Fight For Sam. Campaigning For Quad Bike Safety is a facebook page set up by the parents of a kid who got killed on a farm holiday while riding a quad bike. The riding was done without the parents permision, and these guys are pretty upset.
They are pushing for a range of things now, and given their, to be very polite, "emotional status", the media is very interested.
The below facebook quotation is the first of , I suspect, a few TV interviews:

"Hello everyone, our interview with channel 10’s the project will be on Monday night the 6th of August."

Not that the media has ever gone soft on the issues of dying kids and quad bikes, but I reckon The Project will use their special loophole regarding the difference between "current affairs" and "entertainment" to stir things up if they've nothing better to do. I guess we'll see monday night.

Let's blame the quad not the person who left the keys in it with kids around

Look this up on facebook and have your say on how things really are, there is a bit of a "debate" on there at the minute.

Bingo!
Right up there with "that's the throttle, that's the brake and take it easy."
Works OK when the newbies do just that.........

Yet you still seem to manage ok hey Dino laughing

That quote is a pretty fair line, hey. It's nice to see the reality spread across all "motorcycling" where it fits equally to bikes and quads.

Sad for the family but Their just looking for someone to blame for their own irresponsibility
Frustrating reading all that crap that goes with it
Project will just turn it into a big sob story .. Hopefully they have all the facts before they made the story

I agree that the family is looking for someone to blame!! I was about to post on the thread, but decided against it as people who have posts on facebook about children who are killed have tunnel vision. Unfortunatly I dont get channel 10 so I will have to wait till tomorrow to see it its on the net. There was an article in the Bairnsdale Advertiser (our local paper) about a month ago titled "4 Wheeled Killers". It went on to state that quad bikes were the no. 1 killer on farms. I didnt argue with there statistics, it was the title taht pissed me off!! Its not the quad that kills, its the uneducated, unsupervised or inexperianced rider. I called them, gave them an ear full, and got a retraction.

Thats my 2 cents any way. (please xcuse and spelling errors, on panadine forte from knee surgery)

4 & 1/2 minutes of infamy.
+160 deaths since 2001 vs +165 000 quads sold since 2003.
less than point 1 percent.
A Federal MP leaving a lot of wriggle room in his brief statement.
Two experts, in their own minds, chasing ambulances
And despite the lack of compulsory training, and despite many of those fatalities a result of being not used as designed or PPE, by my reckoning that's over 164, 840 users that got by without intervention.

Someone said to me today that our govts. get by just fine creating fear in peoples minds so they can look good allaying those fears.

As a parent, that couple have my sympathy, but not my support in their blame period of greiving.

My comment left to the project on FB:
"Re the Quad Safety story. That would have been tough for the parents doing that interview. They have my deepest sypathy. But quad training? It's optional, and only based on a ride on mower course. What is needed is the same as what recreational boaties get. A course in competance and responsibilities, nation wide. And quads are like bobcats. They may all look the same, but their are models for specific usage and age groups. The ROPS, or to term it correctly, ACD as in anti crush device, will succeed in making a certain wealthy man much wealthier, and will be misused, and certainly mislead users on their perceived safety. And despite the emotional targeting by certain groups, over 165 thousand quads sold since records began in 2003 will ensure there is no quick fix. One thing the story got right, was that quads are fun and easy to use. Perhaps the Project could look at an owners manual and see the emphasis on safe and correct use? It is optional, but that might be the real problem."

Interesting how it didnt talk much about riders wearing PPE, and showed filming of a quad rider wearing a helmet, while the driver of the quad in front did not have a helmet on. I agree Deano, 7pm project should do a story on how exciting quad are to use in the right hands!!

I thought it was a better balance than I expected from the Media.
I can not believe they never said if he was wearing a helmet or not.
They said he hit his head and died instantly, so I assume he wasn't.

A tragedy for the family Sad
