Lets say you've got a yfz450, your a professional mechanic and youve got all the fancy tools and know-how.

how long do you think it would take to remove the engine from the bike, tear it down, replace all the stuffed parts with new ones (that youve already got) put it back together, and put it in the bike?

ive only ever rebuilt banshee motors so i wouldn't really know, but the only real difference i can see is a couple hours more work in assembling the head, ie the valve seat inserts, valves, springs retainers etc.

i reckon if i were to do it myself, with my limited knowledge and tools, that i reckon i could do the 450 motor in two full days (16 hours).

a professional mechanic should be able to do it in half that yeah?

It would depend to a degree on how far down you had to strip it, ie. disassemble transmission shafts etc strip cyl head cut and lap valve seats
and whether or not replacement parts were std replacements and not modified components ( which may require dummy assemblies to get clearences and fitment correct ect. ) but 10 - 12 hrs should be sufficient for a standard rebuild.

I would say 10 hrs to pull down and rebuild bare eng and extra 2-4 hrs to remove and replace eng beck into machine, run up and test operation

Why do you ask this, have you had a problem
The thing to remember is when you are guessing the time to do something, this will always be out. Add a bit more on
The other thing is you cant rush perfection

If it were a straight forward job...
I'll bet if a good mechanic was doing the same operation, by the 3rd time he would nearly halve the time his first go took.
Nothing beats experience and having been there.

think how long your first banshee rebuild took you compared to what it would take you now 4stroker.

take your time on the first one.
attention to detail pays off.

I'm with huey there, 10-12 hours depending on circumstances, completley bare cases say you could add another hour pretty easily as can a seized pivot bolt etc.

where the experience comes into time saving is knowing what you dont have to remove to get the engine out and which order to pull stuff out in to make it easy.

also bear in mind here that some quads take longer to reassemble than others (for example it take probably half an hour longer for me to re-fit an engine to an LTR chassis than it does to do the same for a YFZ)

Yeah, and having the tools required in your head before you start.
Just not having to find a shorter or longer socket, or grind 3mm off the end of a punch or prebend a spanner etc.
Knowing which side the gasket usually sticks to, all that sort of crap totals to make a big time difference.

On average the bike shops here in newcastle will charge you $1500 to 2500k labour for a full build on a 450cc four stroke engine.Normally one day to disasemble inspect clean and quote.
Then the quote is approved by you or not(if not you get it back,it will be out of the bike with the motor in a box in peices this will still cost you a couple hundred for there time)
The parts are then ordered and the motor will sit there untouched for weeks...mabe??
All the new parts are then installed ,put back into the bike serviced and a full warrenty is given.
For this service you are not going to pay $500 .
you guys are forgeting the running around as well to the machine shop, contacting different suppliers, freight charges...ect
They are in business to make money and enjoy there chossen profession, they cant keep everyone happy But if you think that stinks you can always take it to a guy who works in his shed (not saying that is a bad thing but these guys can keep there overheads down and are happy to make $500 a week on the side tax free.I know I have done this and been caught out.
I would hate to add up a full parts list build for a 450 4 stroke motor from say honda or yamaha ,it would be cheaper to buy a complete motor than one new in peices.

Remember when your bottom ends starts making funny sounds its time to trade it in,or you to will be handing over thousands just in parts alone. even if you do the work yourself...my02c

You said it yourself $80 to $100 an hour at 2 days is $1280 to $1600 now thats if it takes 2 days (mabe get the motor together)you still have to get it back in and take her for a spin.
