Hot on the heels of the ambulance, Proffesor Tony Lower is spouting his agenda again. ( Dunno if I spelled his name right. I'll bother when he starts checking his facts. )

http://www.abc.net.au/rural/news/content/201207/s3544343.htm

My email to the ABC:
"Firstly I must bring to light the facts surrounding this latest incident.
The girl killed was one of four riding this machine unsupervised and without the required PPE. Not taking turns, all at once.
Secondly, Tony Lower will never let any opportunity go by to push his barrow, the tyres of which appear to be paid for by the Quad Bike "Rops" importers. Regardless of how tragic the circumstances, he is getting a reputation as a ambulance chaser.
Thirdly, an analysis of actual events will prove that operator error is the prime cause of incidents, which is somewhat contrary to Mr Lowers' beliefs.
Fourthly, the use of a anti crush device ( to use it's correct term) on a quad bike is substantially different to either a FOPS or ROPS on a tractor.
I provide the above information in the interests of more balanced reporting in future.

What a silly thing IMO to say. Rolls eyes

This reminds me of when a young girl was tragically run over after being dropped off at school. The vehicle in question was a standard run of the mill 4WD and there was a big backlash against 4WD's in schools and suburban shopping centres. Lack of rear view, or some crap.

Well bugger me if there wasn't a huge scare campaign against four wheel drives and everyone who has ever driven one!

Then the RACQ does some un-biased testing and guess what? The worst vehicle in the test is the Toyota Tarago, second worst is chrysler voyager.

Guess what all the mums take the kids to school in?

Some people live by "never let the truth get in the way of a good story"

Isn't it funny how having all the facts seems to shut a lot of people up?

Get into them Dino.

here's my email and reply...

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your email.

Firstly the interview cut out the fact that what I was talking about was not specific to the case last week – we were talking about the patterns of fatalities overall and the information we have from the coroners on those cases covering 2001- 2010.

However, in relation to the case last week – your observations may well be valid (but we will await the coroners findings before making any assumptions).

Notwithstanding that, there is a fundamental design problem with quads in relation to both stability and rollovers.

Regards

Tony

Attn: tony lower

dear tony your quotes in the abc http://www.abc.net.au/rural/news/content/201207/s3544343.htm
while helpful and insightful, but you left out a few details regarding this terrible tragety
1-there were four children on the atv
2- they were all unsupervised
3- even if they were supervised what moron would let 4 children all under the age of 15 ride a 700cc atv all at the same time? i ask you ?
but regardless they WERE UNSUPERVISED.

and while this will always haunt the parents, when are they going relise that atvs are dangerous but you know what I have had over 450 hours on atvs, only once did I come off bu you know what atv, cars, tractors are dangerous, but why dont kids hop in mum or dads car and do some driving on the farm ? because these are rego'd and yes it might sound simplistic but if all ATV had to rego'd then your legal age to ride on is 18 and because you have a licence, and have been trained ??

feed back would be apreciated.

kindest regards
mark johnstone

I have a fundamental problem with academics who don't answer questions which may cast doubt upon their thesis.

I'm pretty certain he sees LOTS of patterns..............

Geez a one sided news story, what a suprise, isn't journalism suppose to be about reporting the facts?
I grew up on the land and was riding dads quad around by time I was 5, he always made me wear a helmet. Quads have come a long way in the past 15 years. I remember when Polaris first came to Aus and dad bought one and I couldn't believe how fast this thing was and it was a farm quad! I had a quadracer 250 at the time and this farm quad was just as fast. Up till that point the run of the mill farm quad was a maximum 400cc with a top speed of around 50km/h.
I spose my point is that todays farm quads are just as sport orientated as they are work and a greater understanding of how to control these machines is needed through education.

Imagine what I could do if I had a ROPS fitted to my quad. I'd be indestructible. sxs is a bit outside the budget at the moment
