i have tryed to get info on what is req to make this happen about 1 year ago and the B#@CH on the other end of the phone was not interested in helping me one bit. she said the off road motor bike frames are built diffrent and are not suitable for road use and they req a diff like Quad said . the diff part is not the issue (but has to be fitted) its them trying to pass the frame and getting a enginners cretificate. i dont know how the frame is a issue for the frame on a quad is stronger than most bikes i have seen on the road. i will try again to see if i can get it to work next year. i have built a few of them trikes were you get a two wheeled bike and weld a 200b datsun or a vw diff on the back and then put the fiber class body on the back(all road legal). but the quads do handle a little off on the road.( nearly all of us have done it )

what did you do differently to try to get it regoed? did you have lights blinkers etc?

also what diff did you try? was it out of an ag bike or something?

from the info i was told buy the B@#CH if wouild have to be like a motor bike were you have all the indicators ,high beam low beam, brake lighrt, tail light and the speedo needs to be a mechancail type were it is cable driven so there is no chance of the battery going flat and the speedo dont work and has to has a hand brake to. and quiet muffler ,road tyers . she also said about a way that the bike can be locked ,again like how two wheeled bikes have steering locks.

Ditto! It certainly looks different from a standard Banshee front end. apart from the maier raptor copy plastics I mean.

Quad you also mentioned that you designed it for road registration. Apart from on pavement tyres and a sway bar, what are the road registration bits?

I can't see a Diff in the photos. Did you design and build a removable swingarm with a diff fitted to it? Or did you ride a different quad fitted with a diff?

Regards

If you are serious about this, speak to an engineer. and be prepared to pay for the priveledge.. I would not think that this would be an inexpensive excercise.

As for a diff, I would think that the front open/lockable diff from something like a Suzuki ag Quad would work okay (assuming it could handle the power)

I can see no reason why a speedo would need to be cable opperated as I cant think of a car that hasnt had an electronic speedo for years.

In some European countries (Spain for one) Quads can be registered for road use, there is a HP limit however (12 hp from memory) they also allow small cars and trucks (12 HP and 40 kph limited) to be driven without a licence. (do a google search on Ligier classic range.... or Micro cars Europe..)

in regards to Emissions, I would think that a registerable motorcycle engine would be the way to go.

good luck it is probably a bigger more expensive project then one would think, but it would be do able.

The Europeans have it made with the ability to be able to utilise their rides for both on and off road purposes. The mods required to do so looks awesome too. Makes you wonder though whether using the quad as a day to day piece of transport takes the excitement out of riding it on the dirt on the weekends.

Only in the Chrissy parade recently, Our club got permission for quads and dirt bikes, only prob is they got real hot so a couple of us asked if we could scoot down some side streets to get the air moving, must admit it was a buzz to be on the roads with 2500 peeps watching, and we didn't play up too much..

I think the Pomy limit is 20hp or 15kw. Thats why they sell a lot of 250's and 300's over there.
And those guys dont need diffs like we do.
They do conversions for around 500 pounds through an engineer.
Headlight design and spacing etc all comes into it, so obviously some quads are easier and cheaper than others.
try www.quad.tv and look for a copy of of Quad magazine April 2007.
There is a how to rego story on page 54.

Don't forget we need a diff.
I reckon the Outlaw IRS might be the place to start.

I have ridden down the road on a regoed quad, in vic you can get primary producer reg. Dealers sell farm quads with a blinker kit and a number plate. This covers the farmer to ride his quad on the road between his farms for work purposes and is cover by TAC insurance

we have a similar rego for qld farmers but it is restriced to within a certain distance from their property

haha maybe we could bend the laws so we could ride all over our towns!

we need to keep pushing this people.
if we keep on it we will get results.
we need to get signatures and letters typed up,
i think if we get a patition done and put it in every bike
shop around australia we will get so many signatures.

There is some call underway for international uniformity.
Basically so manufacturers do not have to fit different seat belts, indicators etc for different countries. For example any right hand drive Japanese car could then come directly to Australia and hit the road. Otherwise when manufacturers look at selling to a small Australian market... It all gets too hard.

If the international thing happens they could study the european accident statistics as well as damage to road pavements from non differential vehicles... and Wa-La.
Quads on the road in Australia.

Theoretically anyway, but don't hold your breath.
