Has anyone had any dramas with the corrosion in the clutch cover?
I was reading on z400 central that in the states suzuki had a recall on 05 and 06 models.
You would think if they had a recall in the states they would have one here to.
Or is it that our markets so small that they don't give a "profanity removed". _________________ I am old and wise because i survived young and stupid |

| A friend of mine had his 06 model cover replaced under warranty, The coolant eats away the cover material till the coolant ends up in the oil. |

They replace the magnesium cover witn aluminum one .The coolant apparently reacts with the magnesium.
I think the pre 06 models had an ally cover . _________________ I am old and wise because i survived young and stupid |

Rang my dealer this morning,he said there is no recall listed and that there is obviously no prob then.I asked for a customer service number so he said he would ring them for me.Apparently they say they have had only one failure of the cover.I eventually got vin range from them and mine is in there .If any one here has an 05/06 ltz and want the vin range let me know and i will post em up.
How many of you guys have had prob's?
Hopefully i will be sending mine of to the dealers 2morrow ,he said he has to confirm it with suzuki before i take it in. _________________ I am old and wise because i survived young and stupid |

I'll take the vin numbers. My ltz is an 05 model and its the first time Ive heard of it. I guess the dealers don't want to help out, how unusual
I wonder if the kawi and artic cat 400's suffer from the same thing _________________ Ive heard that sound before and this is going to hurt |

The vin range for an 05 is jsaak47a*52100048 to jsaak47a*52122228
mine is a 06 model but the build is 9/05 so it has a different vin range
jsaak47a*62103479 to jsaak47a*62130240.
The asterisk was actualy a 6 in my vin.
Here is a copy of the recall in the US
- 1/1-
Dear Suzuki Owner:
American Suzuki's records indicate you are the current owner of a 2005 or 2006 Suzuki
LT-Z400 ATV.
Suzuki has received field reports on 2005 and 2006 model LT-Z400 ATVs regarding erosion of the
magnesium clutch cover in the sealing area adjacent to the water pump cavity. This erosion can affect
the sealing ability of the clutch cover and in extreme cases allow engine coolant to contaminate the oil.
While we have received reports of the erosion, very few cases of coolant seepage have occurred.
It is common that over time corrosion occurs in the cooling system of motor vehicles and periodic
maintenance such as flushing and cleaning is required. Starting with the 2005 models, the clutch cover
material for the LT-Z400 was changed from aluminum to magnesium. Suzuki engineers have determined
that the erosion found in the 2005 and 2006 model LT-Z400 clutch cover is not normal and is a result
of a chemical reaction between the magnesium alloy and the coolant. Suzuki has decided that the best
long term solution is to conduct a Customer Satisfaction Program and replace the clutch cover with
one constructed of aluminum. In addition to replacing the clutch cover, your dealer will replace the engine
oil, the oil filter and the coolant at no cost to you.
Contact your Suzuki dealer to schedule an appointment for the Customer Satisfaction Program service.
Your dealer will then order replacement parts and schedule a service appointment for your LT-Z400
ATV. Parts are currently available for your dealer to order.
During your pre-ride inspection, if there is no indication of engine oil contamination (oil is milky in color)
found and the engine coolant level is normal, it is OK to operate your ATV. If engine oil contamination
is found or coolant level is abnormal, please contact your Suzuki dealer to make an appointment for
this Customer Satisfaction Program service before operating your ATV.
If you do not reside near the dealer from whom you purchased your ATV, or you purchased your ATV
from a private party, you can contact the nearest authorized Suzuki dealer to schedule an appointment
for the service. You can obtain information about Suzuki dealers in your area by calling the toll-free dealer
locator telephone number of 800/828-7433.
To save yourself time and travel, do not bring your LT-Z400 to your Suzuki dealer until you have made
an appointment. Please be aware that no other conditions or service is covered by the Customer
Satisfaction Program. The cost of any additional service you ask your dealer to perform is your
responsibility.
If you have an additional question that is not addressed in this letter , please do not hesitate to contact
your Suzuki dealer or you may contact the American Suzuki Customer Service Department for assistance
using the direct Customer Service telephone line at 714-572-1490. You will need to have your Vehicle
Identification Number ready when calling.
We apologize for any inconvenience this action may cause, but we are certain you understand Suzuki's
interest in your satisfaction with your LT-Z400 ATV.
Sincerely,
American Suzuki Motor Corporation

This must have been my bike then.I was lucky i picked up on this problem from suzuki central.com and then went about checking my bike.Simple task lossening a few bolts and spinning the , i think pump , housing on the clutch cover , you can then see the corrosion - a green gunk -it all bolts back up no drama's -a 10 minute job for peace of mind.
.I was lucky i emailed aus-atv magazeine and barry and cohorts couldn't do enough to help - i had the national service manager look after me ,(after the dealer stuffed me around to no end ), ,it needed a new clutch cover, the old one was made from poor quality magnesium (apparently)hense the reaction with the coolant. , The recification has worked perfectly as i rechecked it 12 months later .
BUT- dont take your suzuki dealers word on this problem ,(i don't think they get much money for this work from suzuki )
, -they'll feed ya a cock and bull story , ask you whether the bikes been servied during warranty period etc etc etc - stand your ground with dealers - suzuki australia will fix this problem and if you don't have it fixed the corrosion will eat thru the case and oil and coolant will mix and the motor will go karput! |
