This question has probalby been asked a thousand times, since getting the Grizzly the kids want a quad of their own. My daughter is 9 and the little fella 6 this year. We are debating as to weather we get them a 90 and a 50 cc chinese quad to start with or get them one decent Jap Quad first up between them. What have other people done in this situation and what Jap kid quads would you recommend as the little fella is showing alot of interest and may look at racing eventually. Any comments will be appreciated.

Cheers Whitey.

Ive read that E-ton bikes are a good compromise, giving comporable quality at better prices.

Cant back that up with any experience though.

Think theres a few Moms to ask and dads of course if you search around a few posts.

Yeah E-tons are good.
I have a son who is 6 also. I just purchased a 90cc honda sportrax. He finds it easy to ride. Three speed no clutch and speed gov. Great little bike.
This bike can be also modified later on when he has grown or just needs more POWER. ha ha. Ive heard of children up to 12 to still be riding them with a few mods ( a-arms , big bore etc)

If your going Japanese then you can't go past the TRX90, ultra reliable and as has already been stated, upgradeable.

I'd also be looking at the Can-Am DS90X, probably a little more flexible, as a learner machine it has a CVT rather than a manual gearbox and comes ready to go with nerf bars etc.

not sure about chinese builds but most name brand minis seem pretty bullet proof and a few of those are manufactured in asian countries anyway. Polaris & Eton both worth a look.
If you can stretch your $ get them one each = less arguements.

don't know how much he'll want though, it's about 2 yrs old from memory.

We have had our son racing the E-ton 50cc for three years with minimal problems, would rate it VERY reliable and learner friendly,CVT, good build
quality and easy spare parts. He is now on the E-ton 90cc and once again
CVT reliable, not what you would call CHEAP CHINESE these bikes really do provide good value for money, highly recommend. Maybe a 50cc for your son and a 90cc for your older daughter, in Vic you can race 50cc upto age 9 and can't start racing 90cc until 8y/o.
Cheers Deano.

For the money and options you can't bet the Polaris 50 & 90
Work well - have resale value and the kids love them

Thing about all the brands is most of their parts are made in China/Korea, whatever. Its the spec and quality control that will count. Bit of a sweeping statement about manufacturing but not a lot of machining going in in states or Japan.

And retail value for on-sale, yes you wont get anything to onsell a Chinese no name bike, but markets gotta be pretty low atm with shakey economy. Only thing keeping quad values up is lack of supply to meet demand.

I have a suzuki ltz 90 that i am going to sell .It has been an awesome little quad but my middle kid has now out grown it and my young bloke wants to go for two wheels Sad Sad
I also have a chinese 110 in the shed that i throw my empty stubbies at coz that is all it is good for. Mad Mad
Go a reputable brand .
When you go for a ride there's nothing worse than having a stupid breakdown coz your little ones will scream the house down if you can't fix it. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
Ridetimes valueable, repairtimes sux

Thanks for all the comments, we are leaning towards the Jap brands (a Suzi as the kids reckon yellow is a nicer colour than blue or red lol) at the moment having trouble finding a Eton dealer in NQ. A old mate reckons the Aeons aren't to bad as he has a couple for his kids and hasn't had to much trouble yet any opinion on those have seen them advertised in the mags.

Cheers Whitey.

I now have trx90 polaris 90 eton 90 all good but the honda is the best of the lot never lets me down
My 7yr old rides / races the honda trx90

Cammo

Good to hear from someone who's lived with maybe number one and then say two in line in terms of quality and so get an idea of the e-ton Vs the Jap/american bikes.

So I guess then if you want to go down a more serious path you'd go for the TRX type combo. Pete had a good point in CVT, I havent checked the specs to see what the E-ton comes with.

But that a point from racing?? Or both points of view?

Is the TRX also a more fun, simpler and easier to use bike out of the bo and how long til their skills outgrow it?

My own 18 month old is a lil young for answering these questions now but I always like to be pre-informed on a subject so I can have an opinin before I talk to anyone.

So a couple of years of market watching wont hurt + maybe he'll be looking at 2nd versions of these bikes in particular.

Ta bloke!

Gavin

The cvt is easier to start on as you dont have to worry about gears
My lad started riding his trx at age 6 with no prior experience in using gears . it took a while but now has no trouble changing gears
My experience the trx was easier to handle than my other 90's straight out of the box its wiser standard than some of the other quads in the same class therefore its more stable
The trx's 1 down fall i found is those balloon tyres get rid of them & it handles even better
it all depends on the child also my eldest loves her polaris scrambler over the trx mainly because as Pete said you dont have to worry about gears
I went to the dealers & asked for a test ride some said no but most said ok (unfortunately the test rides were mainly in carparks) it was a good way to see how the child was able to handle the quad
Hope this helps

I also went down the same path, I bought a Vmoto 90 $1450 new with warranty, I figured at that price I couldnt lose. It's done 2 years of reasonably hard riding with no problems at all. They are a copy of the polaris predator 90. Its been a great entry level bike but I will stick to the jap stuff for everything else.

Spoke to a bloke at work he has Suzuki Quadrunner 50 that he is going to sell for around $800 it is in good nic about 2 year old, he wants to go over it and fix everything that needs doing before selling. The reason for selling is that his boys want a bigger quad, i know him pretty well and he is very fussy with his gear especially if it has wheels. so know i just have to line a bike up for the daughter. Thanks for the feedback guys it is making our decision easier.

My 2c ...

I have 2 boys ... Mikey (Cool and Matt (5). If you want to see how Mikey rides ... look for "Mikey is Action" in "Chit Chat".

Mikey started "riding" a 3 wheeler electric bike at 2 (was his birthday present). He then out grew that, and we decided to get him a quad. We went for the most back Chinese quad there was. Here in South Africa it is called a Mini-Rex. It was a 50cc CVT with nothing. However there was a remote kill switch, that could be activated with a button not much different to a car alarm. He rode that for 2 years, and started MX on it.

We these saw that he had outgrown the bike, and rather that get him a 100cc, we still thought he should says (and learn) on a 50cc. So we bought him an Adly 50cc CVT. A lot bigger, with more power. He raced that for 15 months, winning the Regional Series on it last year.

Now this year he races a Cobra 70cc. It has 5 gears, and is a fully setup race Quad (I am not saying get one of them Wink ).

What I am saying is slowly. We all [like to] believe our little ones can handle the bikes. We may believe that it is better for them to grow into a quad ... I disagree totally. It will only take 1 big spill, and the missus will wanna sell the lot and the little one(s) will never get back on again.

First bikes, get cheep, or if you know the chap (like you mentioned) get a good 2nd hand one. Although I would stay away from bikes you don't know. There are NO cheep and NASTY bikes around. Yes, they break, but so do TRX's. And lastly, get 2 ... like someone else said ... less fights!

UNLESS ... you do have a bigger budget. Then look at getting 2 Jap bikes. But remember that they may not both take to it like you may think ... and it may be money waisted! These things loose value every time you look at them!

Last point ... KIT. Get all the kit ... the more you put between them and the floor, the better! OH ... and if you can ... keep them off the MX track (see "Mikey in Action) ... you get good photos ... and you need them ... cause you eyes are always closed tight ... Wink

Hope this all makes sense ... It is intended as advice from someone who has done it with Mikey and is busy doing it with Matt.
