I am looking at purchasing a quad as due family requirements my toy (4 wheel drive) has to go and be replaced by a family vehicle (its still going to be a 4wd).
As im new to sports quads i was chasing some information, views and opinions on what quad would be best suited for me;
- i'm 180cm and around 75kg
- the terrain i will be riding in is 50/50 sand/trail
- i'm not going to race it
- am i better to buy a used bike?
- i see alot of bikes (KTM/Polaris/Honda) are going rear IFS. Is it a huge improvement on rough trails?
Thanks |

Hi there, i presume you mean irs independant rear suspension , i have it on my grizzly for which i use on trail rides and sometimes in the dunes , and love the ride from the irs much more improvement over live axle , wish you all the best in your decision _________________ 2012 Can am Outlander Xt 1000cc

Hello xsvwallace , the type of bike is total up to you ..but i got the yamaha 700 raptor due to the point its got heaps of power and you can go real fast or you can just put around . if your like me you would have a bit of a spew it people go flying past you cos you got a big heavy lump of poop.. all the knowen brands have good bikes for your type of riding i say yamahas are good others say there crud. just dont get them cheap copy bikes the dont like been riden ... and on the other "Q" you asked i would say go a new bike cos lets face it they get the poop ringed out of them.no one putts around on a bike. it would be like you buying a worked V8 off a young guy and he says he hasnt given it S@#T yerrrr right .. but as long as your getting a quad GOOD ON YOU _________________ Sponsors ,Cullys Yamaha,Pirtek Malaga

If you can handle the finances buy new.
Me, I've only ever purchased 1 new quad in my life.
Too many low hour/low k quads out there with heaps of hop up parts going cheap. Take your time, drive around & kick some tyres and your sure to find a good quality second hand quad out there.
Look up 'Buy & Sell' in this forum.
P.S. 75kg! Get some beer & pies into you:P _________________ Don't close your eyes during the crash, you'll miss the best part |

Just in case i was misunderstood, i had previousely had a live axle utility quad and after the upgrade was made to the grizzly 660 with irs i was astounded with the difference, we all have our own preferences to which is our prefered bike,, but i also use my for day to day chores of towing heavy loads, uo to 1 ton behind mine,
Hop on a few bikes and compare apples with apples and really think hard about the things you want to do with your future bike, happy hunting and hope all goes well. _________________ 2012 Can am Outlander Xt 1000cc

Yeah i've been looking at whats for sale and think i'll go used.
Unfortunately i'm not in the position to drive around & kick some tyres as the nearest bikeshop is a 6 hour drive so i really need to do some reasearch.
I liked the idea of a raptor 700 but then i was told that if your abit light you'll have trouble hanging on.
and yes i get plently of beer & pies - my stomach is a black hole |

My wife has a 700 Raptor and she weighs in around the 55kg mark, your weight wont be an issue. _________________ 2012 Polaris RZR XP Turbo

Whereabouts are you? There's plenty of 'desert' in every state.
If you find a bike out of state, just let us forumers know, most of us would be happy to inspect a bike if it's close by. Some of the businesses (ie. Southern Quads, Adelaide Plant, etc.) charge, but it's minimal.
Your weights not an issue for a Raptor. I got a few anorexic mates who ride them Me, I beat anorexia years ago. _________________ Don't close your eyes during the crash, you'll miss the best part |

yes i'm located in the desert - QLD - the simpson desert is just down the road and i've got access to lots of sand.
Thanks for the offer to 'check a bike out' - might take that up when i find one and have the cash.
Yes i'm trying hard to beat my condition - this diet of beer, fried foods and whatever else i want to devour is just so hard |

I have a 700 raptor and I'm only 83kg, I do have a bit of an issue with sudden direction changes and blisters on my jands ( swear its from the raptor ) but I have learnt to ride the thing well and compete in enduro's as well as trail ride with a few mates.
Suits me fine with grunt and dosn't gussle fuel so I can trail ride on long rides as well
In the end it is up to you as you will be riding it, I always go on the theory of buying more grunt than you need, it is not like you have to use it.... Better than buying something small and outgrowing it in 6 months...
Good luck with whatever you choose... _________________ Andrew |

Have to admit that no other big bore quad sounds as good as the green ones, they are grouse when you hit them with a fistfull of throttle, have not heard youngy complain about his either... _________________ Andrew |

I have a mate that has a 700 and only thing he hates is the way he chews rear tyres up, hasn't had a problem at all and the resell value is still good... _________________ Andrew |

The KFX 700 does have a great power range, put a pipe on it twins are better, beef the front brakes up a little and away you go, the stigma of the Auto is slowly being a non issue, not as agile as the 700 raptor, but has grunt high and low, a heavy bike (230kg) I love it, mind you I would love to hop on a 700 raptor ... And all though this is my second quad, this is the best thing that I will ever own. _________________ 2005 KFX700

I'd be looking at an Outlaw 525 if you want something with IRS, they are light enough and have the right kind of power for your kind of riding up there. Any kind of sand riding sucks power out of a quad so go for something over 500cc if you can. I rode an Outlaw 525 across the Simpson a couple of months ago and I couldn't think of a better quad for the job, good fuel range and comfortable to spend all day on in the desert. _________________
