TWO men riding a quad bike smashed more than 30 mailboxes with a baseball bat in the Hodgson Vale/Cambooya area yesterday morning.
The men, described as Caucasian and between 20 and 30 years of age, smashed 36 mailboxes on various roads including Strand, Savage, Ramsay, Cambooya Connection and Drayton Connection and the New England Highway from 1am.
Police said they had received reports of neighbours seeing the offenders in the act of demolishing the mailboxes, often climbing fences to get to other random mailboxes, some of which were about two square metres in size.
Cambooya Police Station officer-in-charge David Grave said it was believed two Cambooya men were behind the damage.
Sixteen reports of damage were attended by mid-morning. Senior Constable Grave said he would have to attend another 15 at least throughout the day.
"Dogs were disturbed and some residents even watched as the two men started their attack on their quad bike as early as 1am," he said.
"They may well think it's a prank, but it is a crime.
"It is wilful damage and due to the style of life out here it is quite a serious threat due to the isolation."
Senior Constable Grave said the offenders could be arrested on a number of charges once caught including wilful damage and the traffic regulation of their vehicles.
An Australia Post delivery driver at one of the addresses on Strand Road said yesterday the destruction had hurt various residents.
"It is a senseless act, but it's not something all together new," he said.
Senior Constable Grave said police wanted information from neighbours who may have heard a quad bike leaving or returning in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Why couldn't they do it on a 2 wheeler or in a car?

I had my mailbox smashed about 2 months ago and damn they're expensive. I've got a pretty good idea who did it, as i got cranky with some hunters for shooting right near our horses off the main road and within a week my mailbox is destroyed.
