 |
|
You guys might have read this off ATV Riders forums but I thought I'd post it here for those of you who haven't.
Aprillia already has such an engine. It's for their new RXV enduro bike and SXV supermoto bike. Comes in both 450cc and 550cc versions. I've yet to see any facts about HP, but the 450 version is suppose to put out 55hp. I'm not inclined to doubt that since the engineers from that part of the world are known for making dead serious HP in similar sized engines.
I have no reason to think Aprillia plans to build a quad. But wouldn't it be cool if somehow this V-Twin 450 made it into Can-Am's currently under development, suppose-to-be-race-ready 450 sport quad?? Extremely unlikely? Sure but it's still fun to imagine. I'm sure penty of Yamahondkawzuki loyalists would bite their tongue and buy a Can-Am (Bombardier's new, old name) if it had a 55 hp twin. But what's MORE realistic is that the RXV/SXV bikes will prove that small displacement multi cylinder engines can work in high performance off-road applications. Applications where engine weight and size can only get so big before singles just make more sense. THAT might encourage the Big Four to put their R&D to work on something new and innovative.
Why the hell can't Honda build an engine like this and put it in a sport quad? Maybe make a 450 and a 550 or 650. I know they could if they wanted to. Sometimes they are conservative to a fault about what products to bring to the public. Yamaha could (and maybe would) do it though. Keeping costs down would be tough. But even if they cost $1000-1500 more than a single I bet they'd still sell tons of them. _________________ Mic

| Apparently the 550 puts out around 70hp at the wheel in the SVX so it shouldn't be too hard to get 55 - 60 from the 450. In the last issue of AMCN they had a photo of a new 450 parallel twin 4 stroke from Yamaha for jetski's that supposedly makes 80hp. Then again Yamaha said the new R6 revved to 17000 rpm when it has been proven that its actually only 16000 so you have to take their claims with a grain of salt. Still, even if its 20% out that is 64hp which costs a lot to get out of a single. |

A mate of mine is getting an SVX550 supermoto bike and has said I can have a test ride so I'll let you all know what the good old seat dyno tells me.
Ever since I heard about the Aprillia 450/550 twin I've been thinking about how to get one to put in a quad frame, pity they are about $17k.
Any of the Jap Manufacturers could build a twin of some description. Yamaha could easily develop a 500 paralell twin from their current technology as could Honda build a V twin out of theirs.
Oh and Yogie the Aprillia twin is a PERFORMANCE engine not a tractor motor, no comparison. _________________

It would be awsum if I could get one to put in a quad chassis. Maybe someone will send theirs down the road on its side in the future and I can get the engine out of that for a test dummy. Owell. Costs nothing to dream... _________________ Mic

Suzuki also make a bike called the SV650 which is good for about 85hp. Don't know how the motor would take jumping but would make one hell of a flat track beast. It even fits within the MA regs of twin <700cc +5%. |

I think the Aprillia's will be a little more robust than to get written off after a slide down the road.
SV motor would be good cept for the fact that they are too heavy. _________________

Im not really going into any major details. Just sharing some crazy ideas... lol. For jumping it might be a bit heavy but it could be good for dirt track. _________________ Mic

The LT-R only shares the same head and barrel design of the RMZ the bottom end is more like a DRZ it looks a little over engineered if anything. I think it's a lot stronger than the YFZ or the TRX in the bottom end but only time will tell _________________ Smitty |
