 |
|
Well the story goes, I own a 2004 YFZ450 and have had it for a couple of months. In this time it has had a very costly full engine rebuild (top and bottom end) because the conrod was starting to bend. We found this out when we pulled the top off it to just check its condition. So anyway after it was fully rebuilt, my local motorcycle dealership tells me that it will need a new piston and rings every 20 hours riding i do. I was just wondering what your opinions on this are, and weather you think 20 hours is the right time to rebuild it. Any help on this would be appreciated.
Thanx,
Ryan _________________ <RIZ> |

Ok Thanks mate, I will follow that up. I've seen their turbocharged raptor in ATV Action magazine. Are they expensive to have things done there?

Hi Ryan,
20 Hours is the Factory book recommendation for the Yamaha and Honda ,you can get more hours it just depends on how you service ,modify and ride your quad.
The 04 -05 YFZ have weaker Rods than 06-07 and no oil squirter like 07 so it is fairly common for the Rod to fail .Oil squirter mod helps but it is still limited to rod strength, some last fine and some just don't .Give me a call If I can help more. _________________ Cheers

okay, thats what I feared. When I bought this quad I didn't know how much the maintainance cost was. I am still at school and have no way of paying for it so selling it is probably my only option. Anyway thank you for your input Len, it is much appreciated.
Thanks,

No Worries Ryan, these things can cost u plenty , in any brand ! Mate its luck of the draw .I had an 04 ,put 13:1 piston,Port,Vortex and raced the thing for 2 years ,all great.I sold it then it let go in a big way and cost the guy $5000 and I felt really bad ! Since then I found out it is very Common fault . If I wanted a Yamy I would only consider an 07 knowing what I now know! However I like Honda better
You could write a letter to Yamaha Australia with a chance of some assistance based on its commonality and that your quad is stock. _________________ Cheers

What's a new motor installed cost? $5k repair bill sounds like alot.
Anyway, I have a mostly stock '04, serviced regularly including valves and so far no problems. I think alot of problems occur on race, neglected or abused bikes. _________________ Don't close your eyes during the crash, you'll miss the best part |

Hey Riz do you know the quads history before you bought it was it a racer, trailer or duner.Every 20 hrs sounds a bit radical. Go for a ride weekend and you have to do a rebuild.?Who told you you have to have a rebuild ,? was it the dealer who rebuilt it.?All sounds a bit sus to me. _________________ I am old and wise because i survived young and stupid |

Well as for the history of the quad, I'm not sure, but it apparently has had 2 previous owners and neither of them raced. And yes it was a dealer that told me that it had to be rebuilt every 20 hours. _________________ <RIZ> |

neglect and abuse is usually what kills Yam motors, having said that like Len said the 07's are a lot stroger and more relaible than the 04's, my 04 is still going plenty strong on a 12.5:1 JE piston with easily 50-60 hrs on it and showing no signs on needing a rebuild. with the right treatment you can make any engine last longer than the factory say the rebuild intervals are. _________________

Sorry to scare you Ryan ! Now its a fresh motor it should run fine ! Just enjoy it man, maintain it and when it is due for a new piston then maybe do the oil mod whilst the barrel is off ,if you are concerned . _________________ Cheers
