 |
|
Ok, it's our first go at rebuiilding the old clunker.
We've pulled her down & she's got stuffed top & bottom bearings on the left side.
Seems that somehow water has come in from the stator where it had pooled & not the fault of my teenager. Still wouldn't recomend owning a 16 year old still. But I am warming to the simplicity of 2 strokes after pulling this one apart though.
So what do you 2-strokers recomend?
Do we get the old crank rebuilt, or buy a genuine, or buy aftermarket?
Yamaha will sell me a complete crank ready to bolt in for about $1000. Not sure if I am capable of rebuilding it or what it would cost to get done.
She has had a rebore before we got her. Local engine rebuilder said to bore her to 65mm.
What sort of piston kits do you recomend?
Wiseco & Pro-x don't seem that far apart in price on the domestic market from what I've seen.
What other options are there & what would you guys expect to pay?
Might be looking at a new stator as well.
What is the go there?
Where is the best place to get all these parts?
If anyone out there is a suplier don't hesitate to PM me with some recomendations & prices.
Don't be shy
I have a lot to learn here.
Thanks

your best of replacing the whole crank with a hot rods item, If your going for a staight forward rebuild stick with the standard stroke, standard rod crank.
Get your local engine shop to measure the bore of the cylinders and get them to supply the next size pistons and bore the cylinders to suit
As for your stator, the oly reason to upgrade it is to run higher wattage light or more electrical accessories, do you plan to do this? |

get a haynes manual and youll be right to bolt that sucker back together yourself no worries!
most crank rebuilders will only charge around $200 labour to rebuild your crank if you supply parts, so depending on what it needs it may be cheaper to do this than to buy a whole wiseco crank or similar.
for example you may find that the rods are still serviceable and it only needs big end bearings and mains.... if you shopped around you would be able to rebuild the crank for cheaper than a new wiseco one. also all the crank guys ive spoken to have said that a genuine yamaha crank rebuilt and trued will be a better item than an aftermarket one.
get wiseco pistons for it and make sure the machine shop knows to give them more bore clearance than cast pistons such as stock or pro-x.
if you want the name and number of a good crank guy pm me. _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |

not having a shot at you but why stick to yamaha crank ? a hotrod is rebuilable 100% where as the yam crank is a pain in the ass to work with
i say go the xtra few bucks and get a hotrod crank kit _________________ black covered in 5.7 powered oversize quad

well im no crank expert but just goin off what 3 different crank rebuilders have told me.
something about the yamaha cranks being properly hardened or something or rather...
also one says the pin being forged to the centre assembly is actually a blessing in disguise compared to the fully removable pin in the wisecos.
the only time a yamaha crank isnt fully rebuildable is when the pin is worn excessively, and one of the guys i spoke to says he has rebuilt one crank in particular for a RZ350 road racer upwards of 10 times without needing to replace the pin.
keep in mind though that im talking about genuine cranks which have rebuilt and trued, straight from the factory they need to be trued and nearly all of them are found to be between 3-4 degrees out of phase.
the same probably goes for the wisecos too its just that no-one has bothered to check! _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |

ive got a haynes manual for the RZ and its pretty good, never eyeballed a clymers though i have heard they are better.
about the only thing i didnt like in the haynes RZ manual was the PV adjustment explanation, but gammie61 doesnt have to worry about that! _________________ 2002 SE Banshee |

the centre web which the pins are in on a crank if one side is toasted you have to replace the entire centre web
yes your rebuilder is prob right with the original being stronger but keep in mind all single cyls have removable pins and they havent changed back to the forged type so mustnt be all that bad _________________ black covered in 5.7 powered oversize quad

It's been a big help.
