Hello all,

I have been thinking about this for a while. How does a petition to one of the manufacturers sound. Get them to do some background work with the RTA.
I think this could be seen as quite lucrative for them - First on the market ... and so on.

Has anyone already tried this?

Which one would be best?

A couple of us that ride grizzlies & king quads have been chucking this idea around, after a group i ride with got pinged by npws coming out of bendethra just after chrissy. It took us ages to convince the guys we ride with to get farm rego as they own a large area of property around braidwood. Basically if we can get full rego , we will be allowed to ride in state forests legally. what peeves me is that if a cr500 full on motocross bike can have a headlight, indicators & brake light fitted to comply for rego then how is it that my kingquad, with headlights brake lights rear view mirrors & indicators cant?? the prob i found was that dotars want to classify the quad as a motor vehicle instead of a 4 wheel motorbike. This then means it has to pass crash testing etc. if it was classed as a 4 wheel motorbike ( which it is ) then it would be easier to rego. RTA told us all we need is a compliance plate form the manufacturer & they will rego it. I know in england there is a loophole that allows quads to be ridden on the roads. I for one would gladly pay for road rego & greenslip for my quad, as long as it passes road worthy, & noise testing. Even a fee to ride in state forest areas. I can tell you from experience , our quads do lees damage than 4x4 & registered trail bikes where we ride.

i think you would have more luck getting a trike registered, due to the 4 wheelers being classes as motor vehicles...

a road regoed atc250r would be pretty cool to belt down to the shops on!

I talked to a company who does compliance for motor vehicles etc, they said provided the quad bike could be regarded as a 4 wheel motorbike they could look at doing the compliance, but it would cost upwards of $25k. He also said it would be hard to pass stability testing with offroad baloon tyres. But hey, put a set of lower profile road/ trail tyres on. If i had the money at my disposal now i would do it. But i cant see why i should do it & then set a . Manufacturers should get off their bums & get compliance. Hell they would sell a crapload more quads, & we could ride them a hell of a lot more places legally. It would also save greenhouse & carbon emisions if i could zip down the shop on my kingquad rather than start my hsv up . It is also a good way of regulating the industry & keeping the tools off the roads & tracks. win win for every one.

Yeah good point, if you can chuck a rear axle & 2 wheels on a harley & register it as a legal roadgoing trike, then why can't a ATC be registered the same way...

Hey guys, thanks for all your help.

I know that I am floggig a dead horse but just think if I could get somewhere!!!!!!!!!!

I have just shot off an email to the RTA asking for some technical infromation about the classification of ATVs etc.

When (if) this comes back I might see what I can do about getting a manufacturers attention.

Some good points were raised above and hopefully I can start the ball rolling.

It's my understanding, if an individual was to comply a certain model bike/quad, they would then own it and the manufacture would have to recomply of purchase your compliance approval.
There could be a change of getting back your $25000 but it's a long shot.

Muddog, let us know how you go. there are a lot of people in all different fields that need to be involved in this that have the "can'ts". It is just a matter of getting to the right person. My uncle rang the rta technical dept & the guy was helpful & just said the short answer is gat a factory compliance plate. The guy i rang, was a toss & just got on his high horse about it never happening. If people took their blinkers off for 2 mins they would see that it is a sensible way to go. If they can do conditional rego for stockton & farmers rego , that technically allows a farmer to ride on the tar a certain distance, then why not a full rego? Or a rego that allows them to be ridden only on lower speed limit roads. eg not on the expressway. Unfortunately, i think quads have a perceived reputation at the moment similar to sport shooters & hunters. when ever i tell someone that i ride a quad, their instant reply is , "ohh they are deadly". Its only the tool riding it that is to blame.

scooter, you may be right. its something i will be looking into a lot more, thats for sure. It is just easier for the manufacturer to do it. It would be great if the manufacturers actually put something on their quads ,stating that they are a 4 wheel motor bike. hell last time i looked you didnt sit on your car to drive it. I think the main issue is convincing DOTARS that it isnt a motor vehicle.

yeah i agree a motor vehicle is something you sit IN and you are surrounded by it (roll cage, roof, windows etc) where as a motorbike is something you sit ON

This is the link to the company that i rang. They would be the people to do the compliance side of things.

It is just getting dotars to class the quad as a bike.

Shagger I think your right on the money we rang around and around a while ago and it came down to that exact fact we have fixed axles, I believe that all those Harley trikes we see have a diff modified to them.

I believe we need someone or a manufacturer to design a diff so in cornering the outer wheel will slip, you will have half the battle won. But I bet this would be ordanary on dirt. I guese you cant have the best of both worlds.

But hey I would buy one.

I was ride the dunes with Bullet and at lunch we were talking a fair bit about the pro's & con's of road registration.
Locked or solid axles was a big thing to the rego people because when cornering one wheel could brake traction - scary stuff !! Rolls eyes hence would have to be a diff in the rear.
There was some talk of a bolt on adapter that would free wheel when there is no drive - this could be possable.

well on the ag bikes the diffs already there but this is how you solve the problem on the sport models with chain drive and straight axles:

http://www.willrace.com/cdd.html

youd probably want a disc brake on both sides too with a diff

The locked diff, is something i know might be an issue. I can attack that later, as above, my king has a locked rear diff, being a utility quad. One step at a time, & the main thing is to get quads classed as a 4 wheel motor cycle. The silly thing is , that there is quads registered for use on public roads now, its just its for a specific job. My bro helped setup kitted out grizzlies of the federal police for use at parliment house. even if we are limited to 60 zones etc on tar. i personally think the locked diff is a mute point on tar any way, ist not as though they have a huge wheel centre like a car.

That right I know I read it somewhere
Coast to Coast - wished they'd asked me to fill up the bikes.
Be cool to know if they had permits or
rode it and sorted technical transit bit later on.

The permits are easy enough to get once you know who to ask. They are just expensive and take ages to get organised the first time you do it. We (47) crossed the Simpson Desert on quads for a film shoot last September using these types of permits. Check out our newest dvd on the cover of the next issue of ATVA mag, "Quads Across the Simpson Desert". We explain how you can do it in the movie.
