Hi All,

Ive just read a few posts and thought this a good site to get some honest views on a subject I know minimal about.

Basically this is the scenario:

Im going up to Stockton Beach in a few weeks with a friend and we were thinking of going halves in an ATV. Problem is our budget. Would love to afford a Banshee or Raptor but cannot Sad

Essentially im after a recommendation if the 250cc quads you see on ebay (from like $1400 upwards) are going to do the job. Brands such as Atomik, Foxico etc i assume all come from the same factory just branded and marketed differently.

We dont intend on keeping it for a long time as we dont have private land and dont have too much spare to get away. Ive also read that the cheap ATV's dont generally last longer than 6 months before things start to go wrong.

In a nutshell we are wondering if:

a) It is worth buying a "cheap" eBay type ATV (we dont mind spending up to $1800 max and might only use it a few times)
b) if a 250cc ATV is enough to not get stuck in the sand, get bogged or general issues you would expereince at Stockton (we have only been once years and years ago and dont quite remember it Smile )
c) If A or B are yes, then if anyone has any recommendations for our price range.

Obviously the more we spend the better its going to be but we wanted to try and stick to our budget. We also have to take the rego, number plates, CTP into consideration as well - but I heard you can get 3 months rego for Rec use or something like that.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Cheers.

Alex.

We tried our 250cc chinese quad that we owned not long back at Stockton and found it couldn't handle the dunes and soft sand.

We even changed tyres to paddles and still without success.

In my personal opinion you would be better of with a second hand Japanese quad for Stockton than a new Chinese quad.

Are you after a sports quad or an ag type? I know a guy who has a Honda Big Red 300 that would be in your price range.

Some friends bought Atomik - rear shock came apart lifting it off ute, ok on beach but more time spent pushing than riding it in dunes - stock blaster ran circles round it.
If you buy "cheap" quad use it a few times you be lucky to get 1/2 your $ back.
Have a look for 2nd hand Jap/Polaris quads (eg warrior, blaster, scrambler, EX300/400 etc) if you spend a little more you will have more fun & lose less on resale.
If you have to buy cheapy compare a-arm, swingarm, shock mounts & frame build against Jap quad - look for weak points & locktite all nuts & bolts before you ride it.

I realise it's not in your price range but that is a good price for a well built quad. Split between you and your mate is $2k each. That's for something that will outlast you if serviced regularly.
