I'm thinkin of importing an '08 LTR450 from america, anyone else imported a quad before. Wantin to know a few of the details. I'll be calling up the states this week or next. With the ozzy dollar at the moment i'm thinkin there could be a huge saving.

Forget it. A guy here did it with a raptor. Bought it before he left th states & had it shipped. Was told 3 months. Took 5 months & by the time he got it & paid for all of the duties & taxes it was not far off the cost of a new 1 here. Add to that he has no warranty & I cant see it being worth it."
If you could bring it in as hand luggage it would be a different story!

Yeah mate it can sometimes end up being way to much hastle and as expensive, you would need to get the price of the QUAD and then work out how much for shipping, then add 10-15 % of those two totals and that is roughly what your import fees and GST will be, the only way it really works out worth doing is if you bring in a container load, as Losty said it can also take along time, send me a PM or get in contact with me as i might be able to help if you really want to do it, hope this helps.

I have looked into importing a car from the states. It was only going to be worth it is if the value of the car in the states was atleast a 5th of the price of a car out here.
Also I looked at getting a second hand quad from the states. Unless you buy a quad in the same city as the shipping companies depot, you will need to pay to transport the quad. Transport costs in the USA goes up when crossing state borders, trucks going across state borders have to be registered to travel in each state they enter. For example if Australia had the same system a truck going from Brisbane to Melbourne would have to have 3 rego's one for each state.

Ive imported bikes to both NZ and Australia from the USA .
If u know what u r doing its way cheaper.
U need to have a cheap way of freighting it, eg use someone elses container or the back of a ute or truck that is in a container.
U also need to get approval to import from DOTARS prior to importing the bike. Should take about 21 days on ship then customs clearance here etc.
I would actually suggest u buy one out of NZ and fly it here. Thats what I did and saved about 3k per bike. And yes I paid gst as well. With the NZ dollar against the AUD you save even more.
I have a mate with an order out of the usa at the moment for 2 x yfz's and 2 x ltr450's going direct to NZ. He reckons each bike will owe him 4k less than buying locally.
The other idea would be to get together with some mates and go to a country dealer somewhere in aust and get a "group deal" . Country dealers seem to be more keen to do deals. City dealers dont think they need to. People like Geoff Udy Yamaha (can get suzuki product also) are good to deal with , and do "real deals" . Im sure there are many more out there as well.

Cheers fellas, i c theres a bit more to it then first thought. i'll do a bit of investigating. I've heard bout the NZ idea off someone else before, could be worth thinkin bout.
