is 67hp.
There are 85hp 800's in the US with these engines too.
And it's just external bolt on and not a turbo or supercharger.

So I would not doubt a a turbo Razr having 72hp.
That should be quite easy.

They'd be a pretty heavy bus too, so you reckon you'de need a bit of poke.

Im not doubting the 72hp but to start at 36?? What the?? People wouldnt be buying them if that was the standard figure surely.

Gotta have been a typo or gumpy reading the figure wrong. And in doing so over double the HP? Ive only seen that on the most worked motors more like between 15% (car) to 50%?? (BIKE) as sort of std figures. Confused

If it was inclined to be a sinker too I would seriously go for some floaties, either heavy duty pvc or styofoam balls in some very tight netting down each side and go for walking it cross, unless I had the pre-experience to run snorkell and breather lines for tranny etc. and some oversize 26inch tyres.

I guess again its and endless list of options., Gain height,make it float make it breathe......

But the Turbo gives me a little twinkle in the eye! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
