g'day all , I gave my new yfz450 a thrashing for the first time at port gawler today and it was ace.... but im relitively new to sport quads and the thumb throttle. After doing a few runs of the enduro track my whole right hand was kramping up. Is this something your hand gets use to. I myself have seen heaps of reports on how the thumb throttle sucks on the the yams, but i thought all the testers were softies...... how wrong i was.

Should i switch to a twist grip or should i Persevere.

depends if your were a 2 wheeler rider most likely go to a twist

myself i prefer the thumb but it is horses to courses really try find a quad to try with a twist and take it for a ride if ya like it get a twist throttle for yours

I also find I get a massively sore thumb/ hand from the throttle, esp being female with small hands. I was going to change over to a twist as I have ridden 2 wheelers but decided against it due to the terrains I have ridden - I was likely to severly injure myself. I also got to try one and found it really hard to stay in control over rocky ground.

A few of the boys from Quadriders SA have twist throttles and love them. Discodanz who posts on here is one of them, you should see what they think.

Yamaha's are known to have stiff return springs in the carbie, you can buy softer springs from a guy who is on this site, www.ratmotorsports.com.au/products/other/index.htm
I think they're around $35.
I'm going to order one for my quad cause i suffer the same problem but have a motion pro twist throttle and cable. I prefer twists seen as i used to race bikes.

just a word of advise
i have found if you put in one of the softer slide spirings if you hit whoops or jumps at speed it will cause the throttle slide to bounce and the bike to bog over jumps
i have tried one of these and changed it back
the best thing to do is to buy a honda throttle assembly(parts) for a 450r
and then buy a trx 90 lever as it is longer and has better leverage
i have done this and even with the stock slide spring the throttle is real easy (no cramps at all)
also dont worry about the hona parts on the yammy the housing doesnt say honda on it if you get the 450r housing and cover

i think it will fit but i have not tried it i used the housing as well
but i also think half the problem with the throttle is the position of the lever in the housing that makes it uncomfortable
if you are looking at doing this you could use just about any honda thumb throttle(trx400 bigred 450r) and not use the trx90 lever and it would still make a difference
if not just buy the lever and if it doesnt fit then buy the rest of the housing
you could also pick one up from a bike wreckers for stuff all
i will check to see if it will fit in the yamaha housing and let you know

hi as ms 450 said i have a twist grip on my yfz and to be honest i dont know why anyone would want to have thumb on there quad it decreaces your ride time by tiering you out and in my opinion they are dangerous ,, when your going over whoops your thumb cant fall of with a twist throttle ,, the guy in sa who is winning all the pro mx races still uses a thumb throttle but he did have a huge get off because of it when his thumb slipped of the throttle just as he was taking of on a big table top he ended up nose diving the thing pretty bad ,, i have only had one dodgy moment with my twist grip that was after landing a jump real ugly and pulling on the gas when i didnt really want to and ended up going over the top off a berm..
well thats my two cents worth im not to sure when we have a weekend of from club rides or racing but when we do im usually out at port gawler you should be able to spot me mines the yfz with the new shiney orange plastics and the fat grey haired dude riding it come say hello ill be more than happy to let you ride it to see what you think

I think the whole thumb v's twist throttle debate is purley rider preference. I can see why a lot of the ex bike riders can't hack the thumb throttle but I much prefer them.
I tried a twist on my raptor and it just didn't feel right launching off jump ramps or on harsh landings. One trip over a berm instead of around it was enough for me to switch back to a thumb.
I've never had a problem going over whoops with my thumb throttle, but I have had the dreaded thumb cramp many times. I suppose the only real way to overcome this is to get up more time riding time eh!

I come from a two wheeler background many years of racing MX, and also I have growen up on farm quads as well. For me I can use both just as well. I had a Raptor with a thumb but I couldn't ride my YFZ's for "profanity removed" without a twist. And now I just sold my twist throttle kits for my LTR's because I prefer the thumber on them. I guess i'm a little weird though

persevere with the thumb throttle for better control, or get yer skirt outta the chain and go buy a pushie. just kidding lol it's all a matter of personal preference
