Hi,

I'm new to the site and seeking some ideas. I've got a 650 can am xt overlander and am trying to figure out how I can carry it on the back of my ute and still tow my camper trailer. The utes got a campbox built into it so takes up 1 metre of the tray plus the two spare tyres sit on the back of the camp box. I'm looking at putting in a false floor ie drop the sides of the ute and the false floor lugs into four holes cut into the tray to give the overhang on the sides and rear in which to fit the quad. My trays only 1900 wide and the extension needs to be 15 cm either side and 35 cm at the rear to accommodate the quad. The other alternative is to take the camp box off, put on a new tray which would be 30 cm wider, making it 2100 wide. Trouble is I reckon the cab would look a bit dicky with a tray sitting behind that much wider. The cab being 1900 wide. Has else been faced with the same issues and come up with a better solution?

cheers Rolls eyes

Any indication of the sort of roads/tracks you want to haul all this?

Yep, My camp-box fully laden with the tyres on the back would weigh around 250-300 kg. The quad has a dry weight of 325 kgs plus fuel (37 litres) and a spare jerry can. The types of tracks I'm talking about are the Gibb River Road and the Gun Barrel Hwy (new one, note the old one). Last year did the Cape and will probably head back up that way next year. laughing

as above pending roads and what not tho its only 100mm wider a side. This wont look to bad and have seen it before tho the problem is that its more than likely it will be wider than the mirrors. This will deem the car un-roadworthy instantly

a bolt on/off option may be the way to go so its not a permanent fixture however you still have the same issues of width unless you keep it to the same width of the car and allow a touch of over hang each side.

This is my setup to maintain maximum storage in the rear it works well have a 12v winch mounted to the front of ramps and just winch bike up. The whole setup is removable so I can still use the ute for other jobs...

Sorry for the delay in posting back. The ramp is held in place by 4 turn buckles which attach to the four tie points mounted in the rear of the Ranger. As for the frame its just 30 x 30 steel tube with 4 legs which are tied together on each side only by a 30 x 30 angle I then had two checker plate running boards bent up to suit the width of the tyres. I have a 12v winch which is mounted to the front of the frame this is used for loading only as unloading is manageable with two people. The bike is a neat fit between the sports bar of the ranger I then use one tie down from front bumper around sports bar and then one from each nerf bar to the tie points at the rear of the ranger again. If you have any more questions would be happy to answer and next time the bike goes up I will take some more pics to better explain what I have just said. That is if it ever rains again here in WA....

Cheers Regan
