Jermiah Jone Seriously Injured, Spinal Surgery Scheduled for Monday
Jeremiah & Jamie Jones
Saturday at Unadilla
New Berlin, NY (7/30/06) - Jeremiah Jones headed into this weekend of racing with high hopes for a chance at the ATVA National Motocross Championship, but sadly, he was involved in a horrific crash in the first turn of the second Moto, which left him with a broken back and no feeling below the waist.
Jeremiah Jones was rushed to the Baptist Trauma Center in Cooperstown, NY, and it has been determined that his back in the T10-T12 region was damaged, which results in some spinal cord damage as well. As a result, Jeremiah will undergo surgery on Monday, July 31st at Noon to repair the damaged vertebrate and determine the extent of the damage to his spinal cord.
At this point, the probably of Jeremiah ever racing or even walking again are very grim, but not without hope. The Jones family are calling for our prayers for Jeremiah as it is right now his best chance for a miracle.

I know i've been walking around in daze all day I came in for my breaky and US MX results as I do every monday morn after a race over there. Very keen to see how LB and Chris B went and I read that JJ had his crash. I really hopy he will be ok. When I seen him storm through the feild at Budds from 16th to 1st it blew me away. He is one of the quickest guy ever to sit on an ATV _________________ Smitty |

Very sad indeed. no matter how good a rider ,it can happen to the very best of them. Im not sure if the pros in USA wear a Back protectors but I sure recommend them with and even a neck brace where possible.
.Prayers to you JJ for a succesfull recovery. _________________ Cheers

Yeh this really sucks. Has anyone else noticed how many other guys have been seriously injuring or killing themselves on quads in the last 1 and half years(not always their fault), it was seven at my last count including guys of all diciplines and classes.
Really sucks, why do you guys think its happening???? _________________ Mic

I think its just that you get thrown at speed and you have very little protection, like a roll cage .You can tangle up with the quad and it can be lethal ,similar can happen on a two wheeler . The weight of your head is 1 third of your body weight and with a Helmet even more. This unfortunatly leaves your neck very exposed to damage. _________________ Cheers

Yeh thats a good point, but, think about the width of the first corner of most of the tracks quads race on all over the world. Glenn Helen is the only track i can think of that has multiple lines through the first corner and te riders can avoid getting tangled like what happened to JJ. Maybe just making first corners a bit wider or something... maybe putting a big boom round the outside so there are two lines minimum to spread the quads out. Just little things like that would make a huge difference to the safety of riders. I think it would anyway. _________________ Mic

"profanity removed", what a pisser. Jeremiah is a fantastic guy and one of the best racers in the USA circuit. All we can do is hope and pray that he comes through the operation OK.

Here is a summary and update since his surgery. (Taken from ATVscene.com)
After really turning it up on the track with several WPSA and GNC wins in the month of July, the final weekend of the month did not go very well for Suzuki Yoshimura's Jeremiah Jones.
In a first turn collision during moto two at the recent Unadilla GNC, Jones found himself on the ground with a broken back. Doctors have determined that he has a displaced spinal cord between the T11 and T12 vertebrae. He has had no feeling below his waist since the accident on Sunday.
"Jeremiah has his head up. He is looking ahead and is not giving up. I doubt he will be giving up any time soon", said Ryan Cox, Jeremiah's mechanic. "No mater what ends up happening he wants to remain involved in the ATV racing industry."
Surgeons at Baptist Trauma Center in Cooperstown, NY fused three of Jeremiah's vertebrae together. The T12 vertebra was severely out of alignment and because of this doctors feel the chance of him walking again are slim. Jeremiah is currently recovering from the surgery and will be sent to a rehabilitation center in Atlanta next week.
Our hearts and prayers continue to be with Jeremiah and his family during this horrible time.
If you would like to send something to Jeremiah and his family use the address below:
811 William Simmons Rd
Bowling Green, KY 42101
Several people have asked where they can send donations to help him and his family financially. As soon as these details are in order we'll let you know.
While we wait to hear how one of the most respected, fastest and nicest persons in this sport is doing, we thought you might like to check out some photos of Jeremiah - past and present, as well as a special video tribute to the multi-champion and arguably best ATV racer of all time. _________________ (PeteW's missus)

I'm sure the medic's got there as soon as they could and i'm not sure about someone steeling his googles find that hard to beleive but it did take a few seconds for them to relize the JJ was still under his quad. I won't post the video link on here because I don't think it's a positive thing for our sport when we are trying to get rec reg and offical titles and so on _________________ Smitty |

Update on JJ
can still remember the crash as clear as day. I was as far outside as I could possibly go, and I was turning that corner several bike lengths behind Joe and someone hit me, and I don’t even know who hit me. I couldn’t see them out of the corner of my eye because the corner was so sharp. I ended up getting hit and thrown off the bike and it felt like that I was constantly getting hit like that I was in a train wreck, and I could never get away from it, and right at the end, I felt a sharp jolt of energy.
I never did get knocked out, and I felt the shock and energy, which was like someone hooked me up to the most powerful electric fence. I felt like I had 5 bikes hitting me all at once, and I just couldn’t get away. I was screaming to get the bike off of me because I couldn’t do anything about it because I couldn’t feel anything from my neck down, and when they got the bike off of me, I guess that I was blessed because God did give me some of my function back.
I had a really rough day yesterday because I had to go back into surgery, so they could realign three screws. They doctor said that the way the screws were aligned in my back that if they would loosen, there would have been a chance that my spinal cord would have started leaking, which wouldn’t have been good.
Also, my T-11 and T-12 vertebrate started to pull back away, so they wired and plated it. They pulled the vertebrate closer together this time, and the doctor talked as if it will mend itself together a whole lot faster and that area of my back will be really strong.
I am suppose to have another MRI on Monday and make sure everything is in alignment and hooked up right, and basically I hope from then that I will be able to go onto rehab. I have rehab setup in Atlanta, GA and Louisville, KY, and I have already been accepted to the one in Louisville. I have the flight and everything lined up to leave out of here on Tuesday, but they are still trying to get me into the one in Atlanta. If I am accepted, they could get me into there on Wednesday. They will come and pick me up in a Lear Jet and get me all hooked up and start me on rehab. I could be in rehab from 4 to 8 weeks, a year, or what ever it takes, but it should be good.
The Doctor basically told me that the situation that I am in right now is not as bad as originally expected. At the beginning, they thought my spinal cord was severed or torn in half, but when they went in for surgery, it wasn’t torn and only had a small little hole in it, and when they went back in there for my second surgery they ended up closing that incision on that hole, so it should be taken care of.
As far as getting my movement back, I have had some pressure points in my groin area, which is showing some promise, and all we can do now is wait for my swelling to go down in my back and spinal cord area to tell whether that I am going to get any kind of range of motion back in my hips or my knees. There is a possibility that I could get a range of motion back in my hips, it could go down into my knees and ankles, and there is a possibility that I could once again walk with the use of a walker. As of right now, I still don’t have any movement below my waist, and I can only feel some pressure in my groin area. From my waist up, I can feel cold and hot, I can move my arms, I am breathing fine, and all my vital signs are good.
I am just very blessed for what I have got because it could have been ten times worse because I could be sitting here right now with a ventilator on me, so I now have a second chance at life. I am looking at life in a different aspect now. I have a beautiful wife, son, and a big family behind me, and not only my immediate family, but also the entire ATV family. It is very grateful that everyone really cares about you as much as they do, and it is just an honor to know how much some respected me, and I hope that I was a good role model to everyone.
It is just a big family, and I have had so many friends get in touch me, and everyone is so behind me. I would be the same way to them if they were in my situation because I would do everything in my power to help anybody out. It is just the way that I am and was raised, and I am just grateful that I am surrounded by people that really care because I have met a lot of really caring people in my life.
I have worked so hard in this Industry to get to where I am at, and if there is anyway possible, I definitely want to stay involved with the Team. I don’t want to be known as a cripple and put up in a wheel chair for the rest of my life. I want to be known as somebody and be an inspiration to the racers and come back and work for Suzuki, so I still can be involved with the Team. I feel like that I am going to be a big contributor because I know what it takes, the determination, willpower, and focus to run out front. I know how to make bikes better and more equipped, and I am excited just to know that I will still be involved in my new role because Suzuki/Yoshimura is behind me 100%.
I was glad that I had the chance to watch television today because I was able to watch WPSA, and I told everyone that I could to watch that race today because it will probably be the last race they get to see me win. I was really proud of ESPN to put the tribute on there for me, and it really put my head up high to go out knowing how good that I became as a racer.
I have been racing for 13 years, and I have got to know some really great people, and I really appreciate all the support that I received from my family, friends, and even people that I never met. All your support and prayers are helping me get through, and I really appreciate it."

Thats really good news to see he is in good spirits and that he has been improving by the day. I saw the video of the crash, it was not nice at all. You can really see how he lucky he is to actually be alive. _________________ Mic

| It just goes to show how vulnerable we all are to serious injury out on a racetrack. I wish JJ a speedy recovery, and with his passion and determination I believe he'll be just as fast in recovery as he was on a racetrack. |

| I also have watched the video, and its sickening to say the least. JJ is a very lucky man to be alive. My daughter broke her tail bone a few weeks ago, and hearing about JJ made me shudder knowing just how lucky Katy was. She will now wear a tail bone protector when she is racing her quad.Yeah Chris Brenton did do well in the states, we are all proud him here in WA. He won his first race here when he got back (as Always) jet lag and all. |
