Ok
How is everyone doing
This is my first post so i hope i don't start a war here
Just bought my young fella a cheap chinese quad to get him started he is only 7 he loves it and wants dad to get one
Now i am waiting for the new Honda 700 trx to get here i'm told it will be here in about 3 weeks i think it looks awsome on picture we will see ?
Or do i wait untill october when the 09- 700 Raptor comes onto the market
what do you all think...bearing in mind i have never had a quad before |

Hey buddy,
You should take a look at the Polaris's. The 525 comes into different models IRS and straight axle. I have been looking at these lately, there priced pretty good at the moment aswell. I think there around the 10k mark. There supposed to be quiet quick aswell, being they run the KTM racing engine. It may be worth a look.

Im with Timmah.
Dont know if you're a power junkie or used to high power bikes.
Just remember this isnt a car or a bike you'll have to train to get your cornering, lips, gradients and the like correct and theres a lot of power there to train on.
If I had $17k k odd for like one of them neither would be my choice.
But the polaris outlaw is in the country and $4k off retail at under 10 and they're power to weight will just about match these bikes.
For all these bikes you have to consider what comes standard and what doesnt, do you need nerf bars to keep your feet off the ground, will they idle well enough at low speeds to go with the young fella? Definately check the list of stock fittings, coz upgrades can mean an extra $4 before you ride if you dont buy correctly.
But to conclude Im with Timmah, get a Polaris, and I'll charging half the money I just saved you for that reccommendation thanks!!

I recommend you sell the chinese bike, dont spend so much on your bike and buy your son a honda 90cc By a CAN-AM for you !

HI Mate...I have just gone through what you are going through........fxxxing my wife off by Stopping at every bike shop we pass to look at quads, Spending hours on forums. After months & months of looking trying to decide which one to buy..
In the end I bought a Grizzly 700... Is it the best quad around... Properly not.. Is it a good quad...O ya....
You just need to decide what you want in a quad, for me I liked the diff lock the power steering and the 3 years warranty and a good dealer, oh ya and the 4k discount per quad.
When I was looking for a quad and weighing up the pros & cons of each quad I kept on coming back to the Grizzly, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of the top makes.
My number 1 tip..... Tell the salesmen that you are in talks with another shop and never buy on the same day wait for them to get back to you the next day, they will always come back with a better deal, and if they don't find another shop. (sorry that was 2 tips:+

Is it just me or is true that there is only two KTM models in the market?
Which is supposed to gain them market dominance?
Yet the competitor they lent their engines to is undercutting them by $3-4k in Australia atm and the KTM bikes actually look like Polaris?

Welcome to the site canislupus.
The 09 raptor has a few worth while improvements front shocks & speedo/trip computer but you could save a few thou getting 08 raptor.
Don't think there will be much between Raptor & Honda powerwise.
The biggest difference is the IRS on the TRX700XX - more moving parts, better ground clearance & longer suspension travel looks like Honda might be on to something, time will tell. The Honda is about 25kg heavier & I think built for bigger riders I would be looking for a test ride to make sure it fits right. _________________ Raptor 700 |

Thanks everyone for the advice
I have always had Honda's and Yamaha's as a kid (dirt bikes ) so want to stick with them even though the Polaris on spec seems a good quad
Found out where my ATV club is turns out it is 30 mins up the road so will be contacting them so thanks for that
I will test ride Both of them and then go with my gut feeling if i go for a 08 raptor you are right could save a few quid and get my son a better one
I am getting a tow hitch fitted to the car today... priced up a trailer thats $2700 hey you can't put a price on fun
Anyway in the next few weeks i will reveal all |

went into the yamaha dealership yesterday...they had KTM's this is the first time i have had a look at them
They look a nice quad....... even the sales guy in there said they are the best quad on the market pound for pound
I said to the guy whats wrong with the Raptor he said nothing but the KTM is a better quad......great that's thrown a spanner in the works mind you they do look a bit of an beast
Man this is hard in the perfect world i wish i could line up all 3 of them and take them out one after the other |

All great looking bikes and theres more you could throw in the ring, coz I think that most producers realise they're top of the range model better look the bling!
But as far as I understand from these 3 bikes is there are some very different mechnical differences to look at.
Mainly:
Honda: 700ccVtwin, shaft drive, IRS
Yam: 700cc single, chain drive
KTM: dont know what one in particular you were looking at, but the seem to be that Polaris is leting them use their chassis cosmetically to the greater extent while they USE KTM's engines? Not sure Ive seen enough of KTM's expansion to 4 models yet, are the different again?
But 510ccsingle, chain or chain & shaft depending on IRS or straight axle version.
I'll be glader when these two get out of each other pockets coz I think they're only taking sales off each other, not so much off the other brands yet.
I'll bet Handa's V-twin and shaft drive come with quite a weight penalty too.
One could only wish to be in your dilema!!

also like that stealth look design of paneling

I can relate to that.
I was tossing up the idea of a new quad & then I rode a KTM 525 test bike. Next thing I knew was that I was selling everything I owned to get one!
But, like everyone else has said, work out what type of riding you are going to be doing mostly & then ask a lot of questions & read a lot.
The latest ATV Action Australia magazine has a test on the Honda 700. Might be worth a read. _________________ If it's not upside down, you're not trying hard enough!

Thats good news I think. KTM have been a little slow to bringand new models to the road market though, but seem to be regular updaters of their dirtbike range? (I dont follow that at all really)
So with KTM going for 4 models this year but aimed directly at the offtrack racing Outlaws/outlanders. We have 4 racing variants?
I hope the have something more recreational in mind, but that doesnt seem where they sit in either road or trail production bikes.
I would like to steal my way into KTM R&D and ride the KTM990 enduro that surely must be sitting there??? Waiting to dominate another class, race, world?? lol
I would just like to see someone go at Canam and Polaris for the crossover vehicle market. Most are on racing or utility, but Yamaha have a couple of wolverine models they see fit not to import at this time.
I just think they are positioned best for the next best competitior at fun bikes.
And Im sure Grizz down here will be the first to testify theres nothing his new 700 cant do that everyone else is doing and in a lot of cases a lot better. Maybe just some styling mods? Theres some great pimped out models if you look.
