Has anyone else had issues with snapping rear sprocket bolts?
Yamaha manual says 55 Nm / 40ft-lb. I just snapped 2 brand new ones. One let go at 30ft-lb. The head (hex end) is twisting clean off. Yes I am turning the torque wrench to tighten,not the allen key. Am I reading something wrong?
Sprocket Bolt $6.00
Sprocket Nut $6.40
12 month rebuild $Blood sweat and tears.........
Last job on the list after a very long 12month rebuild, now I cant ride for another week while I wait for Yamaha to post me new ones...........
Not priceless, just pissed!
Any retailers out there sell after market ones cheaper? |

I bought most of my new nuts and bolts from the local nut/bolt shop, they can match them in stainless, aluminium or even hardened steel for that matter, I have a rule of replacing bolts when rebuilding and have a preety good understanding with the bolt guy, I never buy genuine bolts for 5 times the cost of the same thing elsewhere, give them a try if you have one close...

are you using the orignal studs and nuts you mean? cause when have had issues on my 2 660 raptors but we replaced them with high tansile bolts and nuts but you will have to drill the sprocket hub out a bit in some case's

Unfortunatly I live in a remote area so it is rare that our local guy stocks anything I can use. I have to get everything ordered in through Yamaha Darwin.
Tuff as, I am using brand new factory original studs and nuts. I'll be ringing yamaha on Monday. With their track record they will probly say its my fault even though I used a torque wrench to their settings. |

hey
had the same problem with the shee, but it was a diff torque, never trusted the manual again even with the head nuts it seemed to be too much, just do it to what you know will work (if your mechanically minded)

One suggestion but its something you probably already know, depending on the type of tension wrench.
If you have not used your tension wrench for some time always put socket square in vice and make it click a few times at different tension settings just to make sure it is working. |

i hate to say it but just go to your local bolt supply shop up there (if you have a coventrys up there us them)and get the following
4x M10x35 bolts cad plated grade 8.8
4x M10 nyloc nuts
8x M10 hard faced flat washers
then use bolt ,flat washer sprocket,hub, flat washer and nyloc nut
just use the 16mm ring spanner on bolt end and 17mm ring spanner on nut end and do up as hard as you can with these two spanners only . you will not snap the bolt using this method and just do up untill your poop valve says stop.i have done this to my bike and had no issues ..i am a mechanical ennigner by trade so trust me  im good with my hands and not my spelling  if you can not get them i have them bolts at work P.M. me and i will send them to you.

How old is your wrench & when was it last calibrated. I used to have my own business calibrating & repairing tension wrenches. If its the micrometer (wind up) type, they need to be backed off to zero after each use. There is an internal spring which loses its tension if left tight. Hope this helps?

unlikly that any one will have AM bolt sets to fit the YFZ's they are different from the rest of the MX bikes.
I've always just done mine up with an allen key and a ring spanner. use loctite and you won't need to do them up to 40ft/lb

i done the same thing, went out and bought high tensile bolts with nyloc nuts. the sprocket aint going anywhere now

The wrench is only a few months old. I have used it for most of my rebuild. Yes I do wind it off after each use. Just out of curiosity what does it cost for recalibration?
To my surprise Yamaha has asked me send the bolts straight back. They are very interested to to see the bolts.
Thanks for all the posts guys. Think I will be chasing up the high tensile bolts next time I'm in the big smoke. |

Calibrating torque wrenches is just testing them at every 10ftlb incrament.
If nothing needs changing it takes 2 minutes.
So don't pay too much if it's ton out.
A simple way is to test it against everybody elses torque wrenches.
Just take the square drive out of one and put 2 together at 90degrees and push to see which one clicks first (ideally they'de be identical).
