you wanna beef up a bit JB?
bit of light weight training, push bike riding will certainly help but there is absolutely no substitute for bike fitness. riding more will work the muscles you need for riding even if its only play riding and low speed work it will still help. _________________

i would say alot of core work on the gym balls etc would give the biggest gains
and high intensity cardio work outs _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |

Hey JB I've tried all diffrent kind of things like swimming, gym, personal trainers, jogging, footy training with my old club. But i'm very lazy by nature and if i'm not enjoying it I just wont stick with it.
I need to train proberly more than most because i'm one of the oldest Pro's in the country, I love a beer and crap food and I'm around 103kg's. I'm sure Ant Yewers can relate to this.
So this season I said to myself they can stick their gym's and yuppy health clubs i'm doing it my way. Over the summer break I didn't ride my quad from the end of the Nat's untill about 4 weeks before the first race. But I did a sh!t load on my 2 wheeler in the bush every second weekend in the Otways and about 2 nights a week down on an enduro loop I setup not far from my place.
That kept my base bike fitness up and 3 weeks before the first round I crammed as much time at my loacal MX track as I could on my quad about every second night doing long 15-20 min motos at about 60-70% race pace and the week before I pushed that out to 30-40 mins but only 1 sessoin a night.
Come the first round at Canberra I am sure I was not the fittest bloke there. Some of the guy's looked like skun rabbits but I think my bike fitness was a little better than most.
I am lucky though as I have two great training spots within spitting distance from my front door and I always have bikes that are ready to ride whenever I need them.
P.S. As I type this it's 7.00pm Thursday night i'm sitting in my riding gear stinking of sweat having a beer for rehydration after doing 1.5hrs on my dirt bike on my endruo loop
I don't recomend this training method to everyone but it's working for me and i'm enjoying it so I will stick to it _________________ Smitty |

maybe you could arrange a carton of something and I'll come help you train _________________

So that's your secret Smitty, get really sweaty then rehydrate with beer.
Seriously though, it's great that many of the pro riders are so willing to help anyone with advice etc, even if it means giving away a few trade secrets.
From my experience everyone's training regime will differ depending on what works for them. You need to look at where your weaknesses are in terms of bike fitness and structure a program that focuses on improving those areas.
I never get puffed out on a bike but my muscles get tired and lose strength, especially upper body so I've been trying to do a lot of swimming and free weights at the gym, with a focus on muscle endurance rather than gaining strength. Other riders will never get tired muscles, but will lose control of their heartrate and breathing, then can no longer perform to their maximum. Intensive cardio training would be a good start in this case.
Smitty is right though, there is no substitite for time on the bike but it's difficult for most of us to ride twice a week, let alone every day. The trick is to train smarter, not harder, in order to get the maximum benefit.

The best place to start is with a good bike.....
Then balanced diet, tonnes of hours in the bedroom...
Then when you can fit it in, hit the gym and get more practice in your bike as much as you can...
No substitute for hours in the saddle..... both saddles that is.... |
