G'day folks,

I have just received an email from Mick Murphy from NPWS stating the closure of Stockton Beach this weekend due to the result of bad weather conditions causing damage to the beach.

I thought I'd let you guys know ASAP rather than getting there and being turned away.

Sorry about the bad news

Brad.

This is what I received from Mick.
Brad,
As discussed beach will be closed to all non commercial vehicles over the weekend.
Could you please post this link to our website on the OZATV and email to your contacts.

Also attached is the press release
Any issues please give me a call.
Regards

‘Wild weather causes temporary closure of Worimi Conservation Lands (Stockton Beach)’
The Worimi Conservation Lands including Stockton Beach north of Newcastle have been temporarily closed for all public access, due the recent extreme weather creating a public safety risk.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Hunter Region Manager Robert Quirk said that exceptionally high tides and large waves have caused severe erosion to Stockton Beach including deep flooding behind the fore dune.

“Wave action has eroded away the beach and fore dunes leaving steep ledges and large areas of very soft sand,” Mr Quirk said.

“There is insufficient beach remaining to allow for the safe traverse by 4WD vehicles, forcing the closure of the entire 32km long Stockton Beach.

“In addition, deep pools of water have accumulated behind the fore dune causing large areas of quick sand, making access to the area extremely dangerous.

“Park closure signs have been installed at all entrances, and NPWS staff will be based at the entrances over the weekend to advise visitors about the closure.

“NPWS will continue to monitor the conditions daily, and will re-open the park as soon as conditions improve. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the beach will be safe enough to reopen before the end of the long weekend,” she said.

For further information visit www.nationalpark.nsw.gov.au or call NPWS Hunter Region on 02 4984 8200.

Sounds like a plan mate.

If I hear anything more I'll let you all know ASAP.

I'll contact NPWS over the weekend to try to get an update on the situation.

Gday Fellas,

was just chatting to one of the blokes at work and was told it is unlikely to be re-opened for this weekend. It was inspected yesterday and will be again today, I will let you know if I hear anything further

I don't like to be negative but if the dunes were open like they were before certain parties became capitalists this would not be a problem.
With everyone being crammed on the beachfront of course its dangerous.
I wonder if the quarries are closed.

G'day Folks,

Sorry still bad news!!!!!!!!

This is the email from Mick today.

Brad, no good news sorry. Beach remains closed to public vehicles due to continuing safety issues.
Please find attached press release for distribution.
Thanks very much
Regards
Mick murphy

‘Stockton Beach remains temporarily closed for over the weekend (16-17 June) due to safety risk’
The Worimi Conservation Lands including Stockton Beach remains closed for all public access, due the recent extreme weather creating a public safety risk.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Hunter Region Manager Robert Quirk said that the exceptionally high tides and large waves which lashed the coast last week, have caused severe erosion to Stockton Beach including deep flooding behind the fore dune.

Mr. Quirk said “Despite the calmer weather experienced this week, the beach and dunes have not yet recovered, and there are still large areas where wave action has eroded away the beach and fore dunes leaving steep ledges and expanding areas of very soft sand.

“There is still insufficient beach remaining to allow for the safe traverse by 4WD vehicles, forcing the closure of the entire 32km long Stockton Beach.

“In addition, deep pools of water behind the fore dune remain a concern, causing large areas of quick sand, making access to the area extremely dangerous.

“Licenced four-wheel drive, sand boarding, horse riding and quad bike riding tour companies have been permitted restricted access to the park, allowing them to continue limited operations.

“Unfortunately, due to safety concerns the park remains closed over the weekend (16/17 June 2012) for all public access, however NPWS will continue to closely monitor conditions daily, and will re-open the park as soon as conditions improve”, Mr. Quirk said.

For further information visit www.nationalpark.nsw.gov.au or call NPWS Hunter Region on 02 4984 8200.

ENDS

Sorry no Cheers again

Brad

I did see the quad tour guy coming back from the beach last Sunday, and wondered if commercial operators had some kind of exemption....

Not as yet unfortunately, the parks boys have been checking it daily on both quads and 4wd's to review the damage and to see if its safe enough to re-open but at this stage it remains shut.

Ive got a new toy so ive been hassling them daily :p

G'day Folks,

I understand it's frustrating as anyone who has used the area for a long time will realise that this is not the first time mother nature has created havoc in the area, HOWEVER, it is the first time NPWS has been in control and therefore playing the safety card which all who use the area see that it may take months or even years to have the water reside dependent on how much it rains into the future.

I find it interesting and wonder if there could be any other motives in them exercising there authority re: a safety risk.

One thing is for sure, I'm certain this won't be either the first or last we hear of them closing the area due to safety concerns or the fact they can not control mother nature.

I do find it interesting how the beach front in which we are not permitted to ride on, that the water that we do not ride in, and the main access zones which we avoid due to ruts still sees us locked out. But I suppose that would be seen as a conflict of interest if the RVA was still open to the public as well as commercial operators who could threaten them with restraint of trade. I'm wondering should we apply to run tours?

Cheers Brad.

No good news today, apparently the water out the back has reduced somewhat but is still present, There is still very little beachfront to drive on and therefore a higher risk to people travelling down the beach.

I will be checking in with the boys again tomorrow to see what its looking like and will touch base back here
