 |
|
Hi folks, just thought I would run a thread on my new project. Fitting a Yamaha TT600 motor into an Polaris 450 outlaw. Why bother, well I picked up a frame cheap from auction minus engine and I was looking for a new project to keep myself entertained, as I already have a CF Moto 500 and an Adly XCE600 I was after something with a bit of mumbo to play around with and experiment on. From experience posting these projects brings forth a whole host of ideas and experience so any comments are more than welcome.
The following are photos of my last project which has now been sold and headed east, now to be seen racing at Kyneton in Victoria.
Vehicle is a hybrid of Edge buggies Piranha/Barracuda with a Honda Blackbird 1100 pushing it along.

Now down to the project itself. Polaris frame stripped, engine out of the Yamaha and mock up done. The 600 is an electric start so that negates a few issues. Next to line things up properly and see how much actual room I have, already because of the height, major mods will have to be done for the fuel tank, maybe just keep it as a cover as it holds several mounting points such as for the seat and fairing.

Personally I would gut the fuel tank - maybe put the air cleaner etc up in there if there is room so you have somewhere to put a fuel tank (under he seat?) My next suggestion would be a large blackboard in the corner with every swear word and phrase that you can think of so that when things don't go right you can swear long and swear well. Good luck and will follow with interest _________________ Tremble with fear - I've had an idea |

When you get stumped by something just shut the shed and walk away.
Think about it overnight and then try again.
Will save you a lot of stress.
Both my hybrids have there fuel tank under the seat. |

Hi Dodgy, Dangerman, yep, have cut the base out of the fuel tank as the heads come up over the top chassis rail so no way was the tank ever going to fit back on. Have posted a pic with the carbs on, thought of doing away with the aircleaner and just putting on some K&N pods as there's no room when the seat goes back on. As to the fuel tank I was looking at doing a main tank with pump and using a header tank for the gravity feed into the carbs or option two making a small tank to fit inside the old tank. Also the motor is a dry sump affair so I have to also fit in the oiler tank somewhere, was thinking of putting that above the starter motor as have a bit of spare room in there .
Dangerman how did you fit your fuel tank under the seat and what size did you end up with litre wise.
Cheers

not the best angles but you get the idea,
works a treat. both my motors are injected so run a high fuel pressure but im sure you could adapt a low pressure pump as needed.
made out of 3mm alloy with a piece of 5mm on the bot to stop rocks etc and for the fuel pump i welded a extra piece of plate just a bit bigger then the pump size so i could tap threads into the tank and bolt the pump on.
cheap simple and effective.
my yellow bike holds about 15lts from memory. |

Dangerman the extra 15(?) kg out the back hasn't affected the rear suspension setup or overall balance. I only ask because I once had a trx300 with a car battery in the rear toolbox and had to beef the rear shock
Rattler I am following with interest Looked at putting a yammie v twinn shaft drive into a trx utility quad but my budget and ability at the time couldn't get past where you're at _________________ Tremble with fear - I've had an idea |

rear suspension um its low any way which helps when at speed.
balance? 170 hp it does wheelies all day long regardless of the fuel at the back |

170hp , what did you put in, a hyabusha, that's some serious HP. A 15lt tank would get you what?, about 40km, no wonder you've got the Dangerman moniker . Thanks for the pics mate I can see exactly what you mean, for some reason I was thinking further under the seat and out there the shock wouldn't let it rebound up that high would it.
Haven't been able to do anything on mine for a while as had to gear up for a race weekend and that takes me a couple of weeks plus building a bash plate for my Adly and that involves machining and welding up new mount points for the plate. I did get to go out and sit and look at it for a while last night and contemplate the top motor mount , my age I do a lot of contemplating.
Dodgy, that would be an interesting project, I would like to see that. |

I would like to see it too I got the road bike as part of another deal at $200 agreed value to put in the Honda but after trying to work out where to put the fuel (wish I'd thought of dangermans idea) and realising the yammie was too good to wreck so I sold it for 500 and beefed up the carb and exhaust on the trx I probably have the ability now just not the time or cash _________________ Tremble with fear - I've had an idea |

I can see you getting that range pretty easy. I mean the zx10 engine would be built to run pretty efficiently and it's not like there is any way in hell that you could hold it flat out for 125km in any normal off road riding
Maybe Lake Eyre on a nice day or something _________________ Can-Am X Team

yea Bullet, general riding is all below about 1/3 - half throttle
you cant hold it flat out in any gear at any speed for more then about 3 seconds. it hits the limiter dam fast, and if you hit it in 6th your in trouble. |

Was interested in the comparison as the buggy had a 15ltr tank and was only able to get about 40k, it weighed in at 430kilo, but was WOT all the time . So that now at least gives me something to go on. |
