 |

Hey am looking at a 02 or 03 model Gas Gas Wild 450.
Have not heard much about them, does any one know anything about them?
I know Gas Gas has a good name in trials bikes and now dirt bikes also but cant find much info on quads.
How are they power wise compared to a TRX honda or the like?
Any major probs that people know of?
I believe it's fuel injected but not 100% sure.
Any info would be helpful.
Cheers,
Tazz |

Hey bought an 03 model a few weeks ago.
Fuel injected, ohlins shocks, wide A-Arms from factory.
Surely someone out there knows something, any info would be great.
Cheers,

So far great....
Starts 1st press of the button everytime.
Power wise, it seems fine, but i guess it depends on what your after.
Has less power, or at least less agressive power than a mates new yam 450, but goes fine.
Seems to go very well, just doesnt come on with the savage hit that some really love.
Did I say wide...
The standard front arms are fat as, and would be at least 5 or 6 inches wider than other mates with Jap quads.
Is extremely stable on fast dirt corners, way more stable than friends, but the steering is very heavy compared to other quads, something i'm going to look into.
May try and narrow it a little as i think it may be too wide for some of the tight back track's we get into @ stockton, and was often wider than the already made tight steep dune tracks, meaning it actually had to push a new track in the sand rather than running the existing one .
But so far really happy with it, a few lil things to look at (like narrowing it slightly and why the steering is so heavy) but other than than seems like a great quad, and is definatley different.....

"but the steering is very heavy compared to other quads, something i'm going to look into"
I seem to remember that their is a front geometry mod for the GasGas quad. If I remember right the caster is set for Euro road registered quads and it makes it very heavy.........Call Phil at Dandenong MC, he is a dealer and has a Wild300; I'm sure he knows what the deal is.

there is a simple fix that helped the heavy steering from standard, I think i recall it involving inserting a thin flat washer at the top steering stem mount as it was overly tight and binding. There was a pretty good non-factory website for them which owners posted to. _________________ Proud Member of QuadridersSA

Thanks for all the comments on the steering....
The Caster could well be it, I dont think its the steering stem as the steering isnt heavy when stationary, only once your riding, but will definately have a look at that too.
And maybe the tyres to, will start by talking to the guy at Dandenong MC tho, as I was thinking it could be something to do with wheel alignment issue.
Thanks for the help.

The steering is heavy due to excessive castor. I have seen blokes address this on Gas Gas 300s by the use of washers to space the top A-ARMS forward, which moves the top ball joint forward thus reducing the castor. Cheap fix.
The width in the front could possibly be addressed by having deeper offset front rims. The riders in the states use 4-1 offset rims in order to run the widest possible A-ARMS. This reduces bump steer and the scrub radius all in one, and in your case will reduce the overall front width to about 48inches. _________________ State governments give us REC rego + area to ride ATVs legaly! Yeah 4-1 rims will help the track width and should lighten the steering a bit too.
Lowering the front ride height and raising the back will also have a slight effect on castor (saying that without seeing if the back end is sagged out too far).
I found going to 21 inch RAZR 2's on my TRX450 (22's standard) gave lighter steering probably because it drops the front half an inch (decreases castor) and mainly because you just run of the skinny centre ridge of the tread most of the time.
Don't try to get rid of too much castor. Lot's of castor is good for steering self centring and high speed stability. While you will have to push the bars harder in corners it will also improve cornering stability (another reason it would feel more stable than your mates Jap quad). _________________ Can-Am X Team

6 degrees positive caster is good all round for quick steering and high speed stability, check tyre pressures are at least 4-6 LBs if running standard radials . _________________ Cheers
