my neighbour and me are thinking of building these racks for quads to fit onto utes. but just thought i would see how much of a market there would be out there.
check out the pic and let me know if you reckon it would be worth while. they would be customised to suit individual needs of course.
they can be galvinised alliminum painted or powdercoated to what ever colour you want i suppose... any other thoughts ?

My only thought is that these would suit those big type american utes or "pick ups" as they are a lot wider than our aussie utes. And to which there is a lot more of on our roads. I suppose iot wouldnt hurt to make one to suit our utes and give it thourgh testing. This is not a critisism, and I hope its not taken as one, but you'll never know till you give it ago. Keep us informed, on your progress. _________________ 2005 KFX700

They look realy good and well built. I would check with the RTA if you are allowed to have that much over hang though. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

the thought was to make them suit the aussie utes for one quad and if legal with the over hang situation make them for 2 quads. my need for one is as simple as i have a 6" widened raptor and i also tow a camper trailer around the raptor wont fit on the crewman, or any other well back ute for that matter
they would be removable and can be put onto box trailers to increase the useable space there too.
thanks for the feedback _________________ getting your quad around just got a whole lot easier www.ozcustomquadcarriers.com.au |

| Maybe make them so the quads go across from the side. That would be easier to unload if you have a trailer on. |

They SHOULD be legal up to 2.5 mts, + with extended/mirrors that can see back past the edges. _________________ Cheers-Redted. 04 Raptor |

having the quads sideways is good tho wouldnt it screw with the air flow?
(depending on what speed your doing)
could bend plastics! (maybe)
just my thought! |

i should have the first made within 3 weeks allowing for appathy and outright laziness then i intend playing around with it a little to see what works best.
thanks for all the comments and thoughts i hope to be able to make them for around $800 each as a basic model. they are about US$ 1400 in the states so $800 seems to be a bargain.
But would anyone buy one? _________________ getting your quad around just got a whole lot easier www.ozcustomquadcarriers.com.au |

Everything your about to read you alrady know but, I'll say it anyway, and again not any critism here.....
would anyone buy one...?? yeah, they would, But even though $800 is cheap (too cheap in my veiw) you will have to have the unit looking as good as it WILL be strong if you know what I mean. Not forgetting that it will supporting a (on average) $12000 bike. Another thing I would look at doing is if your retailing these at your price, And after you intial protyping and designs Look around for a local engineer, and get him to look over it and make sure all your bracings are in the right spots, wont cost much for this, and will give you and there-fore the buyer some peace of mind and get your finish product looking smick. If you were to go the powdercoating route, can get it coloured matched to suit most GMH, Ford colours... Dont be afraid to let the quad mag borrow one for a test... free advertising RE:plug. The biggest problem you will face will not be making or design ing it but marketing your product will be a constant nightmare (having horrible flashbacks here LOL) But certainly doeable, get onto petew he might be able to give you a few tips, I can give you more info on that if you like further down the track.
One thing I just thought about wil the $800 include a ally ramps ?? if so Still too cheap. I know some might be thinking that I'm trying sound negative here but I'm not, just trying ask any question or thoughts that might have been thought of.
I think there is market here for them especially for the aussie utes, very marketable product in my view. Good luck. _________________ 2005 KFX700

any wider then the car or towing vehicle must have clearance lights by rta also if you looking to law as same as tralers being wider then the car has to have em a car does not require as headlights and tail ights are the full car width _________________ black covered in 5.7 powered oversize quad

| making the quads load side ways would suit better as it wouldnt have to be as wide but would use full length of the ute |

great idea. if you sideways load you could extend it over the tailgate perhaps if you can drive with it down. It would be fantastic for those with dual cab 4x4s like rodeos etc as its difficult even loading one quad in there, near impossible if its widened. _________________ Proud Member of QuadridersSA

I have a 7x4 trailer and I would like to have one to fit inside/on top of the trailer for 2 quads, this will save me selling this trailer and buying a new trailer to suit. keep in mind a new trailer is around $1500 to $2000 with brakes, cages etc. depending what size you need - so for the trailer attachement the price around $500 to $800 sounds OK to me
But how would you get them down to Melbourne? |

a little more research has been done and yes they are legal with clearance lights ( that would plug into the existing 7 pin plug for the trailer say) the RTA requirement is no vehicle can be more than 2.5 metres wide and the overhang no more than about 3.5metres or 60% of the wheelbase whichever is the lesser. the first will? should be done by the end of this week and will be taken to oran park and other venues around sydney for people to see. it will be built for a holden crewman another will be built for a holden ute ( late model). pics will be posted when complete.
Thanx

ps the trailer model will proberly come in KIT form and will be a bolt together arrangement with stainless hardware and ny-lock nuts so they dont rattle loose. this kit form will aid in shipping to places outside sydney _________________ getting your quad around just got a whole lot easier www.ozcustomquadcarriers.com.au |
