I have had a TRX300 for the last 20yrs and can hardly fault it for reliability and ruggedness. However, just like me, bits are getting a little tired and some are even falling off! Time for a new machine!
I only use the quad for general farm work and the little 300 has enough power for what I require but the smallest these days is a 420 cc engine. The underside of the TRX has taken a battering over the years from rocks and logs so I have had to add additional bump plates. Same applies to the foot rests. I see the Outlander L is 80mm higher than the TRX so that is a distinct advantage.
However, the Outlander has a 2 range transmission and you have to stop prior to changing, whereas the Honda has 5 speeds on a single range. Pro's and Cons on this????
Have any of our members had experience with these 2 machines? Or even just with the Outlander L with regards to reliability, spares, ruggedness???
Stability on steep slippery country????
Any other comments???

Considering the serious lack of response to my post....only one Pm (Thank you Barney) I have gone ahead and ordered an Outlander L450 for delivery this week.
So, maybe within the next couple of weeks I will be able to give a genuine comparison between the 2 machines.
Reliability and longevity may take a little longer! Spare parts???? Well, I do hope that I will not be needing them for a while either! |

just saw this post... and I don't get it...
you've had a Honda for 20 odd years and its been uber reliable, so you replace it with another brand, NOT another Honda, why?
(I have an ES350 Honda that has been similarly indestructible) |

Thanks for the reply "wa5".
The major problem with the Honda is the low ground clearance...I have had to add front & underside bash plates to the m/c but I now note the tubular chassis is well dented again. The Can Am has 75mm more clearance!
I took delivery of the Can Am yesterday. Already I can see that the ride is better than the old TRX and I'm more relaxed with not having to worry about hitting high rocks! I do admit I may not stay relaxed if it lets me down mechanically/electrically!!!! Maybe I'll live to regret my decision???
The Can Am's have a good reputation is the USA! I think it all depends on who you ask! Just like the old Holden vs Ford arguments!!!!! The Can Am forum members swear by their machines. |

First report on the Outlander L450.
First the positive comments....
1. The ride is much better on the L450 and the increased ground clearance is a definite plus.
2. The higher load carrying capacity will be handy. I often carry a 30kg calf on the front rack and this is right on max. cap. for the Honda.
Now the negative....
1. Cannot change into/out of 4WD "on the go". (according to the manual)
2. Steel luggage racks have openings in the top end and drain holes placed at 3/9 o'clock in the bottom of the tube? Cannot help but get filled with water/mud!
3. The most serious problem! No rear mud flaps fitted. Consequently the mud is carried up on the rear wheels and thrown onto the top of the rear guards and the riders back. I can fit some, but really I shouldn't have to on a machine that surely is designed for the most arduous conditions!
I do sincerely hope the designers have more thought into the rest of the machine! |
