If anyone is genuinely concerned their use of an outy will cause damage to the frame I found this in tech tips on NYROC.
Hope it comes through as I had to sign up to read it but if you cant its a welded up, 3 piece quad angle spine that fits like a glove dont the Outy's central spine. Completely inside and hidden from view.
If I just spent money on a new outy I'd be pricing that up as should be less than $1k easy or even just good home job and heapum more strength.

well done in that find,
But hell doesnt it make you wonder what and why this happens , like hell the money you pay for a quality product and u have to do this as a precaution, im not having a go at the brand just the fact that this sort of thing has to be done to a 14 thousand dollar quad _________________ 2012 Can am Outlander Xt 1000cc

But why do racers gusset their quad frames ?? why not buy a quad that will take the punishement in the first place ???? because thats how it is. Didnt you make your own tow hitch for the grizz, because of the crap cast ones Yamaha make, But a simple mod in the shed for an hour or two and you have a great quad even better... why not buy a quad that has a solid steel hitch in the first place ??? Because you wanted that one and you bought it, I've had to upgrade my brakes on the KFX, was told to do that before I even handed over the $$$ I still bought it. because of one deficency, why buy a another bike I didnt even want. The fix looks easyenough, I'm sure Canam will take this on board sooner or later, lets face it the yanks are dumb but their not stupid. _________________ 2005 KFX700

More so yogie i was being a tight a-- cos was not prepared to pay the 70 bucks for the oem one.
Also i would not see the improving of your brakes as a defficiency , but as perley a improvment.
Chassis strenghtening is a deficiency in a utlility quad,
And yes yamaha and hond both have rust issues in there chassis, i have seen 2 year old bikes broken by rust in harsh conditions in the dairy industry purely based on design flaws allowing sh it being built up in tight spots where it cant be freed.
All bikes have faults , and yes owners talking about faults will certainly make manafacturers fix em.
I have to also say that after sales repairs on the Can Am are exceptional, as i own 2 bombardiers that had a brake issue and was recalled for a fix, this was unknown to me until i searched on a Usa forum,i then contacted Cam Am ie BRP by email and it was quickly fixed by means of allowing it to be taken to a dealer and then rectified, now im talking a bike that is over 5 years old.
Now i dont see Suzuki doing that in ther ltr issues , and im sure yamaha would not as well.
We all make improvements to our machines or enhancments , or simply we personalise them,
Racers come inot a different category when it comes to mods , but as standard trail riding on utility quads there should not be a need for major mods so as to not bring out design flaws ,, lets hope that maybe the outy guys will all get free bash plates and the ltr guys get the new gears as required _________________ 2012 Can am Outlander Xt 1000cc

M personal suspiscion on bent frames out of the US is if you have a look at a lot of their ride trails etc, they have a lot of rock hopping and I guess the thing we have in common with them in wilderness area's is wash aways. drop off etc.
I see that rock hopping as a test most factory built machinery isnt able to handle, see all the moded 4wds that do rock hopping.
Like both Yogie and Grizz have pointedout its kinda human nature to push man and machine to the limit, its just a frame failure is viewed as fairly catastriphic and rightly so.
The unispine frame was one of CanAms claimed innovations for the outy/gade series and obviously weve found the limitation of that in some cases.
Yeah I'd expect CanAm to be doing something about it. in the mean time, easy peasey lemon squezey if you're concerned. Id especially consider it for the cape run as well as the bash plates.
I actually found the fix before I found the faults on that site (in fact I didnt find the frame faults on the site at all, gumby strikes again )
Cheers me boyo's

| Hope you get a better run out of the outty than me I have a 800max xt and it has been nothing but trouble since the day I picked it up. 6 drive belts, 2 winches, 2 head units, set of springs, cvt cover, seat melting, 2 4wd switches, 2 fans, 2 radiators and tranny needs rebuild , motor dusted all in 214hrs of mostly used for hunting with 12yr old daughter doin the driving with me as shotgun. Also ditch the plastic 90d bend in air box for a uni filter item but run standard cleaner as the OEM bend has got 1 nipple only and has a tendancy to end up in bottom of air box ,where the uni item has 2 and cannot fall off. I found this out the hard way after finding my air cleaner sittin in bottom of air box and now have dusted motor, I contacted Can Am and was told that they know of this happening and to use the uni filter bend to stop it. All nice to know after it happened as usual with Can Am Aust. they stick there heads in the sand and hope a lot.By the way all the stuff listed was at fault of Can Am not me as I have also done 2 cv boots but that was my fault. |

Hey Matee I think getin it serviced sounds like it would have been a good idea I've done 40Hrs on my Outty and have'nt had a problem with it. As for things going wrong. I've had a few things go bust on mine and my dealer fixes it each time I get it serviced if it's under warranty, not a problem |

We used this mod as a repair after one of the guy's ran a Renegade into a tree up the cape. I found the correct size steel hard to get as you need imperial sizes and most steel in Oz is in metric. Stainless however is easy to get in imperial so we used that. About $90 worth of material and about ½ days work if you know what you are doing (I don't but I have a Chuckles). The Renegade was a banana, but it did hit the tree very hard, plus she went over a few times. This fix is a good one, but if you ride it normally and don't crash it, you should not need it. We have done Finke, Australasian Safari, Bullet and I did the Les Jensen Cape York trip plus Bullet has raced his in motocross (and won) and we have not bent a chassis yet, but we have not had major crashes either. When we heard about this issue, we emailed the design guy's at head office in Canada. They were going to work on a gusseting kit, but they are close to finishing a whole new designed chassis. I guess this will come out on the 2010 models.

Like Mick said, I've done some pretty crazy stuff on the Rene and not bent a chassis, but if you are going to have a big front on crash on one side, after your life... it would be the first part to be concerned about
Phill Peters of Shallow Water ATV does some excellent full length bash plates for the Renes and Outlanders.
I ran a proto-type for some extra protection during Safari.
They look cool and it helped me slide over some big rocks without concerns.
Phill keeps modifying and improving his designs, and one point of feedback I mentioned to him, is that future full length skid plates could incorporate a few more mounting points so that they actually reinforce the chassis against transverse forces too.
He never designed the plates for that, but they would add significant strength if the back front a-arm mount is picked up and the forward nerf bar mounting bracket.
If you're interested, harass Phill
www.shallowwateratv.com.au
he makes really nice stuff.

| Hay rossco you say that you have done 40 hrs and no probs so you happy. As for gettin it serviced you also say that everytime it goes to get serviced the dealer fixes any waranty work. Question how many times has it been to the dealer in 40hrs of riding as you say it has been a few times. Servicing only due every 50 hrs?. Also to pay $16K + for a bike and say you happy it hasn't broken down in 40hrs leaves me wondering. It would be nice to be able to drop it in to a reputable dealer every time it plays up , but the closest is 800km away so services are done at 50hrs not 10mins ha ha. Can Am are trying to help with my troubles now as I think it was just a comunication thing with their rep. Bike has gone back on transport to be replaced at Can Ams cost. |
