I have a question for all the people out there that buy from oversees, why do you do it when for most of the parts there are official distributors in Australia?
There is obviously the price point but when other things come into play like warranty or repair what do you do then?

Myself and other dealers get countless calls from People asking do you have this replacement part or can you warrant this or fit these tyres but they have bought from the US, what do you expect us to do?

If people would support the local distributors and help them grow prices will drop and freight will go down, if you support the US distributors it's going to make it harder for us all.

What happens if the dollar drops again or the US companies change there freight deals then everyone will instantly expect the Australian distributors to have what they want!

Start supporting the Australian distributors is all I'm saying.

Yogie on the shock the price is usa retail plus freight and gst and better if possible, I'll send you a proper quite this week once i here from Elka on the freight price.

As for why we can't sell for the same as the US.
Lots of the big online shops in the usa sell to the retailer at wholesale prices so buy the time we import and pay freight, tax and duty which we as legit Bussiness can't avoid its a bit hard to match the prices from the usa.
If everyone stuck to rec retails and got charged the same freight price there would be no way that the usa guys could match our prices.

Also as we buy direct from the manufacturers they sell in bulk and normally ship locally within the usa most of the time so they dont have the same door to door freight deals as the big international sellers do so when we buy the part and get it shipped over we are instantly behind because of the higher shipping prices. The only way to compete on shipping is to outlay heaps of cash and buy container loads. But then we face the problem of the retails dosent want to wait. I hold allot of stock but what's the point if people don't buy? If I was to match the same price as the US sellers i would make no money and this is a Bussiness not a charity service.

I purchased a gasket kit the other day.
I asked two local bike shops. first on was $136
Second was $125 both for the same brand kit.
I goggled the kit and found a seller in japan including
postage for $56

You do the math on which gasket kit i purchased.
This was for a very comon 2 wheeled honda.

I understand your trying to make money.
But the consumer wont pay double very often for the same
product.
Maybe abuse your suppliers not us.
We have to work hard for our money, and with the invention of
google and ebay, its time for you to find a better way.
If we can buy goods at 50% off. including freight.
Then where are you going wrong?

dangerman4 has hit the nail on the head. You need to take it up with the suppliers.

The old models they worked with were great until international retailing became easy with the internet. The suppliers need to change their prices with exchange rates (or sell to you in USD) so that you pay the same as the people we are buying from in the USA.

At the moment lots of prices are set differently in different countries due to the different economical circumstances in each country (this appies mainly to bigger ticket items like bikes). Again, only the suppliers can change this.

I feel extremely sorry for retailers in Australia at the moment because they cop it from both sides (the suppliers setting prices in a way that isn't working and the retailers reacting like humans always wil in buying from overseas).

Some suppliers may not care - if they get the sale through the USA anyhow and they pick up a few overpriced sales within Australia it all works for them I guess. But, no matter how you slice or dice it, Australian retailers (in lots of areas - not just bike and ATV stuff) need to try to work with suppliers so they can compete with the overseas sellers on the internet otherwise Australian retail will continue to decline.

Yes danger man and you are correct it's the usa manufacturers an suppiers that need to sort this all out.
I have tried countless time to talk to the usa suppliers about pricing and they never listen as we are just a bees you know what compared to the Usa market.

if australian retailers are going to charge more for a product than it can be bought for overseas (for whatever reason) they need to show the consumer why we should be paying more. if all it comes down to is price than 95% of people will go the cheaper option. unless you can show consumers why they should buy from you they will shop wherever its cheapest.

i buy my gear both locally and overseas and it usually comes down to the choice between price and convenience. for example, if i cant fit it myself it gets bought at a shop. if its a pair of pants i will buy overseas at half the price.

australian retailers need to prove why they should be supported not complain when they dont help their customers or themselves

How do you know that the gasket kit was not on special buy a seller that wanted it gone so sold it for below cost? People assume they are getting ripped off by aus suppliers but most of the time it's the Usa getting rid of somthing or selling for below retail. Then you think we have to improve the usa needs to improve what they are doing.

in response
there were about 10 different sellers under $65 delivered.
The 2 local shops didnt have the kit in stock, but was ex sydney.
2 day wait they quoted.

So can you please rejustify the above?

Your never going to change america so maybe you need too.

Andy relax.
Im not having a go at anyone other then the thieving
mungrels that supply australia with goods.
Be it white goods, cars or blow up sheep. wink wink feral lol..
Why is a top of the range v8 hilux in usa $35K
Yet we pay $70k for a pos 4 clyinder?
Jet ski $12 k us $23 k aus. seriously wtf.

The trouble with this thread is u dug a hole for youself
when u mentioned your not a charity,
and need to make money.
Well so are all your buyers mate, they dont just fork out there hard
earned cause there a nice bunch and think you should have a
fancy car and house.

Maybe look at getting a wholesale deal thru atv galaxy or similar.
They nock of 10% for u, you add on 10% and u start selling good
products at a reasonable price.
Theres no overheads attached and it takes 5 minutes per order.
$100 part $10 in your pocket. 5 minutes work.
$1000 part etc etc.
Simplistec streamling of your buisness is what u need. not bashing
your customers.

im not getting upset at all, might look like it but im not just interested to see what people really think.

i understand i could do deals like that, im a dealer for most of the on-line shops and i have access to the small discounts they offer, i just choose not to support them.
10% profit (as an example) is not much to be able to live on when the volume in Australia is so small for this industry that's why the internet sales hurt importers. if the market was as big as the usa it wouldn't matter.

even if do get a discount from the larger shops like rocky and ATV galaxy its still hard to offer the same prices as i have to charge GST so instantly my 10% margin is gone. i know it might only take 5 minuets to make a sale like that but in that 5 minuets i could have made a sale from stocked goods or signed up a new dealer that will buy stock. Im not running a home business i have rent and overheads to pay which comes to about 30% of my profit so making 10% on goods is going backwards in the overall picture. the other importers will be in the same boat.

the only way for us to make money that cover costs of running a business is to have distributorship's so we can buy and import them in bulk and and make a decent margin to cover costs and hopefully at the end of the year have some profit.

I will happilly buy locally, and am prepared to pay a price premium to do so (I understand about ongoing costs to run a business and economies of scale). BUT there is a point where it can feel like one is being raped, few people will knowingly stand for that.

As good as your prices may or may not get, on the larger items Aust Post and Couriers will always come along and rip more $$ to get the stuff shipped to you, so in effect it makes a good priced product too expensive.

That's my 2 cents worth

As long as us Australians keep paying stupid prices for things the USA will always be cheaper.
Our dollar is worth more then theirs and we still get screwed.

I understand that all businesses need to make money. I run a business myself and all my equipment was made in Australia buy an Australian company for a great price.
Now I was happy with that but I can get the replacement parts from the USA for less then half the price so I buy them from there.

It's all about the money if you can't be competitive on price you can't expect to run at your full potential.
No one is going to pay more of their hard earned cash just because your a nice guy.
