Hey guys.
I dumped the oil and filter in my YFZ today and found
it had a little fuel floating on top of it. I think it is just
a bit of blow by from fuel passing the rings, as this apparently happens anyway and my 450 is in need of a good bore out and re-sleeve. But i just thought i would run it by you guys to see what you think.

What year is it??
How much & how hard has it been ridden???
How often does it get changed???
I held off on a 450 as I heard from alot of race guys they do oil every 5hrs and oil/ filter every 10hrs. Some I'm told even more frequent.
(Not to mention I'm a trail hack & couldnt bring myself to spend that and not get reverse!!!!!)   
Apparently they dont have a very big oil capacity so it goes through the motor alot of times in no time at all!!!!
As I dont own own one its only "hearsay" so you can correct me by all means if this is not the case.
If you get alot of fuming in the top end the valve-train colud be shot too!!
I'm told they also need the valve clearances done quite regularly.
Good luck with what you choose when the time comes- but hey if its guna be apart on the bench anyway do your homework and find someone to 'hot' it up a little.

I'd have a good look at this fuel that came out with the oil Riz.
Any raw fuel would probably mix with the oil, while draining even.
If you rode it to where you drained it then definitely so.
Try mixing a bit more of what ever fuel you run with the old oil and see if it "floats on top".
If you had a carby needle valve problem filling the cylinder with raw fuel when turned off and bypassing the rings as it sat in the shed then it would have started rich and ugly after your oil change.
I hope it is not water / coolant you saw.
Keep a keen eye on all your fluid levels.

I too doubt that it would be fuel if it was floating in the oil. How old is your engine (in hours), if its under 100 hours you will likely only need a new piston and rings unless you barrel is scored as the nicosil coating on the bore should still be OK.

Well yeah that's what I thought too but my local bike shop mechanic said that the fuel would float on top of the oil.
I didn't think so, so that's why I asked you guys. But yeah I later decided to see what would happen if I mixed some more fuel with the oil out of the bike and sure enough the majority mixed, but some of it sat on top of the oil. So I'm kinda lost!?!?!
But as for the nicosil coating it needs to be redone as it is a little out of shape and slightly oversized. The quad had a complete overhaul 11 hours of riding ago, but with the bore being a bit out I think it might be wearing the piston and rings more heavily. I intend to rip its head off at between 15-20 hours riding and getting the bore redone and new piston rings and gaskets. Also I'm hoping Len will be able to do the oil mod for me.
Oh and one last thing, the mechanic who rebuilt my bike had a look at the valves and said that they wouldn't have more than 25 hours on them. I have kept the clearences to spec but they probably need to be redone. I do the oil and filter every 5 hours and clearences at 10 hours. Does this sound right or too little maintenance?

Any maintanance is good maintanance, Sounds like you have a plan and are on the ball.
I would dought if fuel would float to the top after being mixed within the motor, but thats just my expierience, most of the time for me it has been something else..

Yeah I'm almost certain it isn't fuel floating in it.
I've just got the shits with the moto shop for telling me crap. But the bike runs fine so I'm not to concerned at the moment.
